WORD Document Fails to Compile in Personal Book

For some reason one of my WORD [docx] files will not compile. It appears not to be a corrupted file. [It opens fine on the computer.] But when I attempt to build a Personal Book with it I get the error message ERROR WHILE READING DOCUMENT. Any suggestions?

Docx-Files are nasty heaps of XML chunks, which may be non-understandable for the Logos PB compiler. Try saving the file as RTF, then opening the RTF and re-saving as Docx to get rid of such stuff. If this doesn't help, try turn on Logging and post your log as well as (if possible) the document and maybe a screenshot or precise description of your steps and situation leading to the error.
Hope this helps,
Mick

I have had a similar problem with a 500(!) page document. By trial and error (i.e. chopping the book up into smaller .docx files), I was able to isolate the issue to a 10 page section (at the very end!). I did not ever discover the issue, but I was able to resolve it. The trick was to "clear all formatting". I helped another user last night with the same issue. When I tried to compile his .docx, I got the same error message. When I cleared all formatting, I flew through. Once you have cleared the formatting, you can go back and put it the way you want.
If you want me to take a look, you can upload the .docx file here.

First, let me clarify. You need to clear the formatting in WORD. If the document is the way you want it, I would save a copy first.
My panel may look different than yours (I use Mac's), but this is what my "styles" panel looks like:
If you have difficulties with this method, (and if your document is not sensitive in nature), feel free to attach it to a posting and I will take a look.

I know that 'Clear Formatting' will solve the problem of not being able to build a PB, but it will also cause you many hours reformatting everything! I started doing this for a +400 pages document (with many diagrams and transliterated Greek text), and it's just undoable (even after splitting it up in smaller sections). It will take me a week to finish this. Unless there is a quicker solution, I will just give up converting bigger documents....

if you should use Word 2007 on Windows, it looks different (had to visit help myself to locate it...)
- so you select your text and then use this button:
Be aware that this really does what it says: no bold, no italics, no Heading style - i.e. no structure anymore in your text. You know for sure, that it's advisable to do such things on a copy... (the saving as *.RTF, which may work or may not, is much less cumbersome - if I were you, I'd try that first)

Did you try to compile the book based upon smaller .docx files? I took a 500 page book and was able to check each of the 8 sections. I was able to find the section that was causing trouble and just work on that section.
I will see if I can make heads or tails of your doc.

Yes, I tried using smaller files, even adding one page at a time (so that I would find out what exactly was causing trouble), but almost every other page seems to contain something that leads to the error message when Logos compiles the book. Please see this file with just a few pages. Would you be able to find out what is causing Logos to dislike this file?

I have been able to isolate one of the problems. It is the "§" symbol (what's that called anyway?). I successfully did a replace all and it worked. I tried to do the same with the "chapter 2" you posted yesterday and had no luck. It very well could be another symbol.

I am in the process of building an index of the Journal of Hebrew Scriptures with sections by author and by article title plus a listing of book reviews by title and by book author (not reviewer). Since I had it open and was working on it, I added a section symbol (§ I think that is what it is called) and an indication that it was a test entry then compiled it. It worked.

Strange. It crashes every time for me. Even with the symbol alone. I tried both Times New Roman and Helvetica. Also, I did a replace all and it worked.

At George's gentle prodding... ahem... I went back to the drawing board. I know that I have isolated one issue down to the symbol § in Andre's document. When I replace them it works, when I leave them in it doesn't. I created a new document and pasted in the symbol into the new document and it crashes.
I have created a second document based on the document with the single symbol. I then removed all formatting, and the second document will build. I can't figure out what is in the formatting of the symbol that is causing the problem.

I don't know what the problem is with the § symbol on your system, but here is a shot of a PB to which I added it on my computer.

Download and try the document 2438.Symbol.docx in my previous post. As I said, I was able to build a PB once I removed the formatting on that symbol, as it was originally in Andre's document. I agree it is not the symbol... it is the formatting on the symbol... but what?

I took the first document and noticed that the quick style Normal was set to Cambria but the font of the symbol was Times New Roman. I then selected the symbol, hit Normal in my quick style to force it to comply with the normal formatting and it compiled just fine.

It will not compile as written. How did you enter the symbol? Did you copy and paste or did you enter it from the keyboard? (<alt + 0167> – must use numeric keypad)

I am not following you. Are you saying that you believe it is crashing because "the quick style Normal was set to Cambria but the font of the symbol was Times New Roman"? After your post, I changed the quick style "Normal" to "Times New Roman" and it still crashes. I also changed the font to cambria and that crashed too. I already know that if you change the formatting it will work. The problem I am trying to address is "what was in the formatting in the first place to cause PBB to crash." By answering that question, perhaps we can figure out how to prevent it in the future. Andre's was having difficulties with a 400 page document. I was able to narrow a 15 page section down to that symbol, but as George pointed out it wasn't the symbol. My new assumption is that it is related to the formatting... but what? I know that if I delete or change the formatting that it will work, but doing a mass formatting change on 400 pages is impracticable, plus I would like to know what caused it so that I don't inadvertently put something into my documents!

I copied the symbol directly from Andre's document. I don't know where he got the document from. As I mentioned in the post above, my current theory is that it is something in the formatting of that single character. It would be nice to figure out what it is and to see if there is a way to automate the process of finding others like it.

I suggest you create your own document entering the symbol from the keyboard then compile to see whether your experience conforms to mine.

I was suggesting that the crash was caused by the mismatch in formatting with the style. However, I tried to recreate the situation and it didn't work... so it appears that my idea was wrong, back to the drawing board...

I can't say that I figured it out, but I got it to work. I don't know Word well enough to know how you had everything lined up. I played with spaces (deleting and adding) and cut and pasted down below outside of your box. When I got it to work, I pasted it back above and it worked.
I'll try to mess with your original again later.

Thanks, New Jersey [:)], you didn't show the specifics, but it helped to know that I wasn't beating my head against a wall. I got it fixed.
BTW: I was putting those entries in a table and found that in a table you cannot specify a heading level (or rather, you can specify one but the program won't recognize it).

Actually, you don't have to remove the formatting to do it.
Select all (Ctrl+A) and the run the "Unlink Fields" command by pressing Ctrl+Shift+F9.
It doesn't affect the formatting.

Observation: largest PC manufacturer (HP) wants to sell off PC business to pursue more profitable activities => http://money.cnn.com/2011/08/19/technology/end_of_wintel/index.htm Apple is using its cash horde to pre-pay for new manufacturing equipment so new Apple model pricing is challenging to profitably match => http://techland.time.com/2011/07/27/windows-based-macbook-air-competitors-may-be-pricier-than-anticipated/
Thankful current Mac models can run Logos 4 Mac and Logos 4 Windows (virtually or native boot). Apple pricing for iPad's, MacBook Air's, 13" MacBook Pro, Mac Mini's, and 27" iMac's are attractive.
In contrast, a 17" PC laptop is less expensive than 17" MacBook Pro (can buy a refurbished 17" PC laptop with 2nd generation Quad-Core i7 and a new Mac Mini for less than a refurbished 17" MacBook Pro; can use screen sharing on Mac to display on 17" PC laptop).
Mobile option: mount Mac Mini in a car for portable use with iPad (use screen sharing on iPad to control Mac Mini with Logos 4 Mac), could be used for Personal Book access on the road. Looking forward to Logos 4.5 sync improvements.
Keep Smiling [:)]

Noticed MacBook Air 11" model has 5 hour battery life while 13" model has 7 hour battery life => http://www.apple.com/macbookair/ (also could run using cigarette lighter if needed using Apple MagSafe Airline Adapter). Also, new MacBook Air models have 2nd Generation Intel i5 and i7 processors with Solid State Disks (along with being thin and light), a good combination for Logos 4. Since MacBook Air memory cannot be upgraded, recommend purchasing 4 GB.
By the way, some PC laptops draw too much electrical current for cigarette lighter use. A Dell AC power adapter PA-4E outputs 19.5 volts with 6.7 amps (bit more than available in 12 volt cigarette lighters).
