Want to download only a subset of my library

How can I download only some of the books in my library? I am setting up a Macbook AIR with dual boot Windows 7 and Mac OSX. This is an auxillary laptop, doesn't really need the full compliment of books.

I bought upgrade to Logos 4 and I dont like how logos wants to download my entire library of 7.13 GB of books. There are really only a few that I really need.... On the win side I have Libronix 3 (with about 1GB of books installed) & Logos 4 installed which wanted all 7GB of my library to be installed, and now putting Logos 4 on the macosx side, it's now downloading 7.13GB also.... Thats a lot of duplication.

So how do I:

* Share the same downloaded resources between Mac & Windows (each OS can read the others files, but they can't update the others files)

* download only a subset of my books

* can i share one set of downloaded book files between logos 3 & 4

Also what happened to the start page that I had with my collection under Libronix 3.0. There was a nice start page for the SDA Bible Commentary that provided boxes to search that collection by phrase, by Bible verse, or nice drop down lists of all EGW books both by name and abbrevation to make it easy to get to specific books. I can't find this with 4.0.

I do not know the answers to your technical questions - hopefully someone else will chime in soon.

The short answer is that you can't. There is a way to "hide" resources, which does remove the resources from your computer (but not your account). However, this method applies the change to every computer you have, not just your MBA.

You best bet might be to use biblia.com. It will have most of your resources (but only those that the publishers allow).

Technically challenging. Logos 4 locally indexes resources; due to different file path conventions, indexes not shareable. Hence, adding or updating resource(s) needs indexing updated on Mac and Windows. Downloading into one Logos 4 installation, then using scan command in other installation can avoid two downloads. Option: turn off automatic download of updates in one installation, use scan command to copy resources from other installation, then use update now command for program updates. Logos 4 can read Libronix 3 files. However, many Libronix 3 resources have been updated for Logos 4, which are not readable in Libronix 3.

Logos 4 does not have Libronix 3 start page customizations, but does have => Favorites and shortcut bar. Wiki Getting Started with Logos => Collections has some tips and links for creating and managing Logos 4 collections. Libronix 3 had workspaces that became layouts in Logos 4; wiki => Layouts

If Alabama's tip doesn't work for you, make sure you read the complete thread posted earlier with reference to Logos' Bradley Granger. In this thread there are technical solutions offered - look for the tips from "Keep Smiling 4 Jesus", as he is an admitted expert for Logos on Mac and his proposed solution might be the workaraound you are looking for.

Thanks for all the answers and warm welcomes.... I decided to stop the mac download last night. Instead I will investigate using VMWARE Fusion to share the Windows copy of Logos 4 into the mac OS side of things. VMWare Fusion says it can let me run my Windows apps within Mac OS through what they call "Unity" display. So no real need to have two copies installed on same machine.

Controlling what gets downloaded upon initial install would be my number one vote for critical missing feature. I did see other threads about hiding, but am not sure if I like the idea that hiding on one will hide for all my machines. That has pluses (do it once, and everwhere gets the benefit of that work) and minuses (do it once and everyone gets limited).

Libronix worked well with the original SDA collection I bought, and it didn't scale so well with adding Scholar Gold and a bunch more resources on top of that. Searches seemed slower, and on searches I got a lot of extraneous results that caused me to lose focus on the original Commentary and EGW collection I had bought. So on later computers I limited what I would install to the original collection plus just a few other authors, like MacArthur and Geisler, and not too many others. Hopefully Logos 4 scales better.

Thumbs up to being able to run Libronix 3 & Logos 4 side by side. I had trouble getting Logos 3 to read resources from the science and theology collection. I am probably going to have to uninstall Libronix 3 and start over. My original SDA collection is a much older version of Libronix, and apparently the order of upgrades is touchy, some intermediate steps give me Libronix versions that dont really like Windows 7, and the various extra collections I bought are probably on different versions of Libronix.

I spent way more time yesterday trying to get Logos 3 setup with a subset, and at one point it lost the subset. Without uninstalling I kept arguing with it, feeding it images to reload resources from..... So I decided to go ahead and give the upgrade a try when I discovered it was only going to be $180 instead of the $450 I had first seen, which was an upsell... I didn't get a lot of time to use Logos 4, (less time than I spent fiddling with Libronix 3 install.)

The main feature I wanted to see was my old start page, and to be able to go to a Bible verse and as I scroll the Bible have my favorite commentary scroll with it. My heart sank when those things werent immediately obvious.

It took me a little while to find the info about linking windows, and at first try I wasn't too impressed. Perhaps Logos 4 was still busy doing some indexing. But on a later launch of Logos, the linked view of the Bible version I want, and the SDA commentary, and several other panes really came alive, and I am very impressed.... I want to do a read through the Bible, but also read through the entire commentary at the same time, so I probably need to create a three year plan, since the extra panels that Logos 4 presents with related verses and other materials is quite interesting, and this will take me a lot longer....

Despite working in the computer industry, I am extremely skeptical of cloud solutions where I trust someone else to stay around and give me access to what I've bought. I like to have my own copy of all my bits that I can be responsible for losing.

This should work fine, depending on your computer's specs. I went the Fusion route for a while as development on the Mac version continued. There were times when I noticed things getting bogged down (after all, running Fusion means your computer is providing resources to two operating systems at once!) but on the whole it worked fairly well.

There are a few things you can do to make reinstallation easier. This would also serve as a kind of emergency backup, just in case. See:

If you find that searching your whole library is unwieldy, you might want to look into creating some specific collections and searching within those collections. That way you could still have all your books on your computer but limit your searches to a collection of specific resources. Some Wiki posts that may help:

Uh oh... Looks like I didn't really interrupt the Mac download by closing Logos... I just rebooted, and noticed a logos icon in the toolbar, which says it is 2% complete on indexing...Apparently Logos finished the download during the night, it chewed up 1/3rd of the free space on my mac side.

I wonder how to customize the "newspaper" home screen. What just came up is somewhat interesting, but looks like it is mainly a way to try and sell me more books, which is not really what I want...

How about this: 1 collection of the SDA/EGW related materials, and a second collection of all the creation science books I have, and maybe a third collection on psychology. I would like the newspaper just show me one or a few articles from each of those (plus maybe some cool word of the day insite). And, oh, alright, Logos gets to show me one infomercial article, but only one!!!!! And I guess it could even put the rest of the stuff later. I want to get to know my EGW materials more than any of the other resources, so I would like those articles first. (Yeah, I found the customize menu and its just checkboxes... Would love to see a way to add random articles from a selected list of collections.) The list of things shown in the top ribbon of the home page, I gotta figure out how to customize that too, I dont like the order...

What came up on the mac side didn't seem to know about the cool linked layout for bible verse/commentary and other resources I was last using on the Windows side. I thought i saw somewhere that was supposed to be shared.... Oh ok, found I just need to pick it from the layout menu. Wow really cool....

I am looking forward to trying the personal book builder.... Is there any kind of scripting available for use with Logos 4? I've got thousands of other "books" in PDF and .HTML form I would love to add to my library.

Using Logos 4 Windows, can drag and drop Home Page customization to rearrange order, which is included in wiki Mac and PC User Interface Differences => Feature Parity section.
