Logos 4 Backup Suggestion

I have seen on different forums that users have offered suggestions for Logos. I was wondering if it would be possible or if it is in the near future to create a type of self-extracting file of Logos 4 and our available library. Although this would be a fairly large file for most, an external hard drive would easily be sufficient to store it. I have in the recent past been in locations where the internet is slow or even non-existent so getting to the Logos installer files is impossible. If a person needs to re-format a hard drive (which does happen) then a person would need to wait. I know about making a back-up of the resource folder and transferring it but for some reason I had issues the last time I had to re-format. That could have (probably was) been my error, however. Just wondering. Thanks Logos.

To save on time or bandwidth download caps, I recommend at least saving the resource files and setup programs. An external drive is probably the cheapest method of doing this. I have considered using a laptop size SSD drive as an external drive but it is expensive and limited to your USB transfer rate. (Good with new USB 3.0, if you have it.) USB flash drives ("thumb drives") can also be used in a dedicated "Logos install kit." Even if a library gets very large (those Perseus resources are releasing soon) You can fit everything on a 64GB drive.The whole Libronix 3 collection is 32.5GB on their ftp server, and my large personal Logos 4 library is somewhere around 14GB. That leaves much room for future expansion.[:)]

Another good use of flash drives is to store training videos there instead of your three different computers. You can then watch the videos on any machine without dedicating duplicate storage space. The USB drives access faster than CD/DVD drives.

Consumer warning: Most high capacity low price USB drives being sold on eBay are frauds. They are 4GB drives hacked to present themselves as 64GB. The sellers have low ratings and are usually newly registered in foreign countries. Their positive feedbacks are from buyers who have not yet discovered they have been taken. When they try to recover their files, they will learn or their losses. If you want to be sure your Logos resources are really saved on the USB drive, buy only from reputable sellers. The current price for a real 64GB is about $59 and up. Those $24 ones are fakes.

Sorta falls under the old adage, "If it sounds too good to be true it usually is," doesn't it?

Flashdrives are a good way to go and with the cost of external hard drives well below $100, it only makes sense to have a multiple backups. I bought a 2 Terabyte external Seagate for $89.99 on sale at Staples. Granted it was only a USB 2 drive but for backup purposes it is more than enough and the interface is upgradeable when the time comes that I have USB 3 on my system.

One of the auto backup systems such as Crashplan can't be beat. I can back up to as many systems as I want as well as the Crashplan servers for only $12.00 a month. And it all happens in the background without a noticeable hit on performance. I have learned over the ytears that you cannot have too many backups. That is why I still have sermons and lessons from eight years ago and family digital photos from twelve years ago.

You are welcome to track any of them for 30 days.It is interesting to watch how much money they clear before getting booted.

Telltale signs are:

recently registered seller,
low feedback count seller,
foreign seller,
unreasonably low price,
short auction duration,
multiple listings of same item,
stock photos,
first few fraud victims get refunded for "defective" merchandise

Everything resides under the \Logos4 folder in a standard (non-custom) installation. Very easy to backup as SuperTramp has expressed.

I know about making a back-up of the resource folder and transferring it but for some reason I had issues the last time I had to re-format. That could have (probably was) been my error,

Dave, I know you prefer to image the drive for your backup/restore methodology. Why not share what application(s) you use for this purpose and the step by step methodology?

The system drive only - Logos4 is always installed on a separate partition because it is not crucial to recovery of the computer.

But I regularly perform a normal copy of the \Logos4 folder to a removable drive, and step by step recovery/re-installation is in the blue link in my previous post.

Great idea! Particularly as my notebook/tablet does not have a DVD drive!
