iPad /iTouch Filtering
I'm thinking about getting an iPAD or iTouch in the near future and I was wondering what sort of filtering everyone has tried and what they are sticking with (if I can be so bold as to end with a preposition)?
Blessings,
Charles

Sorry for the confusion - internet filtering (e.g. porn).

It is amazing to me this concern about porn.
Don't get me wrong - on principle I think it is a modern day evil.
However I spend a lot of time on the internet and it never seems to rear its ugly head. I reckon the best filter is ourselves - don't go looking for it!
I have lived in some troubled cities - any night of the week I could have taken you to a place where you would be sure to get yourself into a fight - I don't fight very well so I never went to those places. If by mischance I found myself in one I turned on my heels and left.
Internet porn my be ubiquitous but generally it doesn't come looking for you.
Email is of course a different subject you really do need filters for that.

I generally agree with you. I don't know what the concerns of the OP were, but let me give you some more insight from my perspective.
1) When I was a senior in college (1997-1998), there was a christian music group which sang folksy music about family life. I am quite eclectic in my music taste, so although I was not the target demographic (an older audience was), still I enjoyed their music when I discovered it. I decided to look them up. The first link I clicked on took me to hard core porn. I tried clicking it closed, but as quickly as I closed the window, a new one would pop up. It was nefarious that anyone would use the name of a husband and wife singing team - who sang about "family values" - to propagate porn, but they did.
2) Lets not kid ourselves - porn is marketed largely towards boys & men. As a youth pastor, it was not difficult to bump into porn by searching for sites geared towards adolescent & young adult men (such as sports & video game related sites). News sites can also be a problem. One site that I used to enjoy I stopped using completely because of porn. It was a conglomerate of news from many places around the world/web (it hyperlinked to news stories). 90% of the news articles were legitimate "news" articles. What caused me grief was when I opened an interesting news article and was forwarded to less than reputable sites, some of which included nude photos as advertisements.
3) Most importantly, I would not want my sons to fall into this trap. As I mentioned, porn is targeted to adolescent boys & young men. My boys are very young now, but if they were 10 and older, I would be very concerned about their safety on the web.
In my case, I do not have any filters on my computers. I have chosen to avoid to avoid some (legitimate) websites I enjoy to keep from polluting my mind. This is a good solution for me, but others may need more help, and I will almost certainly be looking for some kind of parental control feature when my boys get older.

If you use a router with your Internet connection, let me suggest OpenDNS. They have good filters at the router level.

OK. You have me intrigued. I took a look, but I am a little unsure. Have you used this? Is it easy to change the router settings? Does it block a wide range of sites, or pick-and-choose? Most importantly, will it effect netflix? [:)]

I've been using OpenDNS for years now. Their filters are quite good though not perfect (none are.)
It will block a wide range of sites and the free version gives you a small (25?) blacklist where you can list sites that are not yet blocked that manage to leak through.
And no, it does not negatively effect Netflix.
Sarcasm is my love language. Obviously I love you.

I signed up and set it up on my router. Do you have your settings on "Moderate" or "High"?
Mine is set to custom, with a number of categories chosen relative to the needs of my household.

We use Open DNS here at home and at church and it is a bit tight at times, so we have to put in exceptions, but that is not an issue. further there is no password that would allow you by-pass the filter, instead, you have to change the settings... and they take a few minutes to take effect. Thus, it is not something that if someone "found" the pass word, that they could get around the blockage unless they opened up the entire system to every one and that makes it much easier to see when something is not right.

And Open DNS is free if I am not mistaken!

As others have said it works great. I have never tried to find a site that was blocked, meaning it has never over filtered sites for me. I had my wife test it after setting things up and it did block some of the obvious offenders - well known porn sites she typed in.

Kevin, I have a website that is a photo site, and it blocked my site... There is nothing on it that would even resemble porn, but it was blocked... it will also block flickr and some other sites of that nature as well, so I set up exceptions for it and now all is well! http://www.nikonkelly.com is my site, try it and I think that unless you have minimal settings, it will block it!

As others have suggested, OpenDNS is a great option. However, it can only filter the network (home, church or school) and not 3G or another WiFi network (like at a neighbour's or a coffee shop). In addition to OpenDNS, you may want to consider installing a safe browser app (like Mobicip) on the iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad. We have been using it at our home for a while and are generally happy with it. Check out these tutorials for more info:
