Logos not responding

Here's something kind of weird - when I type in a passage in Logos, and hit the Go - I get a "not responding" on the top of Logos. Then that passage will eventually come up. When I close it down, I get the same "not responding" --- and have been getting this for a bit.

Also, I just clicked on a layout and it is not coming up - just the little circle thing continually turning but nothing is happening. The same "not responding" message is there. When I look in the Taskmanager, I see something about 32 bit - (I think) - I'm using a 64 bit machine.

I am using Windows Home Premium - 8Gigs of RAM with a Toshiba L675 (shared graphics - no dedicated video card). Any suggestions as to why I'm getting this snag?

What version of L4 are you running?

Reboot the computer then start L4 with logging. If the problem persists upload the logos4.log.

When I look in the Taskmanager, I see something about 32 bit - (I think) - I'm using a 64 bit machine.

It informs you that L4 is 32-bit software on a 64-bit machine.

My body has just informed me that I need to hurl myself under the covers - 6AM comes quickly. I'll look forward to your furthered help(s).

The log reveals nothing. Repeat the action that causes the problem then wait until L4 starts responding before uploading the logs. If you have a lot of snapshots in your Layouts menu then try deleting them.

I have 4 layouts. When this problem arises, it is when I type in a verse in the "Go" box and of course much loads up. I notice when I do a simple search and add a commentary or two, the problem does not show (the "no responding") --- any further suggestions?

There were a lot of things happening in this log but I need a description to understand where you perceived a "hang". But it would be better to perform the one action from Home Page "Go" that causes the hang, close L4 and submit the log.

I shut down Logos and tried several times again and the "not responding" did not show on either bringing up the passage etc nor on closing it down.

I didn't look at your log, but from experience I know that the "not responding" message usually has something to do with other stuff running in the Windows background. Looking at task manager probably won't help, since the bottleneck is not at the place that task manager looks.

You may want to try one or more of the techniques here: http://wiki.logos.com/Logos_Running_Slowly , including the suggestion to turn off Tablet PC Input Services (look under "Some Tweaks for Windows"), and the suggestions for compatibility settings, as Logos4 is very graphics intensive (all the text is rendered graphically, e.g.).

If there are some system tweaks available to you (usually through the power settings and/or as part of the sleep/hibernate settings panel) to allow your machine to run faster, you may want to enable those. Often laptop manufacturers set the system defaults for something 'average' (in Win7 OS it's called "Balanced") to extend battery life, you may want to choose "High performance." I'm not sure what Toshiba does with that.

Richard, thanks for the reply. It scares me a bit when you say this program (and I knew this before) is graphics intensive. Would you not think that shared video instead of a dedicated video card makes a difference?

I am noticing when I open up from the "Go Box" such as typing in a passage and loading up everything brings up the happy "not responding" signal - when I type in from search and build slowly from there, I do not get the "not responding" ---

And you are correct regarding where Toshiba has its default settings - "Balanced" - I just switched it to "high performance" and hopefully the Power Bill will not careen out of control!!!??? I'll follow the tweaks you've suggested. Let me hear back from you regarding the dedicated video card - you know what I'm using - a Toshiba L675-00X, so when you read the specs, I'm not on a high end machine. And Toshiba is not putting a dedicated video card in their Satellite units with the 17" - they do with the 15:6 but nothing new in the 17" - crazy, hey?

You should be able to increase the amount of memory shared with your onboard video card via BIOS. Let me know if you are not sure how to do this, and we may be able to help you out.

The only thing we have to go on are reports by users here, but many of those who have switched from integrated to dedicated video cards have noticed an improvement. As you may know an integrated video card uses the main CPU and usually main RAM for a portion of its operation. This, obviously means less is available for the other stuff Logos and all your other Windows programs/services are doing with that same RAM and CPU. Since you have a 64bit OS, you could increase your system RAM, and it may help some, but you probably wouldn't notice unless you have a lot going on in the background besides Logos.

BTW, I should have mentioned this before, when you switch to "high performance" you should make sure you have good circulation all the way around your laptop. Using it on your lap, or even on a soft surface can restrict the airflow and overheat the CPU. If your system functions properly the computer will shut down to save itself. If it doesn't it could overheat and damage the motherboard. The "high performance" option won't use that much more power than you're already using, but if you're running on battery, it will drain the battery somewhat faster.

Richard, I've got the max as far as RAM is concerned - that being 8 GIGS. I've got a wide clearance with regards to cooling and a Fire Extinguisher somewhere close at hand. :-}

I only report what some have said, namely, that installing a dedicated video card improved the performance of their laptop. I'm not sure what the possibilities are for your Toshiba, but I'd be surprised if you had to shell out that much for a decent video card. Check on one of the main sellers, or do a search for dedicated video card for Toshiba [model #]. CAVEAT: there is not guarantee that this will solve your issue, nor improve performance. The results are anecdotal, and that's never totally reliable. The issue could be elsewhere on your machine, anything from the CPU cache size/speed to the throughput on your hard drive, to the software setup within the OS, to the BIOS itself. The best thing to do (IMHO) is to try the cheap solutions first (upgrade all your drivers & BIOS, if applicable & follow the instructions in the Wiki about speeding up Logos). At that point you can start thinking about hardware solutions. After all, you don't want to have to cut back on your Tim-bits any more than you have to. [;)]

[Sorry, I misread your specs about 4GB vs 8GB RAM. You have more than enough RAM for your system to work as it should.]

If you reboot your laptop, just as it's turning back on there should be a note with which key to press to enter the BIOS. Common keys include Tab, F2, F4, and Delete (with F2 being the most common).

The message may read something like this: "Press F2 now to enter Setup"

Once you're in, you will have to look around a little bit to find your shared video memory. I couldn't find specific information to your laptop's shared memory in a quick Google search, but I'm at work so with a little more time you may have better results.

Anyway, glance around Setup/BIOS for something like "Shared Video Memory" or "Graphics Memory Allocation" and increase it to the max (you can afford to do this with 8GB of RAM!).

Yo Richard - the 1300 - 1600.00 is not for a video card - it would be for a whole new unit. One cannot install a video card on this particular Laptop. Thus, the amount of money I mention is for a new Laptop. I talked with a Representative from Toshiba the other night and he said with the Satellite units, there is nothing they are making with a dedicated video card - that is, with the 17" models. Asked why, he said it all came down to the market. Strange though, for other Laptops do have dedicated video cards.

Jonathan, my *problem* isn't a big enough problem for me to tear into the Bios and increase the memory. At least, I don't think it is. I appreciate your efforts though and your suggestion(s). It's not that I will not, but for me to gain a greater speed, I'm thinking I will have to go from a 5400 rpm Hard Drive to a 7200 rpm and to a 1 or 1.5 Gig video card. If I do gallop into the Bios though and seek to change it, I'll give a report as to what takes place - if it works, or if my machine bursts into a ball of flame!!!

From where I'm standing now, I think opening up Logos a bit at a time instead of loading up hordes of material at the same time will speed me up somewhat and get rid of the aggravating "not responding" signal.

Any further suggestions though, flip them over this way. Everything you folks have stated is so much appreciated. Thanks a bunch!!!

FWIW, I just got "Not Responding" when using the "Go" box but a new Home Page was loading at the time. Do you need to use "close all" ?

FWIW - I have the same issue - I'm on Toshiba too - a cheap one I've just assumed it was because I don't have enough RAM - I've only got 2 Gigs right now, although we're going to be upgrading to 6 or 8 soon. I know this isn't too helpful - just wanted to let you know you're not the only one Misery loves company, right?

I get the 'Not Responding' message all the time. I just assumed it was normal. I have been on Logos 4 from Day One. I first had it on a Toshiba that ran everything else great. But, Logos 4 in all its wonder, will reveal the cracks in your system. The Toshiba was running Windows 7 32 bit with 2 GB RAM and an integrated video card.

So, in the last couple of months, I have been blessed and able to replace that laptop with a new one with an i5, running Windows 7 64 bit with 8GB RAM and a 1GB dedicated AMD Radeon DirectX 11 video card. It is way faster. But, I still get the 'Not Responding" message.

It is just an annoyance. But, it doesn't last long - 10-15 seconds... But, Logos 4 does SO much, it is minor.

If you worked through Camp Logos Live, Morris loves to use keystrokes and drummed it into us to "close all" or Ctrl + Shift + w, when we were done with one task and on to the next. I use it as I was taught and do not get the "not responding" message, nor do I get it when I use the Go box. My computer is not super duper-Dell Inspiron 1520 w. 4 gig of Ram. FWIW

Bill, you've put me to rest regarding the video card trick. I've not a dedicated video but even with Logos, this unit is fairly fast - sufficient for the present writer.

Joan - there is something wild, weird & wonderful with this "close all" - at least on some units. For sure, one of the super-techs at Logos ought to bring this thing down to the wire and present a fix. If so, it will at least save us a bit in anti-depression pills!??! :-}

Joan has probably answered WHY you use it, but my question regarded the NEED, without implying that you close an alternate way e.g. if you open Logos to the Home Page then generate the default layout for a passage from the Go button why Close All when you can return to the Home Page or generate another passage from PG in the default Layout (I note that you have to add Link A to the PG and EG)? When you've finished a session just close L4. I would load a saved Layout because I do not work from the Home Page.

On my laptop Close All takes 3.2s (4s visually) to close all panels because it creates bookmarks and a snapshot of the layout then uploads preferences for the resources (another 3.5s). It takes about the same time (4s) to load a new layout with the same number of resources & tools. Admittedly I do not get "not responding" but I do get the spinning wheel after clicking the Go button. Given that, I'm glad I work with saved layouts for different tasks and use the Home Page only when needed.

Initially, but unused (system) resources are quickly handled by the "garbage collector" and returned to the operating system.

I'm suggesting you avoid Close All to reduce the incidence of "not responding" messages. I don't think it is necessary as you can return to the Home Page when you've finished with a passage.

Closing the whole program after a few hours of work will assist the garbage collection (as above).

Thanks for the instruction Dave. This is helpful. I have four saved layouts. Opening up two brought up the *not responding" and also closing down did the same. Two of the layouts did not. So tell me this is not weird and wonderful.

Anyway, I shall proceed with your advice. Much appreciated. :-)
