    Michael -

Bob said that this is "coming soon" a while back now. I don't know when they might be ready, but I know that it is sooner than it was [:)]

I'm afraid this has probably taken a back seat to other features and projects. [:(]

Ohhhhh...I didn't see that post yet!  This is very good news!  Thanks for sharing!

  • when???

Suspect "soon" changing to "very soon", but not know "when" will be ready for use by Logos user community.

Noticed last iOS update was version 1.7.4 on 12 Jul 2011 => http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/id336400266?mt=8 (concurrent with Logos 4.3 Beta 12 release).

From Logos 4.5 Beta warnings, anticipating major changes how Notes and Highlighting are saved; Logos 4 has many places for Notes.

Doing data replication well is quite challenging to code (on servers and clients) along with adequate network and server capacity so synchronization just happens.  Hence, Logos 4 and mobile apps may not appear much improved, other than stuff syncing quickly: hopefully including highlighting, notes, favorites, and some preferences along with reading plans.  Perhaps to be followed by Personal Book sync (which would be miles ahead).

Personally willing to wait until Logos ready for public Beta testing with more data volume and issues using revised synchronization framework.

Observation: if revised synchronization framework has issue(s), data replication can be full of surprises (including data corruption, duplication, and/or loss).  Having a stable Logos 4 installation for Bible Study seems prudent (in case of beta burps).  Personally looking forward to beta testing (and potential surprises).  Currently anticipating Logos 4.5 Beta 1 release in two to few weeks; not know when for mobile app updates, which lack option for stable alternative, synchronization needs to just work.

    Keep Smiling [:)]

    Steve -

The "Bread and Butter" for Logos is their desktop app. I have experimented with Olive Tree and agree they have a great mobile app. If your primary desire is for a mobile reading app, stick with them. I am committed to Logos, however, because it is the premiere Bible Study software on PC and Mac. I believe that Logos will step it up when the new syncing infrastructure is implemented with the release of Logos 4.5.

  • and yet Olive Tree manages to do it......

Looking at platform feature list, noticed Olive Tree BibleReader software currently has Notes Backup for 2 out of 12 mobile platforms (iOS and Android) while Personal Notes are available on 5 out of 12 and Highlighting is on 3 of 12 (Android noticeably missing).

In contrast, suspect Logos is actively developing sync framework for 5 platforms: Windows, Mac OS X, iOS, Android, and http://biblia.com (web) that needs to synchronize Logos data in any direction between all platforms.  Also needs to handle Logos 4 installations (on Mac and PC) that are open many hours each day (with automatic sync every 5 minutes) so sync works smoothly without surprises.  Apologies: have experienced Logos 4 sync issues between Mac and PC when both were open to Library prioritization.  Hoping for Logos sync improvement.

Some Logos 4 libraries have extensive Notes from years of Bible study use (many hours every week).

Logos is planning 25,000+ resources for Vyrso this year (also usable in Logos 4) so sync framework needs to handle many thousands of resources (possibly over 40,000 later this year).  By the way, http://vryso.com already has 3,943 Christian eBooks available for purchase, a lot more than 543 offered by Olive Tree.

    Keep Smiling [:)]

Not sure about the reading vs. study.  Olive Tree has a ton of study materials from dictionaries, study bibles, maps, encyclopedias, commentaries, etc.  So, not sure what you mean.  On top of all those study materials, they have highlighting in various colors so you can theme highlight, and they have notes.  Now, I know they do not have computer yet (it comes soon) but I rarely lug my computer to bed, or in my car, or on the plane, or etc etc.  I use my ipad and iphone.  Again, I love the Logos product, but without highlighting, it is second tier.

Not sure about the reading vs. study.

Perhaps I should have said "reading" versus "research." An analogy: In the "Old" days, when you were working on a paper and were reading a book, and it referenced another book you should read, you would have to go to the library and find the book. Logos is like having a personal librarian who nearly instantaneously hands you the book you were going to have to go get. In the "Old" days, if you came across a word or phrase you didn't understand (in English or another language), you would have to figure out how to look it up. In Logos, that information is at your fingertips. Logos is like going to a university library. Olive tree is like going to a small town library. Personally, I have close to 1700 resources. Olive Tree has a third of that.

I love the Logos product, but without highlighting, it is second tier.

Everything that you have said points to you using your software as a reader. I have an iPad and love it. I would never use it to study (research & write papers/sermons). I WILL use it to read more often when Logos adds these features. I admit, Olive Tree does have the leg up on the mobile app reader, but hopefully that will be rectified soon.

perhaps if I were a pastor and tied to my office, you would be correct.  I use my ipad and STUDY.  I can click on links and connect to commentaries, dictionaries, parallel sources, etc.  And then, when I like what I see, I CAN HIGHLIGHT so that I can go back to those verses and I can make notations so that I can do true study.

It is true, I do not use 1700 sources.  I doubt you do, either.

When you read your hard copy of scriptures, do you ever highlight and make notes?  If so, why?

I have not READ 1700 resources. I USE 1700 resources in the sense that when I am studying researching, Logos helps me to find relevant material, and uses the 1700 resources to do so.

When you read your hard copy of scriptures, do you ever highlight and make notes?  If so, why?

I think that you have been offended, and let me offer my apologies. I am using the word study in a very particular way. Of course reading can be studying as well. I highlight extensively when I study/read. Because of this, I do not use the Logos mobile app currently, but am hoping to begin using it soon when these features are added.

Earlier you said that Logos was "second tier." For reading, highlighting, and taking notes on a mobile device, I think you have an argument. However, as I said earlier, this is not Logos' "bread and butter." Hopefully Logos will improve in this area very soon with the release of 4.5 and "sync 2.0".
