Pointers on Notes

I'm now a couple of months into a migration from a competing program to Logos. I've got 10 years worth of exegetical notes (mostly lexical and syntactical notes) that I hope to slowly migrate into Logos. The problem is I'm a bit unsure about just how to set up the notes files. I understand the difference between notes that are unattached, notes attached to a bible reference and notes attached to specific references in specific resources. I think the bulk of my exegetical notes should be verse notes....but I'm unsure how to organize those files. From someplace I picked up the idea of using many small notes files. So far I've been creating a new note file for each pericopae I'm studying then organizing the notes using the favorites hierarchy. My concern is that I'll soon have too many files to control. Would you suggest using one note file per pericopae or one per chapter / book / testament? It kills me to loose work, so any suggestion that will help me stay organized as I develop notes over time would be appreciated.

Apologies for potential note migration change: on 9 August, Logos 4.3 stable version was released that includes Personal Book Builder (PBB) with tagging options so can create your own commentary for link set scrolling (with Table of Contents).

I would strongly encourage you to consider using Word and any number of Docx files to bring your notes into Logos via PBB as KS4J suggested.

1. You can Easily back up your docx files.

2. Your notes can be set to scroll along with your Bible study.

Having kept my notes elsewhere for years I am also at the planning stage in a very similar project. I'm not yet sure whether I'm going to have separate OT and NT files? Or further separation. Right now I am discovering that one monolithic docx seems to tax my system as I edit it a bit more than I'm willing to work with.

Thanks....incidently I am running the release version of 4.3 and have played around a bit with PBB. I'm a little suprised here.....I had assumed that exegetical notes were best kept in note files tied to either passages or resource locations. What is the advantage of PBB over note files?

It may be that I've just got BibleWorks on the brain, but BW's system of verse and chapter notes is what I'm used to.

Well, if these are the three sentences per verse that were a bit too big for the margins of your study bible, then you are fine and your assumption is valid. If, on the other hand, your "note" is many pages long, as it contains large quotations from various commentaries, maybe employs tables, graphic illustrations and elaborate formatting, then (judging from heaps of forum posts describing this situation) they go beyond the intended capabilities of L4 notes, will slow down syncing and the overall performance experience.

Maybe one can put it like this: if you'd type your notes in Notepad or another small editor, they are fine for Logos. If you'd use the power of Word, then PBB is the tool for you (maybe built your one commentary set, which flows with the bible, is found in Passage Guides etc)

I am also at a stage of transitioning away - which is why I'm more tempted to have 66 *.docx files linked into one PBB. I am not at all predisposed to copying my often rather large verse by verse notes into Logos verse notes.

For me a primary reason to consider docx/pbb instead of Logos notes is that I can back up my notes directory.

I'm a planner so I'm still working on exactly what I want to do before I do any of it.

Bingo.....nice distinction using the notepad / word metaphor. Yes, my first concern is the notes I'd normally scrawl in the margins of various bibles and some hyperlinks to important lexical and historical citations. One large note file, 66 (plus apocrypha and other) files, or one per pericopae?

I have yet to start using Notes in Logos because of the lack of functionality. However I remember (I think Bob but maybe one of the developers) writing that when the notes facility was designed they envisaged people having mostly one file per verse and at the most one file per pericope. The have been 'surprised' by the penchant for keeping lots of notes in a single file.

A single file is more like a commentary - and is better suited to the PBB model.

Thanks for the clarification. The one file per verse/pericope model is what I'd actually prefer. That model works in BW because making the notation automatically creates the note file, and going to the verse automatically loads the file. Neither of those is true in Logos. As it is, one file per either will swamp everything quickly. Wow....that's quite a box in which end users are working right now.

How do you keep notes at present?
