Hi Adrian,

I have the same Acer Aspire netbook. I Gb RAM and 160 GB harddrive. I have installed Logos 4 Gold on my Sony Vaio with no problems in under 6 hours. Will the Gold install on the Acer and is there anything I should do special?

I have a little Acer Aspire XP Home, 1 GB RAM and 160 GB hard disk. I have plenty of room on the disk. Is there anything special I should do to load the gold onto my Aspire netbook? It is the one I use the most. It loaded onto my Sony Vaio laptop just fine. That is XP professional, 2 GB.

The best suggestions:

Turn off windows update for the duration of the install/index

Run Logos 4 once after downloading resources to turn off "Automatically Download Updates" and "Use Internet"

Makes sure you have enough space. 10.5Gb of resources created a 3Gb index file. Having at least double that as space on your drive would seem to be wise.

Sit back, have a coffee, followed by dinner, go to bed, get up and it may just be done.

If you have a virus checker running you can leave it on but, if
possible make an exceptiion for the directory that holds your Logos
resources. This is more an afterwards thing but it majes things a
little faster as your "on access" scanner won't be trying to look at
every resource.

Robert, when I saw your reply I laughed, thanks for taking the time to point out that someone needed the help. I've been so impressed with the help given on this forum the last few days. That folk are making the effort to sort out my, and other people's, problems is a real plus for Logos. I think they do know what they've got but I wanted to say that it is much appreciated.

I know you addressed this to Damian and maybe he will pop in here, too. The good news is you already have it up and running on your laptop so you can let it "do its thing" on you netbook, until it is done. Meanwhile, you can use your other machine. Some people have to wait, not having a second system. Enjoy!!!

Yes, I have over 100 GB on my netbook so that should be enough. THe gold was 7.7 GB yesterday and I do not know how to check how much the indexing took up. I did not understand what you said about afterward - turning off the scan on the indexing. I am not good at this stuff.

Another subject: Can anyone tell me why the KJV does not have the Interlinear toggle switch? It is listed on the new compare sheet as being Interlinear in Logos 4.

Are you a LDLS user? With Logos 4 there are sorta 3 different KJV's - the old one from Logos Library System days, the Cambridge Paragraph which came out with LDLS 3 and a new "1900" version, which is the new "standard" text for Logos 4. The last two versions have reverse interlinears available, but the first one does not. On my system the new one which you want is given the title "King James Version" without a "The" before the name.

Depending on the type of virus checker you have, if indeed you have one on your netbook, you can tell it not to look in certain directories on your hard drive. Generally a virus checker will check any file that you open on your computer - whether it really needs to or not. If you are able to turn this "on access" scanner off it can speed things up for Logos because then your resources won't be checked for viruses every time you open them. I've already noticed a difference on my netbook following this advice.

I'm currently using Microsoft Security Essentials and it has this facility in the settings page under "Exclude file & locations". If you're not currently running a virus checker then everything I'v e said will be of no use whatsoever [:D]

If you're wanting to try a virus checker out then I can highly recommend Microsoft's free offering. (Am I allowed to say that on the forum?) MSE really has been good and doesn't slow my netbook down at all - unlike certain other free virus checkers I've tried.

You are so nice to take the time to help. Thank you. I still have no clue what you are talking about. I have McAfee (sp) and it never came with a book (which I would not have read anyway).

However, on the netbooks they have that little switch where you can turn off the Internet. Would that help? Sorry to be such a beginner with all you who know so much. I have never taken a computer class. These days you buy stuff and it never comes with a "how to" book. (kind of like children) Logos is way ahead of that group with al the lovely teaching videos.

If you have easy instructions that would be wonderful. Assume I know nothing and you will have it down.

Hi Catherine,

I'm afraid I've not used McAfee since the 1990s [:)] However, the virus thing isn't essential - if you're happy with the performance of your netbook tweaking your virus checker is justing getting into geek land.

Once you've downloaded all of the resources that come with whichever version you purchased Logos 4 will want to index them. For this indexing stage of things the best thing you can do is to start Logos 4 then click on 'Tools' on the menubar at the top.

From the menu that should appear choose "Progam Settings". This will open a new window with a list of options on the left and choices on the right.

The ones of interest are the first one, "Automatically Download Update" and the last one, "Use Internet" of the top group. You need to set both of this to "No". This will stop Logos 4 from trying to communicate with Logos' servers whilst your computer creates the index.

You may want to reboot the computer at this point. Logos will then start indexing when Windows XP (I'm presuming that that is what you have) restarts. At least that is what I did to get things moving - not sure if it's the official line, but it worked for me. A small blue Logos logo should appear in the tray area near the clock on the task bar. This means that everything is working though it may take a few minutes for it to show up.

Once you have done this you can close Logos 4. The icon will stay and you can hover the mouse pointer over it to get an idea of how long indexing will take. At points it quoted me over 17 hours but actually finished much quicker than that - about 8 hours in total.

Turning off Windows Update might be useful too - sometimes an update to Windows forces a reboot which messes things up. To do that you can go to Control Panel, double-click on "Automatic Updates" and turn them off. Don't forget to turn them back on again afterwards. Same for the Logos 4 program settings.

Final thing would be, if possible have your netbook running from mains current. Even if you have the larger 6 cell battery it might not be up to keeping things going for the whole process as it's quite hard-drive intensive, so would run the battery down fairly quickly.

Does the indexing require Internet access? If not, I would like to turn off my Internet access on the netbook while it is indexing. It is still saying I have 6 hours+ remaining and it has run most of the afternoon and night. McAfee keeps wanting to scan the computer and other such things even though I have turned as much off as I know how on that program.

There should be no trouble turning off your internet access whilst Logos 4 does its indexing thing. The thing that you/we are trying to avoid is having anything new arrive that would either interrupt the indexer by forcing a reboot (Windows Update is notorious for doing that), cause the indexer to restart (updates from Logos might do that) or cause it to slow down too much. It's already a fairly lengthy process so anything that can be done to help is good.

I've been using Logos 4 on the netbook and really enjoying it. It's not quite as fast as on my desktop but searches, Passage Guide and Exegetical Guide are all snappier and turn up their results faster than version 3 ever did. Overall I'm very glad that Damian, in particular, and others encouraged me to stay with it. Well worth the wait.

Thank you both for responding. This little netbook has a small switch on the right front rim of the computer that, if slid to the right and let go, disconnects the computer from the wireless access. It is a brilliant little invention as the builders of the computer probably knew that the Internet would interfere a lot with the speed.

I have now turned the wireless access off and will see how long it takes fr the rest of the indexing. My Sony Vaio (2 Gb) for the Gold package (7.7 Gb) took a total of 6 hours to download and index. The netbook was started yesterday at noon and only turned off for 3 hours last night. So far, that is about 14 hours or so.
