How can I find the 2/3 letter root of Hebrew word in Bible? I am using Logos 4 Platinum. Your help is greatly appreciated.
Blessings
Use BDB
Will BDB show the root word within the software anywhere next to the Hebrew word? Thanks for your help.
Thanks Mr David. I saw that.
HALOT could be more convenient for you because it is not ordered by roots. I keep forgetting not everyone identifies the root intuitively.
On the other hand, since BDB is organized on the tri-literal roots, related words based on the roots are usually listed after the article on the root. So, if you click from a noun based on a verbal root, for instance, to open it in BDB, usually all you need to do to find the root is scroll up a bit in BDB to the main article dealing with the root.
Recognizing the root is something which comes with practice which means that one must read the literature. Another element which comes into play is learning the patterns by which different roots are developed. There are certain characteristics which indicate whether a verb is one form (such as a qal) or another form (such as a hiphil). There are also certain patterns which characterize various weak verbs. By combining learning the patterns (I'm not saying "learning the paradigms") and practice in recognizing these through reading one eventually learns to recognize the root. With the linking which is incorporated into Logos, it really makes little difference whether one uses HALOT or BDB as far as locating the root is concerned unless it has been mistagged. Of course, you can always cheat and look at the pop-up at the bottom of the page.
