Should I purchase Logos for my iPod Touc and iPad 1?
I have been using OliveTree and Laridian's Bible readers for several years on Palms, Windows and the iPhone. They are great resources. However, I was greatly impressed by the Logos free app for iPhone and Ipad. But it is a lot of money. I am not saying that it is overpriced, but do I need the power? Here's a few questions thatmay be able to help me decide - can you help?
- If I buy the Scholars bundle, will everything there be available on both my PC and my iPad and iTouch?
- Does Logos have plans for the NABRE bible?
- I could not see any Notes function on my iTouc. Any news when this is coming?
- What's "community pricing"? There is one title that is community pricing. What pricing and when can it be purchased (it's the Catholic Encyclopedia).
- Does Logos have plans for the Ignatius Catholic Study Bible NT?
- Are there any demos or screen shots of Kittel on the iPad / iTouch. I would love to see what it gives you.
- How do foot notes show up. For example the NAB has commentary notes in it. In Laridian they are in-line. In Olivetree they have a footnote number, hit it and a pop-up box comes up, or it opens in the main window or split window (user definable). How does Logos handle such things? I cannot tell with the free version.
Thanks for any help that you can give.
Richard.

I was typing out a long reply to all your questions and accidently moved away from the page. so I'm gonna have to do the quick and dirty. all will show up on PC, most (70-80ish percent) on the mobile apps. Notes function coming, don't know how long, as well as advanced highlighting. Community pricing is a cheap way to get books (i really lament the deletion of my long explanation of this :-( ), below is a screen shots of Kittel on the Touch. footnotes are "tab the footnote number, pop-up appears. screen shot below.

One of the biggest advantage of Logos Mobile App over others are the Bible Word Studies and Passage Guides. Check out the screen shots....

And of course, the desktop software is just awesome.

One remark regarding this thread before addressing your concern. Philip noted that he had lost a longer attempt at previously posting a reply, and I note that with the original post and Philip's sole reply 3 posts are shown. I'm wondering whether that previous attempt is out there floating around in the cyber world.
I don't use mobile devices for any purpose other than making and receiving calls -- I don't even text unless almost forced into it so I'm speaking from presumption. Generally the Logos engine has been free. One only pays to purchase the resources. If I purchase some resources for my desktop and then retrieve my (ex-) laptop from my daughter, the same resources will appear there. I would therefore presume that any resources you may get for the PC will likewise be available on your other forms (unless there is a problem adapting them to the format or if time itself has prevented their adaptation thus far). There are some resources I have in L4 (current Logos engine) which I don't have in L3 (previous Logos engine) simply because they either can't be or haven't been adapted for it.

And one thing that nobody has mentioned that's worth mentioning...if you decide you'd like to give Logos a try, they have a generous 30 no questions asked return policy...couple that with the "only pay the first payment now" payment plan and the fact that it's a download NOW sort of situation....and you can try it for very little cash....decide if it fits your needs...or not.
You could be up and running tomorrow, and have a whole month to return (which only amounts to calling them and having them reverse the charge on your card....you don't have to physically mail anything back to them at all...it's very convenient.

Richard, It is a lot of money and that's not the end of the story - it's addictive! I've got scholars, and feel it was money well invested! Should you decide to return it, I've sometimes returned a resource and they've never complained. Unfortunately for your budget, if you get it, you are not likely to return it..... Go for it!
Not everything is available on iPad, at least not offline. I use iPad for Bible study as I have downloaded most of the commentaries I use. Sitting in the sun or by the stove with iPad I find more conducive to Bible Study than sitting at the computer.I consult the computer if necessary for resources not on the iPad.

If I buy the Scholars bundle, will everything there be available on both my PC and my iPad and iTouch?
Around 80% of PC resources are available on iOS devices. The number is creeping up, and I'm pretty sure that all new resources will be available on iOS.
Does Logos have plans for the NABRE bible?
No that I've heard.
I could not see any Notes function on my iTouc. Any news when this is coming?
No news yet, but it is planned, and I think being actively worked on. The intention is to have notes sync between PC and iOS.
What's "community pricing"? There is one title that is community pricing. What pricing and when can it be purchased (it's the Catholic Encyclopedia).
There's long explanation here: http://www.logos.com/communitypricing/about
The short version is that Logos work out how much it costs them to build a resource. Let's say $10,000 to make the math easy. Then they let users decide how much they're willing to pay. If 10 users offer to pay $1,000 they'll build the resource, or 100 offer $100, or 1,000 offer $10 and so on. If 700 people offer $10 and 300 offer $20 and 250 offer $40, then everyone would pay $8, because that's the cheapest it could be made for. CP resources can take a long time to reach the threshold, and some never do. They often take another 6 months or so to be produced.
Does Logos have plans for the Ignatius Catholic Study Bible NT?
Again, not to my knowledge, although they've released announced some other Ignatius Press offerings.
Are there any demos or screen shots of Kittel on the iPad / iTouch. I would love to see what it gives you.
See above.

Notes are always pop-up in Logos.
Personally, I use both Olivetree and Logos. Overall, my advice would be that Olivetree is a better app unless:
- You want desktop access to your resources without paying again.
- You need resources that only Logos offer.
- You have frequent online access and plan to use the Passage Guide, etc.
I'm really not sure I'd pay the price of scholars just for the functionality I get with the mobile app. But if I had a laptop/desktop too…

Richard, first off notes are not available today, but they will be here soon is what Bob has said... and based on what I have seen in the betas and by his word Soon, I suspect that it will be virtually any day. I personally would be very surprised if it were more than a few weeks.
I have some 1790 books in my logos 4 library, and 1685 are currently available on my ipad. I have downloaded about 30 books, enough that I can easily write a sermon or make a bible study while I am at the hospital, or away from the office and need to do some work.
Your other questions, I can not answer, but there is little doubt in my mind that you would like logos 4. the app is some 18 months old, but it has come a LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOONG way since it was introduced. and as has already been stated, if you don't like what you see, simply call logos up and tell them. they will take care of it.
I hope that this helps,

Thank you everyone for taking the time to answer some of my questions. That has been a great help. I think most of my questions have been answered. Here's my thoughts:
- Cannot go wrong with a 30 day trial.
- $260-ish for the Bible Study package is a lot in one go, but there is so much in there. I was thinking of adding Kittel to my OliveTree software. That would cost about $170, but it is included as part of the Scholars package. So, the extra $90 gives me (just lisitng what is useful to me) a Desktop package, loads of maps and timelines, Edersheim and the possibility of adding later the NJB, Cantena Aurea, Vatican II docs, and a few others.
- So the only downside is that I would have to buy the NAB, and Logos does not do the NABRE as yet.
- So price is not the issue.
- Another downside is no notes.... as yet... but it looks from the comments that it is almost here.
- Also, perhaps some books cannot be downloaded to the ipad... but minimal and certainly not the ones that I am interested in.
Looks like a "no brainer" as they say. Thanks everyone for your help.
I will let you know how I get on with the purchase. I might just wait until the notes ability comes out...
God Bless,
Richard.

Firstly, I don't want you to be disappointed so, if my suspicion that the NJB you reference is the New Jerusalem Bible, you won't find it in Logos. Secondly, why wait for the notes functionality? If (I assume when) they add it, you will get it even though you got in before its release.

Obviously I wasn't aware of this. I had a print edition many years ago which had many notes. Judging from the preview pages of the standard edition this no longer has those notes which makes it just another translation thereby meaning that I don't need it.

Thanks George for your comments and help.
Ah, I am an auditor and risk manager by profession. I wanted to wait for the notes functionality to be available, so that I could test it out within the 30 day trial period. Ageed, my risk is very low. Notes and highlighting are coming, and if it is not perfect first time, I am sure that it will be. I suppose I am just "procrastinating the day of my purchasing."
Actually the NJB is for sale already at $39.95. It's a "nice to have" rather than a deal breaker.
Thanks again.
Richard.

Just found that Logos has an extensive Jewish collection also. This is something that my current iOS Bible Readers do not have. Another reason to jump. I do not see Rashi in the listing however. He is probably the greatest of the OT commentators from the Jewish perspective.

Philip,
How do you select a Kittel entry? If I am reading the Bible, say the KJV, can I tap on a word and pull up Kittel? Or would I need to know the Greek and then look it up separately (i.e. go into kittel and then pull up the definition).
Grateful for everyone's help.
Richard.

If you are online, you can do this (it's a two step operation, you run a Bible Word Study from the KJV, then access the lexicon from the BWS).
Or would I need to know the Greek and then look it up separately (i.e. go into kittel and then pull up the definition).
That's what you need to do if you're offline. You currently don't get access to reverse interlinear data whilst offline (we're hoping that will change, but there's no official word yet).

From what I can tell, the Bible Word Study option (hold down on a word in a bible and select Bible Word Study while online) only displays BDAG and DBL Greek. That would be where Kittel shows up. I even tried prioritizing Kittel in the PC software and it didn't change the options so I think you have to go into the Kittel TOC and navigate to the word.
Anyone else with better wisdom?

Bible Word Study will use your top prioritized resources from Logos 4. It can sometimes take about an hour for priority changes made in Logos 4 to sync to the servers that run the Bible Word Study.

Well again thank you everyone for your help and the answers to my questions. The forum has really made me feel at home. Sometimes forums can becomes simply places to vent on the software publisher for inadequacies or perceived errors. I did not get the feeling from this one. It's more of a "we are all in this together, and our goal is Christ."
I have also through you all now dispelled a myth: "Logos is expensive and overpriced." Not in the slightest. On the iOS platform you get the reader and good amount of resources free. Agreed you need to be connected to the internet for the majority of them. The package approach e.g. Home Study, Scholars, etc is such good value. I counted up the cost of taking just the items that I wanted from the Home Study volume and it would have cost me as much elsewhere and most likely more when I add in the "maybe perhaps" items.
The available library for purchase is second to none. And it includes Catholic and Jewish resources that again are only found in small numbers elsewhere.
Also, do any of you feel that Logos will go out of business or stop developing and leave you in the lurch with hundreds of dollars of resources that cannot sync or are not updated? Nope, not me.
However...... I have made a preliminary decision to go with a different provider for these reasons:
- cross referencing other resources, e.g. JFB, Eastons, Naves, are so much better in this other program. From my trialling out Logos on my iTouch and iPad, it was not a easy to see the relevant hits amongst so many unless specifically selecting one resource, then selecting another. I have no doubt that Logos will work on this.
- I would love the resource hits to come up in pop-ups.
- Reversing backwards was not as easy.
- The desktop (what a great tool from watching the videos) is not what I need.
So it is a compromise. The other vendor that I am almost certain that I will go with:
- does not give me as much confidence that it will always be there.
- does not provide a back up of my notes on my desktop (I like to be in control of my notes), Logos does (well once notes are up and running in iOS)
- does not provide the breadth of Catholic and Jewish materials. But I can always use the Kindle app or Doc's to Go or simply the internet. Not as convenient I agree.
- The forum is not a "family" like Logos
But in the end it is the presentation on the iTouch / iPad, the pop ups, the Resource Guide, that makes it for the "other"
I will give myself a "cooling off" period just to make sure. Once committed to a few hundred dollars of resources, then it is not easy to go back.
But thank you all for your help.
God bless,
Richard.

Really ! I wasn't aware of that and hadn't noticed since it seemed that when I prioritized a resource it went into effect immediately.

So, you set the priority on the desktop Logos? It then sync to the iOS version. So when performing a "SEarch" with theb "Basic" and "Entire Library" selected, it will be prioritized as per your priority listing initially set on the desktop version?
If true, that addresses one of my concerns.
Can you confirm?

it seemed that when I prioritized a resource it went into effect immediately.
It all depends on the volume of data that users are syncing at a given time.

Resource priority doesn't affect search result ranking. It is used when linking between resources.

Could you be clearer what you're trying to achieve here? I can't quite visualise what you're attempting.
I would love the resource hits to come up in pop-ups.
From the search results? If so, then you're right, this isn't possible in Logos.
Reversing backwards was not as easy.
If you swipe down in reading view, then tap and hold the left arrow in the top left corner, you'll get your history. It's also available on the 'More' tab, in a slightly different format.
The desktop (what a great tool from watching the videos) is not what I need.
Is is a great tool! It's worth remembering that if you will have need in the future, it's there for you. With Logos you can also access all your iPhone resources at www.biblia.com from any computer.
other vendor
Don't feel you're not allowed to mention the other vendor. Logos are quite happy with other discussion the relative merits and demerits of competitors so long as it is done in a good spirit and not in the spirit of 'Don't use Logos! XXXReader is much better - and now 50% off with this coupon'!!!
For what it's worth, I use both OliveTree's BibleReader and Logos, and find myself using both for different things, because like you say, it's a compromise. (Though if Logos iPhone app had been around when I bought OliveTree, I probably would have just stuck with Logos.)

I actually like the way Logos handles pop-up footnotes, one thing they might improve is have the "jump to reference option" to open in second panel.
My recommendation to Richard would be to go with Logos, and then use the other application as a supplement for resources. Maybe get a good package with Logos, and then basic resources you wanted on the other. I even use Laridian sometimes because I have resources I purchased backs when I used a PocketPC (those were the days, I wouldn't want to go back). I use the Bible app by LifeChurch.tv also, they now have audio Bibles and I like the way they post Scpripture to Twitter and Facebook. The point is, you might want to use more than one Bible app on your iOS devices, I have yet to find One App that does everything on the iPad (on the Mac, its Logos for sure). Logos is a good investment, especially with addition now of Vyrso which will add some really good resources (I'm hoping for C.S. Lewis works in Logos).
Blessings,

TDNT has been prioritized over BDAG since last night in my library and I'm still getting only BDAG and DBL Greek on my Ipod Touch's Bible Word Study. using Right click>Lookup on the PC for the same word brings up TDNT. I'm using the current PC Beta.

You limit the resources that show up in a search using collections which are set up on your desktop software. Once you tell Logos, through the desktop software, to make a collection of all your, say, Catholic resources, you will search (from the iOS App) only your catholic resource. However, you still will not be able to prioritize the resources in that catholic resources search.
