2 PBB Surprises

I've often wanted access to the Revised Common Daily Lectionary through Logos. (It would help with my personal devotions greatly.) So this morning, I took an RTF file from a website that I subscribe to (which give me a license for one year to reproduce the content of the site--so I don't think I'm breaking copyright laws) which contains the Revised Common Daily Lectionary and converted it to a docx and added it into a personal book.

Here's what I noticed.

1. The readings that come after the day of the week notation are not resolved automatically.

In the file I used the layout is:

Advent 1

Th Psalm 122

Daniel 9:15-19

James 4:1-10

I'm wondering if it has to do with the tabs between the day of the week abreviation and the reference.

2. It didn't know resolve the "optional" references in the file.

I was surprised by both situations. I wouldn't necessarily call them bugs--because maybe these are things that people like me would need to build in manually to get to work. I was just surprised that those references wouldn't be resolved automatically.

These needs to be a space between the date and the first reading in order for the PBB to tag it. If I recall correctly, the optional notation doesn't automatically tag in notes either.

I'm not sure what you mean by "resolved". The lectionary has three readings per weekday and four for Sundays. Resolving choices for a given day i.e. a fixed date service and and regular church calendar day such as All Soul's Day and the day in Ordinary Time - depends upon:

denomination
county
diocese
order
parish name
pastor's option

The site I know that tried to follow just the regional variations had to admit defeat.

The Christmas readings are for 3 separate services - vigil, dawn and day. Again, there are a number of considerations that determine which service(s) a particular parish will use.

The scriptural citations that are shown in brackets are optional i.e. the reading has both a long and a short form. Which is read depends upon a liturgical committee, pastor or preacher depending upon the parish.

Another reason for a choice of readings in the Daily RCL is that between Pentecost and Advent there are parallel paths - a path that emphasizes OT narratives and a path that emphasizes wisdom literature and prophets. Because the daily readings of the RCL related directly to the Sunday readings, this means that there are two paths of daily readings.Which is used depends upon the denomination and the pastor.

Hi MJ ... I'm glad you managed to get your coffee. [:)]

I wish the "optional notation" would tag automatically--but I can see how that could be a lengthy process to implement. I'm still surprised that a [Tab] prior to a reference would result in a different behaviour than a [Space]--I guess it all depends on the rules that are being used to parse the text.

As I looked further into the file, I noticed that when the RTF file that I used had tabs to set up the two columns (for the semi-continuous or thematic options through the Season after Pentectost) the PBB did not pick up the scriptural references in the second column either.

So, I'll have some manual coding ahead of me then I think. Fortunately I'll have time over the summer to get Year B's readings ready.
