When creating a personal book, how do you create the side navigation/titles for chapters etc?

if you use the "Heading Styles" for your Chapters and subtopics it will atomatically create them

As DominicM said, you use the "Heading" styles. FYI - You can create new ones based upon the originals if you want. Also, "Heading 2" will "nest" inside of "Heading 1" and so on. This will require advanced planning for more complicated works. For example: If you have several "parts" in a book, each with "chapters" and "subheadings", make sure you plan for this.
Thanks... I did notice that the heading font sizes seem a little temperamental. I have them all the same sizes in each Word document (H1), but only a few of them build as the right size...others come out smaller for some reason?
