Scroll Problems with Logos 4 Windows 7 and laptop touchpad

Has anyone reported or is anyone but me having problems scrolling using a Laptop touch pad?

I can't give complete details but it seems the scroll function on my laptop is really hit or miss when I try to use it with Logos 4. In fact unless I use the up and down elevator buttons at the top and bottom of the scroll bar I can't really scroll in Logos windows.

Here is what I did. I did a search for "Reform Theology" I get many hits and when I try to scroll through them on my Laptop it is hit or miss. It definitely is doing pretty much what it wants instead of what I want. I have tried the up and down arrow keys but they only work within a section if I want to go from books to documents I actually have to mess around with the up and down elevator buttons at the top and bottom of the scroll bar.

I have tried the same search on my desktop that has a mouse and scrolling with wheel on the mouse works flawlessly. However that windows is XP.

I haven't tried a mouse connected to the lap top so I can't say if that works or not. However I suspect it is a touchpad scroll problem in Logos 4

Any help or suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Until then I guess I can up the up arrow and down arrow on the scroll bar but it is frustrating since I got use to using the scroll function on the touch pad and it with everything else it seems to work flawlessly.

What is your laptop touchpad (Synaptics?) and what do you mean by "scroll function"? My Synaptics has "one finger scrolling" and "two finger scrolling" options but i keep the scrolling region small and only enable "two finger" to avoid scrolling inadvertently. Vertical scroll works in Library but I prefer to use the scroll bar & pointer.

It used to be a known issue with Synaptics touchpads working with Logos 4 long time ago. The problem was on the Microsoft side (NET?). Here is a thread dealing with the issue: http://community.logos.com/forums/t/16042.aspx

I had the problem on my DELL laptop and it was resolved long time ago with Microsoft NET updates and Synaptics driver updates.

My laptop is a Lenovo g560 with Elantech touchpad. By scroll function I mean the one finger scroll down the right side of the touchpad. It wants to scroll I see the scroll (double arrow in was box) icon but the I can't get the actual screen to scroll consistently. It will move a little stop go back, not do anything just generally do what it wants. It is like Logos 4 doesn't handle the touchpad scroll function. If the scroll indicator didn't appear on my screen I would suspect it to be a driver or hardware problem but the scroll indicator appears but Logos 4 doesn't scroll. Very Frustrating.

I then tried the direction keys (keyboard up down right left) and using the up and down I can get it to scroll but it will only scroll within it's grouping. Example I do a search on "reform theology" and get hits in the grouping of documents and another grouping of books that mention the words reformed theology. If I get my cursor in the books group I can more up and down within that grouping but I can't get the cursor to go up in the documents group. To do that I have to click on the up arrow in the actual scroll bar.

I have the latest drivers on for my touch pad and I'm totally up todate in both Windows 7 and Logos 4.

The only thing that works consistently on my laptop is the up and down arrow in the actual scroll bar at the top and bottom.

Okay I went back to my laptop and played around a bit.

Here is the story, perhaps the scroll is working as designed I have no idea.

I do a search for Reformed Theology from home page.

I get a list of my results in the left column the first section is titled "My Content" where I have a document on Tulip

The next section is Library Results which as 6,447 results in 997 articles in 107 resources. Everything is fine.

Now I want to scroll down my list to see which book or document I want to open. I go to the scroll position on the touchpad and swipe down expecting the it to smoothly scroll down. However it only scrolls one position. I do it again and again it only scrolls one position down.So in effect each movement of my finger down on scroll portion of my touch pad results in movement of the page scrolling one book. If I use the up and down arrow which are at the top and bottom of the scroll bar if I hold the left click button it will scroll smoothly to the bottom of the list as I would expect the scroll function on the touch pad to do.

Now if I hit the up or down arrow on keyboard it will scroll down one book at a time but if I come back up through the Library Results it won't go into the "My content" section without me physically locating the cursor there by touchpad.

If I go back to my Library Results and click the first one 1 Timothy: MacArthurs New Testament Commentary and click it shows to places where my search argument had hits. If I click one I open a new window on the right side of my screen which is the article. I can scroll up and down it fairly smoothly not the best but fair.

However if I go back to the left side and click tulips in the "my content" section I open anothe window on the right (actually overlay the window there) I see my document on tulip. Now if I scroll there it moves one section or paragraph as a time if I press the up or down arrow in the scroll bar it smoothly scrolls one sentence after another as I would expect the scroll feature on the touchpad to do.

Is this how it should work? Someone in another thread suggestted I open Logos as the administrator by right clicking the Logos Icon and click that option> I did this and it didn't seem to make a difference.

Any help or suggesttion will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!!!!

What you describe looks very similar I had before it was solved by the Microsoft NET updates and Synaptics updates of drivers for my laptop DELL XPS M1330 touchpad. See above links for more information.

Now my touchpad scrolls exactly the same way as you would use a middle wheel on the mouse. I hope you will find a solution for your touchpad.

I can't add to what's already been pointed out ... the issue with Synaptics, Dell, etc that goes back early-on.

However, I can easily replicate what you're describing and I don't use my Dell touchpad (having never tried to fix it vs Logos). My understanding is the Touchpad driver basically creates either page-up/down events or arrow-up/down events. Since the Logos4 search doesn't handle the page-up/down consistently, any Touchpad usage will be similar.

On my PC, the differentiator of working or not working is whether the search resource is expanded or not. If not expanded, the paging works fine; if expanded, you then have to switch to the arrow-up/down. I'm not sure if this is specific to 'me', 'Dell', MS, or what. It kind of explains a little of why Dave's works as described (if I understand him correctly).

In any event. I've long given up on L4's search box and use L3, where paging is great, copying is great, and it's only a few seconds (true) slower than L4.

I am confident Halo Hound will graciously disagree (smile).

My question is Logos aware of this and are they working on it or is this something I must live with. I have the latest drivers, I have all the updates for MS NET.

Well, I can't speak for Logos obviously; I can only observe. And many on this forum have a systems background, so each will have their own opinion.

But my impression, is that they're plugging into pre-existing routines (e.g. from MS, etc) that place constraints on the user interface (like handling arrow-keys vs paging-keys relative to the scroll bar). In other words, I doubt the Logos programmers haven't already noticed the problem and concluded it's not any easy fix. Programmers typically like good user-interfaces, either relative to the keyboard or mouse.

If that were true, complaints are worthwhile (that's how companies derive customer-dissatisfaction). But I wouldn't put much money on a fix, especially when they're trying to juggle multi-platform support.

I know this 'sounds' negative, but absent Logos' headaches with IE, Libronix3 was (and is) a very good piece of programming. I think the Logos4 concept is similar to a 1960s Jaguar XKE; if you're going to change anything, be very careful.
