Please improve highlighting performance for markup serious users

Calling all users who are doing serious markup for their Bible studies to cast your vote in uservoice to support raising the priority to improve the highlighting performance in Logos 4.

Problem description: If you do serious markup such as those who do Precept's studies, you will quickly discovered that you will need to wait 5 to 15 seconds for marking or erasing of each markup for a word or a phrase. (the more extensive your markup effort is the slower it becomes; you need to do about 3-4 precept studies to get to 10-15 seconds response time (estimated)). The issue is more pronounced if you do most of your markup in a single resource; in my case, I am using NASB95.

You will not see this problem if you are doing very casual markup; it is instantaneous.

The issue was raise by some forum users in 2010, Logos noted the issue, but, may be it is not yet a priority vs other more pressing requirements.

I moved 3 votes for the cause [:)] I'm a precept user and have noticed how quickly this becomes an issue. My rather unfortunate workaround has been to erase my highlighting once I finish a study.

Ron - Oh no, you erased all your markup after a study without retaining a copy? that is really painful.

I just erased about 2-3 years worth of my markup migrated from L3 to L4, with that my response time improved from 8-10 seconds to under 2 seconds. However, I kept the original highlighting in L3. Hoping that one day when this is resolve, I will then migrate them to L4.

Once again an appeal to the rest in the community, please help to vote for this.

There is a work around that I have used for different purposes. Duplicate the pallette and rename it something like John 1-5, another John 6-10 ... etc. then you can turn off the filter in the sections you're not studying turn in on only where you are studying - and not erase your work.

Thanks for you input, that was what I thought months ago, so I have my L3 and L4 palettes separated. I will normally have my L3 palette turn off in the visual filter when I do not need it. Point I like to make is: merely turning off a palette does not help with the lag in terms of response time to mark or erase a highlighting, for the discussion in this thread.

What I found: After I deleted my L3 palette, which I used for 2 to 3 years from L3 + L4, I discovered that while palette is deleted, the residual markup information is still associated to the resource (in my case NASB95); you will discover that you have a "no palette" palette appearing in your visual filter. I have to select "no palette" and deselect all other palettes to manually remove all the highlighting done over the 2 to 3 years I did on the L3 palette (it is also another painful process - took me 1-2 hours).

Like I said if you do only casual markup, you wouldn't feel it.

A feel for the impact: If I start marking up from resource without any prior markups, I get instantaneous response time. I have just finish marking up the Book of Daniel, I am already feeling the lag of about 1.5 to 2 seconds for each markup. So, you can see that it wouldn't take too long for you to reach 10-15 seconds response time. (By the way I am running a a pretty fast machine)

It is a known issue in the current design; so, I am hoping to get support from the community here to raise the priority of this item, hoping it will get some attention from Logos.

Observation: noticed many inductive highlighting styles change spacing between words (hence highlighting has to recalculate spacing between words) along with adding images.

Wiki Extended Tips for Visual Filters => Examples of visual filters includes Logos Greek Morphology highlighting example to show grammatical usage in Greek and English Reverse Interlinear resources. Visual filters allow for combination to show grammatical usage with minimal images and word spacing change. Note: can take a few seconds to turn on/off (every Greek word has one or more highlights applied).

Just watched your video.

The problem is caused by the highlighting style that moves the text to the left of the icon. Logos recalculates the word position based on the rest of your highlights.

With the way Logos highlighting (and visual filters) works now, any highlighting style that changes font size, or adds anything to that changes line height, or word position, will slow down Logos' response (including start-up time). This effect seems to be cumulative.

I also notice, from your UI, that you are using a Mac. The Mac interface has had some additional performance issues. I don't know whether those issues apply in your case, since I don't follow the Mac forums.

The only work-arounds I know of have been suggested above (turn off as many other visual filters and highlighting as you can while working with the text; enable them when you're done adding/removing highlighting).

While it is true that the highlighting style that I used (with images) would contribute to the slow down. However, I found that even after I have deleted the palette that I used for marking, the time taken to mark or erase a highlight still takes a long time (the purpose of the video is to show that it takes about 10 seconds to mark or erase each highlight).

I discovered accidentally, that deleting palette does not remove residual highlighting information in the resource (like NASB) that was marked. They are gather under a "no palette" palette in the visual filter of the resource.

Further, simply deselecting the palette in the visual filter also does not improve the performance; I have to manually remove all the highlights as explained above.

The problem exist in both Windows and Mac version of Logos 4. No problem for casual markup users. However, for people who use Precept Studies (as example) you will feel it when you have done 3-5 studies ... thereafter, the wait becomes more and more unbearable; one other users reported 15 seconds for each markup.

I have email exchange with Logos, it is a known problem, so, I am trying to gather support in uservoice to hopefully move the priority higher in the list. This is useful for those of us who does more serious markup for our studies.

I felt like I have failed, after lobbying for the first time, .... only 26 votes :-(

Noticed Improve highlighting performance for serious users now ranked # 64 (out of 392) with 29 votes.

Looking at last 100 added suggestions => http://logos.uservoice.com/forums/42823-logos-bible-software-4/topics/43299-i-suggest-you-/filter/recent noticed 15 have 10 or more votes. Overall, 119 suggestions (about 30 %) have 10 or more votes. For first time lobby, appears suggestion has attracted voting support from other users. Some Logos User Voice suggestions are discussed on forum for awhile before creating suggestion (can improve wording and attraction for voting).

Looking forward to Logos 4.5 Beta 1 release in one to few weeks that includes sync framework changes with major changes how highlighting and notes are stored locally, then sync. Before installing Logos 4.5 Beta 1, plan to have a stable Logos 4.3 configuration for use (in case beta is a bit buggy).

I am ready and waiting for beta :-) I run 3 copies of Logos 4 on my Laptop

L4 for Mac - for day to day use
L4 for Windows on Parallels - insurance and when functions are not available on Mac
L4 for Window(beta) on Parallels - beta, it can crash, I just need to restore VM from my backup
