It Must Have Seemed Like a Good Idea at the Time...

In the good ol' days, some apparently thought it was more rational and simpler to express BCV citations by using Roman numerals for the chapter number, e.g. Matthew XVI 16, instead of Matthew 16:16. (Sort of like some modern financial software thinks it is better to express today's date as 4-Sep-2011, rather than 9/4/2011; a real productivity boon </sarcasm>).

However, the really good idea was from Logos, who programmed the PB compiler to recognize odd stuff like this.

Well, yyyy-mm-dd is standardized and will sort nicely even if only recognized as string or numbers. On the other hand, I've even come accross older IT applications that prefer yyyy-ddd or ddd-yyyy, with ddd just counted from Jan-1 regardless of the month. There used to be special calendars for the IT folks (and bankers) which showed these dates.

I don't often take issue with obvious typos but thought it worth pointing out that 4-Sep-2011 is really 4/9/2011 any other translitteration fails to confuse Americans (which is the prime objective of the 'English' speaking world).

Don't knock it - I'm west coast American and always write my dates as 4 Sept 2011 ... it has some logic .e. smallest unit to largest unit. There is no logic to the 9/4/2011 format at all ...[:P]

The ONE TRUE DATE FORMAT is 2011 09 04

If you do 4 sep 2011 and then do a TEXT sort then everything you ever did on the fourth day of the month is together. And your sort order is 1 10 11 [..] 29 3 31 [..] 7 8 9 by DAY of month

If you do 9/4/20 and then do a TEXT sort then everything you ever did in September is together

But if you do 2011 09 04 [add in the zeros] then all of your work is in order by DATE and thus the ONE TRUE DATE FORMAT if you want to sort your work by date done and have the items done just before or just after to be sorted nearby. [IMHO J]

[Also we need to drop the comma format of John 3:16,17 for John 3:16-17 so that we can copy and paste with out editing the ',' to '-']

Perhaps. But if someone asks me what today's date is, I will respond verbally, "September Fifth, Two Thousand Eleven." The direct notational analogy to that is 9/5/2011. (Hence "9/11" as an historical notation.)

My original aside came from experience in my previous life (15 years ago) as an Accounts Payable Manager. When you have 9 AP clerks with a zillion invoices to input and they have to roam across the keyboard every time they enter a date (instead of using only the numeric keypad), that is a productivity killer. I believe that financial software stores the date differently than how it is formatted on the screen (much like Excel), so the complaint is not really related to the ability to sort, etc., but with the unwieldy input format.

Back to the BCV issue, my failing memory now informs me that I have read a more modern (late 50s, J.I. Packer) book with the odd Roman numeral notation, so when John Owen (or his editor or his typesetter) used it, maybe it was less an issue of ancient notation and another one of those odd Eurocentric deals, like paper with weird sizes </amerocentricism) [;)]
