PBB Question

After getting the update to 4.3 B6 I quickly went to the new PBB tool and found this screen...

Having clicked on the link I was then taken to the following web page.....

Does this mean that those like myself who haven't used the PBB before will now require a license to use the PBB tool or should this be ignored??

I have managed to compile a 'book' from an essay, have to say..... very cool! liking this a lot.

I do have a question regarding formatting in terms of page numbers and footnotes etc, is there any tutorials or documentation that explains how to add links both within a document and to other logos documents?

I know that bible references are done automatically but others aren't.

How did you manage that? Did you purchase a license? For me, the Personal Book feature will not recognize any document.

I will not purchase a license until I see that Logos plans to address the deficiencies in MS Word for Mac.

What you mean Jack, your Personal Book will not recognize any document? Did you try to create one from the docx file? I think so far (in Beta) it will see only our own books.

EDIT: I created a book of 75 pages, it worked like a charm and all Bible references are active.

I suspect this just means that they haven't changed the Logos.com/pbb page as this all refers to LDLS 3 personal book builder. I don't have any answers regarding whether or not we'll have to purchase a license to create personal books. But I'm pretty sure that nothing on logos.com/pbb refers to what we are doing in 4.3 beta 6.

Every document was grayed out, and nothing could be selected.

Hi Jack,

All I did to test it out was to get an essay of mine and save it as a docx, I used TextEdit. and then click 'Add Book' filled in the required fields, added the file and compiled the book...

I was surprised how quick it was... If I only I knew how to format it, in terms of footnote links etc...

I tried with several MS Word 2008 documents created and saved in docx format. PBB would not recognize any of them.

I used TextEdit

I opened a 55 page Word document in Text Edit and saved it as a docx file. PBB then found it, imported it, and complied it. Very nice and easy. However, Text Edit had removed 95% of the formatting.

Logos, did you test this tool with any documents created and saved in MS Word 2008—or 2011 for that matter? MS Word was a poor choice for PBB from L4 Mac, but it does not appear to work from there.

TextEdit, removed the formatting of my short 11 page essay, in terms of line breaks and paragraphs etc, so I had to go through and redo those..

MS Word was a poor choice for PBB from L4 Mac, but it does not appear to work from there.

I was beginning to think that PBB was going to be a non usable aspect of Logos for me for some time until I found TextEdit, and whilst it's not perfect it does allow me to make use of PBB and for that I am thankful.

I do wish there was a better way of importing into PBB, or at least another way of doing not just through docx and MSWord.

As noted in the post Personal Book Builder: Initial Observations and Issues, I got this to work with no problems (and no previous license for PBB in L3). In my case I took a couple of documents created in Nisus Pro, exported them to Word (.DOC), opened them in Word 2011 and saved them as .DOCX, and PBB recognized them and opened them with no problems.

Here's a thought: I added the suffix .DOCX to the filename. Did the documents that you tried to open have that suffix? Maybe PBB won't recognize them without it???

I was just preparing to post that observation when I read your post. Even those documents created in saved as docx in MS Word 2008 will not be recognized by the PBB importer unless they have the .docx extension visible. I always leave the "Append File Extension" unchecked in Word. Guess this will need to change unless the PBB tool changes.

BTW: Copied MS Word docx documents to XP under Parallels and discovered I must add the docx extension for L4 Win to recognize them also.

Yes. I ran across that long ago when passing files to students. Windows is pretty dumb about recognizing file types. That is what made me think of suggesting that you had to explicitly add the extension to the filename for L4 to recognize it. I suppose that is an artifact of the Windows heritage (or the cross platform nature of things). In any case, a notice on the file import screen would be helpful to Mac folks (something like: "Imported files must be in .DOCX format and must have the extension '.docx' appended to the file name to be recognized"). Otherwise we will spend a lot of time in the forums answering this question.

I believe there are some unique features in the docx format that are needed in PBB. If any other format can be used, Logos has not mentioned it.

Pages documents can be exported in Word format. Then, you would just need to open in Word and save in docx format.

Free option: open in LibreOffice, then save as docx.

Like Windows, Mac OS X has option to display or hide file extensions.

Observation: older Mac OS had couple hidden fields to identify file creator and type (not need file extension).

Remember 8.3 filenames? We thought we could never accept long, meaningful filenames that had spaces in them. Eek!! Too Mac-like. But we've gotten used to them, and actually most of us would probably admit to liking them better than the old way.

Irony: Mac OS X (for past 10+ years) uses file extensions like Windows (bit different how to change extension association to open a file).

Amazingly, Apple has hidden complexities of unix behind an easy to use interface that maintained many heritage Mac OS conventions (especially considering quotes are needed in unix for filenames that have spaces in them).

Yes. File Type and Creator identification were stored in the resource fork of the file. This told the OS what icon to use and what program to open the file with. When Mac files get converted to Windows this information is lost, even if the 'file format' is the same. This often creates problems when Mac users share files with Windows users, in that the latter think that they cannot open the files from the former. The files can be opened and will work, but Windows apps may not recognize the what kind of file it is, and may not let you select it. Generally the easiest solution is to manually add the extension to the file name.

The point in this case is that Mac users are not accustomed to adding extensions to file names, and need to be explicitly told to do so if they want L4's PBB to recognize the files and let them open them.

Isn't it great the way that technology makes our lives so much easier?
