Can you upgrade your base packages?

Dear All,

I'm considering getting a base package for Logos. I can see the good value of the packages, but I have one small problem - I don't have a lot of cash! Some of the better packages sound a lot better, but at the moment are financially a bit of a stretch.

So I was wondering, theoretically, if I bought say "Christian Home", in two years time would I be able to pay the difference between that and "Bible Study" (or whatever package?) or would I have to pay full price for "Bible Study"?

Does that make sense?

Also if anyone would be able to give me advice on a package I'd be grateful. Currently I do preaching at my church and a youth group, but next year I hope to go into student ministry - leading small groups etc. Long-term I'd like to go into pastoral ministry - though that's a long way off. Currently I spend a fair amount on commentaries. I use NICOT/NT, Pillar and WBC, as well as using Calvin and Matthew Henry from the internet. That is mainly what I would use the software for - as well as storing sermons and study notes for use in the future.

What would you recommend?

The answer for now is "yes". However, a recent post on the L4 homepage suggests that either those discounts are going away or that prices are going up in the near future. LOGOS has made no other comment other than what was posted in this thread:

Yes, you can upgrade base packages, I think it cost a little bit more than the price difference to upgrade rather than purchase outright but not by much if that is the case (it'll probably depend if there's a promotion going on at the time you want to upgrade). Also, Logos does offer payment plans to stretch a purchase out over a year. Those plans have a $5/month administrative cost.

You can always upgrade. Logos has sales from time to time on the base packages, often it is when they have a new version they want to promote.

However, I think that the Christian Home Library is a bad value. It doesn't include Reverse Interlinears, Guides (Passage/Word Study/Exegetical) , Biblical Places/People/Things, Maps/PhotosMedia (except for the hymnal and old Logos maps), Greek/Hebrew Lexicons, or English dictionaries--pretty much everything that makes Logos special.

If you look at the Minimal Crossgrade package that Logos offers version 3 owners to get Logos 4 functionality without buying a V4 base package, you'll notice that the Christian Home library is missing all of those resources/features. And Logos advertises the Minimal Crossgrade as including "only the engine, plus a few essential resources for Logos 4 to work properly"--resources that Christian Home doesn't include.

I'd recommend starting with the Bible Study Library as the minimally useful package. You could order the Christian Home and Minimal Crossgrade packages together, and it would be cheaper than the Bible Study Library, but you'd still be missing stuff (guides, lexicons, etc) and for $40 more you could get better functionality and a lot more books by buying the Bible Study Library

Tim, you can also make payments with a modest $5/month processing fee. Payments can be as short as you need or up to a year, depending on the total price of the upgrade.

That's kind of funny actually. At first I thought the sales guy was just trying to upsell me, but he basically told me if my only option was the Christian Home Library to just wait... even though his commission was at stake. It was about that time I decided he must be serious about how lame the Christian Home Library really is. It is amusing to know that it doesn't work properly according to Logos.

I bought the Bible Study Library to start, and have since upgraded to Scholar's. That's definitely the path I'd recommend if you can't go straight to Scholar's or better.

[Y] That is great. I'm glad you jumped over the Home package. It is useful for basic Bible study but the Bible Study Library has so much more. When you discover the benefits of having more resources you may wish you had gone for a bigger base package Don't despair, just give your sales rep a call. You don't have to wait the whole twelve months to upgrade. The Customer Service and Sales departments can get you the upgrade and re-arrange the payment plan.

I cannot give a definitive answer but my
experience is no. eBible base collections were my first few purchases in
Libronix until I discovered Logos. The only exceptions to the rule may
be certain individual authors authors. It seems that I bought either "J. Vernon McGee Essential Bible Study Library" or "John
MacArthur Essential Bible Study Library" and an upgrade was offered for
one of those two (sorry, I really cannot remember which one). Basically,
you installed the disc and then it gave you the option to unlock more. But for their collections of multiple authors such as "The Essential Bible Study Library eBible" I have never seen any kind of upgrade deal.
