Where's NIV?

I have the Logos app on my new iPad 2 and I understood that it gave me access to all the Logos books that I own. However, the NIV didn't show up so I thought I didn't own it.Went and purchased it again but I'm still not seeing it on the iPad. I can see the other Bible versions but not the NIV. Any help here?

Sadly, not all books can be used on the IPad due to copyright issues. This inludes the NIV.

You will not have access to all your library should have access to 85% of it. Logos needs to work out contracts with all the publishers on the the availability of their items to the mobile environment (Logos accomplishes it's mobile via a a cloud based model, requiring different permissions from publishers), when it was first out i believe MOST of Thomas Nelson products were unavailable now i think all of them are. NIV has been an impossible one for Logos to get so far. I really wish like some other Bible APPs we could sync from our computers to put on whatever we wanted that we own. I know that getting the NIV is almost likely the top priority of rights for Logos mobile and expect it will be available eventually, but until then you will have to look elseswhere for the NIV.

Charles, welcome to the forums.

Unfortunately, as Dan and Garett already explained, not all publishers allow Logos to give access to the resources on all platforms (this may or may not be due to contracts of the publishers with their authors or others from whom the publishers secured their copyrights). Thus, as far as Logos is concerned, and Bob has stated this clearly in this forums somewhere, they would like to follow the "buy once use everywhere" approach, but are not allowed to for some resources. This is the smallest part of all those available, but it is the case for the NIV.

There are are some small icons beneath the resource pictures that show, which platform the resource will run on. I've always seen the Windows logo and this Mac face, but not always there is the iPhone/iPad symbol - compare the catalogue entries for NIV and for example ESV:

I have no experience with refunds, but as you said you were mislead to buy NIV for the second time, I think you have a good chance to get your dollars refunded if you call Customer Service. For reading NIV on the iPad - try whether it is accessible through http://biblia.com (and maybe it's a good idea to inform Zondervan that their competitors are taking away market share in the mobile world and they should re-think their licence with Logos... )

The "impossible" part seems to be Logos' fault. BTW, I would gladly pay $15 extra to have the NIV on the iPad version of Logos. One reason I bought my iPad was because I could use Logos on it (OK, that was one of the reasons I gave my wife ;-)) but I really can't use it since (for good or bad) the NIV is my preferred version. Disappointing. Fortunately, Glo Bible and Olive Tree are more than serviceable.

First thing to be aware of is the NIV is licensed for sale in North America. The license does not allow for sales in Australia, Europe or possibly even Asia. The copyright holder has separate product and licenses for those geographical areas. This makes it difficult to include it in a software program. I know of no Bible software that did not have to pay a fee to include the NIV.

Second thing is the copyright holder requires a separate licensing fee for each device the version is installed on (unlike Logos.) So I doubt we will ever get the NIV on iPad, Android, or anything else without paying another $10 fee. Most of us would be happy to pay for a second copy but until the copyright holder figures a way to prevent that second copy from being viewed on multiple devices I don't believe we will get it. I hope I am wrong.

Question for Logos users in Australia, New Zealand, and the U.K.: Do you have the NIV available in your Logos? Or is it blocked?

Read this thread from last January. I agree an additional fee for having the NIV available on iPad would not be all that objectionable. But as Michael Childs says in the other thread, it would be like opening Pandora's box. I will be patient. I can not afford to re-purchase my library to use on a mobile device.

Ok, I just found out from a friend that there is another mobile app that is offered completely free of charge that allows you to read the NIV: youversion.com. So they can let me view the NIV for free, but Logos can't?
