RC1 Feedback, PBB "How-To" Missing

While PBB was in beta, this wouldn't have been a valid comment. But now that PBB is in 4.30.0.1498 RC1, it's time to make the How-To help for it real. Unhelpfully, it currently just opens the "Help" file, which doesn't have ANY info about PBB's. Searching on personal book in the help file (no quotes) finds only privacy info. Searching on "personal book" with quotes finds nothing.

Steps to duplicate:

  1. Tools | Personal Books
  2. How-To
  3. L4 Help file opens, but there's no help for Personal Books in it. PBs aren't even in the list of Tools.

Recommend this be fixed before the RC label is removed.

Grace & Peace,
Bill

Thanks for the response, & you're right... here's hoping it's fixed before the release goes gold, however. [:)]

Tanya, how about something like this for PBB, to make it easier to link to resources.

Sorry to be thick, but what exactly are you asking for in your screen shot? Maybe I'm being very simple, but I don't see anything in there that doesn't already seem to be present . [:)]

A link that will automatically format for PBB. That way we eliminate having to know how to format the various syntaxes, milestone, datatype, etc.. In the same way I type a Bible verse and it just formats itself, I would like the same for the other resources. Copy and paste.

I am also confused. you cant automatically create links without having anchors to set the destination too, or you will have chaos

likewise milestones IMO need to be set manually, but you could possibly write a macro to add them but it would not be 100% accurate, if its for you alone then you may decide its not needed, you would need to look at your manual for how to

If PB its for sharing then, sadly like anything in this life, if its gonna be done correctly it needs planning and progress is through prayerful thought  and consideration of the possible recipient and making their life easier by doing the best job you can.. in the time you have.. maybe you could get someone to help you if its a big project..

Thanks DominicM. This beta is the first time that I have ever created a PBB. Much to learn. How about some examples using various commentaries, regular books, etc.. The more the better.

That is certainly something you could suggest via the normal routes: suggestion forum, uservoice, etc.  Though, not being a developer or someone involved in design decision-making, I couldn't speak to the possibility/feasibility of such a tool (or, really, how much easier it would make the process.)  As an aside, the URL link there should make usable links for inserting locations from Logos resources into your Personal Books.

What I can speak to is the fact that we are developing some helps for Personal Books, including syntax.  The article for Personal Books in the help file, for example, will contain the basic syntax formats.  There will likely also be a support article(s) on the Logos.com website as well.

Those things will be available in addition, of course, to the page already available on the Logos public wiki posted by some of our very benevolent users: http://wiki.logos.com/Personal_Books

You know that you don't have to do any formatting, right? The degree to which you format is up to you. I have items that I did no more than copy and paste as well as items that I did extensive formatting because I wanted very particular layout and behavior.

I see that there has been a new update to Logos 4.3 SR-2:

I went to my PBB's page, my books are displayed, when I go to open them they are not available?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi Stephen

Can you provide a bit more information please?

    • What happens when you click on "Open" against a PB?
    • If you try rebuilding them, does that fix the problem?
    • Are you able to create new PBs?
    • Can you open compiled PBs from your library?

Are you opening these books on the same computer in which they were compiled? If you try to open a book on another computer, you will see the books displayed, but they will not be available. I asked you a couple of follow up questions in another thread, but perhaps you didn't see that. [:)]

    Dear Sir,

Below are three snaps, my books, are displayed when I go to open them they are not attached, and when I click on the open, obviously there is no file to open.

I made these on my PBB's Mac, (as the PC I have puts them in and the Mac cannot see them); the PC and the Mac were ok until the new update came in.

So, it appears I'll have to rebuild them, I have over 30 PBB's on here and a further 100 plus ready, I don't want to loose them again if I have put them all on.

    Hope you can follow this.

Yes I have made one of the them up and it works.

But, I don't want to do this lot again

They are not available on the PC now.

    Stephen -

I am still not sure if I follow. Let me explain building Personal Books as clearly as I can to make sure we are on the same page.

Personal books begin as .docx files (which you are already aware). When you "create" a PB on Logos, you have to add a .docx file into Logos and then "compile" the book. If you have multiple computers with Logos, the information (including book cover) will sync with all the computers, but the necessary .docx file will not. Also, part of the "information" that syncs between computers is the location of the .docx file. If you create an identical path for the .docx file (and figure out a way to sync that .docx file between computers), then all you have to do is to compile the book on each computer. If the .docx file is not where Logos thinks it should be, you will have to navigate to the new location and add it in. If you re-compile the book on one computer, the "location" information for that book will change for the other computer. NOTE: Once a book is compiled on a computer, you do not need the .docx file unless you need to update the PB. Of course, you never know when you might come across a typo, or a broken link, etc, so a "best practice" would be to find a good place for the .docx files, organize them, and then leave them there.

The screenshot you have that says: "Resource Unavailable" is exactly what you would expect to get on a computer where the PB has not been compiled. One question I am unsure about: If computer "A" has a compiled book and computer "B" changes the file and compiles it there, will the user receive a "Resource Unavailable" warning back on computer "A"?

    Hi Alabana

I have compiled all my books on my Macbook, I have moved the files into "dropbox"

If I read this correctly, I need to leave the docx files in a directory so Logos 4 knows they belong to me?

    Stephen

    Stephen -

It's not that Logos "needs to know that they belong to you", but yes, you should leave the .docx files in a directory. And they need to be on BOTH computers. And if possible, they need to be in the same PLACE on both computers. This does get a bit tricky when you are mixing windows computers with Macs, since they use different file systems.

    1. The .docx file needs to be on both computers.

    2. It is best if the .docx file is in the same place (directory structure) on both computers. This is like a husband and wife "fighting" over where to put the remote for the TV. If the husband always puts it on the counter, he will have to go looking for it when the wife puts it in the drawer! (Yes, this happens to me [:D])

    3. The personal book needs to be compiled on each and every computer. This is how the book gets put into Logos.

    4. If a book was compiled on computer "A" but not "B", you will get a "Resource Unavailable" warning on computer "B" until you compile it on computer "B"

    5. The .docx files can be deleted after you compile, but you should not do this. If the document ever needs to be changed or recompiled, you need the original .docx file.

I see that you added to your last post while I was working on my reply... Some questions:

    1. How many computers do you run Logos 4 on?

    2. What kind of computers are they? (Mac & PC, right?)

    3. Has all of your PBB work been on a single computer, or on more than one?

    4. Is the "Resource Unavailable" warning showing up on the computer that you compiled the book on?

As for dropbox... this is a good way to share the .docx files between two macs or two pc's. It may not be the best way to share between a Mac & PC. Someone did give me a work around, but since I do not have a PC, I can't remember what that workaround is.
