possible bug - letters missing from Webster 1828

I have an unusual problem with my "American Dictionary of the English Language," otherwise known as Webster's 1828 edition: it does NOT display C in most of the headwords.

At first I thought it was a trick to same space so C in the beginning of a headword was not displayed, but then I noticed that c are not displayed in words like attic, etc., but hen displayed in others! So there is no rhyme or reason to letter C missing. Unfortunately, if it is missing in the middle of a word, there is no way of knowing that.

Also, starting with Cy, C is displayed in the beginning of headwords!

Had it been working OK and now has this problem?

Try changing Default font to Default in Program Settings and changing font size in the tab (the a ..... A slide control).

I would also guess that your preferred resource font cannot display the Unicode character that's being used for this "C" (though I'm not sure why it's being completely omitted instead of replaced with a box).

As for why it's written this way: the pronunciation guide states, "VIII. C before a, o and u, and in some other situations, is a close articulation, like k, and in the vocabulary of this work, whenever it is equivalent to k, it is marked thus C̵." (logosres:amdictenlang;art=dir;off=2547)

However changing it to "Default" meaning Logos' default have solved the problem.

Would this dictionary work on Android when it comes out or is it web-disallowed?

Not sure what you mean. Logos isn't responsible when a user picks a font that doesn't have all the characters a resource requires. That's why Logos has licensed and distributes the "default" fonts as a part of the Logos installation. Unfortunately, most fonts only have a subset of the characters that the books available in Logos require. Perhaps Logos should make this clearer when a user selects a non-default font.

I'm not a programmer persay, but I do know, where there is a will there is a way (especially with computers). If Logos provides a product, there should be a way to make it where all fonts required in order to read it, could be made available. This might attract the tigers of this forum again, but I just have a hard time believing we have to stop at something so believable

There has to be a service somewhere in todays world that provides some kind of compatibility fix for these sort of problems....

Logos does provide all the fonts required.

The problem is when people choose to use different fonts.

There have been instances in the past when the supplied fonts were missing a character or two, and, in those cases, Logos works with the font designer to get the missing characters added in.

I in particular like the "Comic" font, b/c it looks like someone actually wrote what I'm reading, a little easier on the pyschy. Rather than a computer text (Times new roman). But this font doesn't seem to work very well with the Hebrew and Greek characters, as well as characters found in the Websters 1828 dictionary like our post starter. This makes me sad

Fonts have owners. If the font you choose to use doesn't have a particular character, and if the owner of that font doesn't want to add that character, there is nothing Logos can do about it, except recommend you to use another font. At least nothing legal -- and I'm presuming you're not suggesting they do something illegal?

I sympathize with you, Douglas. The differences between different fonts cause a lot of trouble for Logos users. Wish Logos had control over what's in the fonts created by other parties, but they're in a position of dependence. They can sometimes (as mentioned above) negotiate with the font creators to get them to add new characters and release a new version of the font, but this is rare. Perhaps we could request that Logos ship a few more of its own fonts for us to select from besides just their "Default" (aka Athelas), which would contain all the characters needed by all the resources they produce, including that obscure C with a funky thing sticking off it pictured above which is not likely to be in most commercially available fonts.

I think I remember reading that they commissioned the Default font and licensed it from the font creator specifically for use in Logos. Much work was done to make sure it would work on all platforms and look nice with Logos's pastel-like user interface, and they had to do Greek and Hebrew characters for it and various other special characters. It would be a lot of work for them to do some other fonts with different characteristics. But I suppose it isn't beyond the realm of possibility that they'd be open to trying, if enough people requested it. There are literally thousands and thousands of fonts out there, and many different variables that go into making a font. And no collection of fonts they could ship is going to please everyone, alas. (Font preferences arouse some of the most passionate feelings among graphic designers. [:)] You'd be amazed. Some people absolutely hate and ridicule fonts that are favorites of others.) But maybe Logos could be persuaded to provide some classic favorites, say a more Old English-y looking one, and a more informal one like Comic, and one or two others. Due to the fact that almost every existing font is copyrighted, they'd have to create their own new ones that were subtly different in some way from existing commercially available fonts, or else license those fonts from the owners and get the owners to add needed characters to them.

I fully agree with you - therefore I don't think it would be wise in terms of developer's time etc. for Logos to spend time and effort on creating fonts. Everyone who doesn't like the fonts available is free to choose his/her own. In case this font doesn't support some more or less exotic features (like the strange C here), they have the possibility to choose another font.

AFAIK there are public domain versions of fonts, where people may create their own characters or ask font designers that work with open licences to complete the fonts in case of missing characters.

My 0.014 EUR (don't want to pretend more woth than 0.02 USD)

This could be a possible area for people in the Logos user community to contribute then. If anyone out there has graphic design or calligraphy skills and is willing to spend a bit of time learning font editing software, then perhaps taking an existing public domain font and adding characters as needed to support all the weird jots and tittles and squiggles and strange C's that Logos needs could be a good project to work on in your spare time. I've always wanted to learn how to create or edit a font but I don't have the time nor the graphic design skills to make it look very nice.
