New International Dictionary of the Old Testament
I've not the Dictionary mentioned. Am wondering - just for curiosity sake - is the Euphrates mentioned in this set?

It doesn't have a main entry, but it is mentioned a couple times in the "River" entry. Here is one instance:
After the usage of specific rivers as a sign of blessing in creation, the next major theological usage is that of the Nile and the Euphrates, which are used as metaphors for their respective civilizations. This can be subdivided into three areas: (a) in historical crisis points a single river stands for a single nation with which Israel is in conflict (Isa 8:7–8; 11:15; 19:5–8; Ezek 31); (b) as such, these rivers often represent not just their respective nations but all pagan nations; and (c) both rivers mentioned together can be used for the two poles of the ANE, often understood as the whole world. An example of this third area, a key part of understanding the patriarchal borders promised to Abraham (Gen 15:18) is to focus not on the exact location but the metaphorical impact of the rivers: The descendents of Abraham would inherit land not just up to, but into the very heart of the two poles of the ANE, i.e., they will inherit the world.

Thanks for the reply Todd. I had meant to mention in my original question, that the Anchor Yale Dictionary doesn't have a specific mention of it. Never fails - let me do just one thing at a time and I'll get it mixed up - that's what I get for multitasking!?!
I'm surprised with these more expensive Dictionaries that something like the Euphrates is not mentioned. In your judgment, is it worth spending the money for the NIDOT (only 159.00) when one already has the AYD? I've been touch and go with buying it - I'll appreciate your thoughts on it if you will.

It is mentioned 433 times in AYBD according to the search. What this implies is that the editors of the AYBD believed that their readers would know of the Euphrates river and that they had no specifically Biblical information to add. Other editors make different assumptions regarding what their readers know.
Orthodox Bishop Alfeyev: "To be a theologian means to have experience of a personal encounter with God through prayer and worship."; Orthodox proverb: "We know where the Church is, we do not know where it is not."

Only 433 times, hey? This proves two things at least - I'm not aware yet of how to do a search in this particular Dictionary. I've got the word list going down the side of the AYBD and cannot find Euphrates of course. The other thing I did, was do a search (third button over to the right on the top of Logos) and still came up with nil.
The other thing it proves is - I need help to do something as simple as a search in this happy Dictionary. Could you please inform me how you did come up with Euphrates 433 times?
Again, the reply seems to be somewhat of a paradox - you're stating it is found this many times - then you say the editors really added nothing. Though I might be following you in what you're saying, maybe you can clarify. Thanks!!!

Its full name is New International Dictionary of Old Testament Theology & Exegesis (NIDOTTE). NIDOTTE and AYBD are completely different kinds of dictionaries. NIDOTTE is indexed by both Hebrew and English words and can be use as a Hebrew lexicon target in Logos. NIDOTTE has extended discussion of the Biblical usage and theological understanding of the words (thus the "Theology & Exegesis" portion of its name). AYBD can only be used to look up English words and doesn't discuss theology.

I'm saying one set of editors think its common knowledge among their readers and doesn't need an entry; the other set of editors don't think its common knowledge among their readers.
I've started a BUG report thread because of the difference in counts. It might be useful to Melissa if the three of us who ran the search would add the build we used to the thread.

It's not a bug. Y'all have different search options checked. Those getting 438 hits have 'match all word forms' checked, so you're finding hits on words like Euphratic. Those with 433 don't have that option checked. And if you were to check 'match case', you'd see that one author didn't capitalize the 'e' in Trans-euphrates, giving 432 hits.
