PBB Issues...

Hello,
I just recently decided to transfer all of my personal note files over to PBB. Some are Pdfs others are .doc, and so on. I do not own Microsoft Word, was never that interested in the Office suites. But it seems unless I have an Updated Office Product that I am unable to use this tool. I have tried to "convert" a file or two using an external program, and evern thoough the format is changed, any graphs, tables, or charts are completely misinterpreted / misplaced by PBB. Are there any currently advised solutions to these problems?
Thanks!

Never tried it and don't know if it will work but you cand google something like convert to docx and some sites claim to do it, e.g. http://docx-converter.com/

Have you tried LibreOffice? Its a free Office Suite (Open Source) that will read / save pretty much any file format. I've long ditched Microsoft because its 1. bloated and 2. expensive. I actually write my papers for Grad school in Google Docs! Allows my wife easy access to fix <cough> I mean, review my grammar errors...

Hello Friends,
Would you happen to have any Suggestions for Pdf conversion?

It depends on the PDF. I'm learning how to use a program called Calibre (excellent program) for managing my Kindle Ebooks. It will convert a PDF to RTF, which could then be opened in Word and saved as a .docx. However the PDFs I've tried converting didn't work out so well.

Adobe Acrobat Pro.

My frugal and quick way to get from PDF to Word is this:
- I use the free MobiPocket Creator to import the PDF. MobiPocket can create .prc files for Kindle, but for this use I import only, then I'm done with MobiPocket
- One of the intermediate steps MobiPocket does is create an HTML of the PDF contents. i go to the folder where this is, which on my Win 7 computer is My Documents\My Publications\name of PDF.
- The HTML file is there with the same name as the PDF.
- I open the HTML file in a browser, do Ctrl+A to select all and Ctrl+C to copy.
- I paste it into Word.
In many cases, the formatting is such that the TOC heading styles are already in place. Also, BCV citations are typically in some unique font-attribute combination, which can facilitate using Find and Replace to make Milestones. I don't do any academic or professional work with Logos (just a plain ol' Christian reading), so I don't sweat the page numbers or other things required for academic citation.
I've tried some of the free PDF converters, but my experience with them is that they turn all lines into paragraphs, which I think will hose the whole thing. I've also tried Calibre with mixed results; i think my bad results from Calibre are from a lack of experience using it and tweaking the process.
BTW Adobe Pro is great; I use it at work, can't afford it at home.

Actually, I got mine while I was in seminary. I also took VCAR classes with an emphasis in Typography/Publication Design. I purchased CS5 with an educational discount. [;)]

Acrobat Pro does not work well for me for converting a PDF back to Word. I use version X and is still quirky. Yes, you get a .docx file and it opens in Word, but I have to re-format every line. Sometimes the leading is off; sometimes, the kerning is off; most times, it never recognizes bulletted lists or headings. And, it really hoses a pdf that has headers and footers... Oh, yes, and graphics...
You could compile what it gives you. But, it would look bad in Logos, very bad. At least it has for me.

Do you have a better suggestion? I am not saying that you will come out with a perfect .docx file, but I am saying that it is better than the other options.

You are probably right. I have tried many things. I tried copying the text from a page of the pdf and pasting into OneNote and allowing its OCR engine to work. That works better in an lot of cases better that Acrobat Pro. But, it is tedious.
I have tried opening in Adobe InCopy. It turns everything to text. You still have to go an reformat headings, etc. But, it gets rid of the junk that is in the converted docx file.
I am just saying that pdf is a horrible format to convert back to Word- that I don't think there is a magic way; that it is going to take patient work if you have to start with a pdf.

No disagreement here. My experience has been better than yours, however. Perhaps you have a sample .pdf you would want us to take a look at?

I only have permission from the author (former Bible College professor) to use in my own copy of Logos.

Greetings,
I have also tried Adobe per the latest suggestion, and I too have had poor results. Would it be possible to have "two" of the most popular file formats (.docx, & .PDF) as a possibility, for PBB?
Thanks.

Does Microsoft Word open PDF's? Or contain Hebrew / Greek fonts for proper conversion?

I am not a programer. Perhaps someone can fill in the gaps... this isn't really possible or even desirable. A PDF is kind of like a photograph. It is designed so that no matter what computer you open it up on, it will look the same. eBooks are different in that the formatting is less particular. You are not designing the text to fit on a specific sized paper (or screen), but rather for the text to be flowable. One of the reasons there is difficulty in converting the .pdf into .docx is because there is quite a bit of information that Word does not need. Those are the sort of difficulties that you are having when you try to convert. If a Logos developer wants to chime in and correct me, I'd gladly eat my humble pie, but it is my understanding that you will NEVER see a pdf PBB simply because the file format would be incompatible and ill-suited for the creation of personal books.
If Logos was going to create a PBB using the most popular file format, it would have been the .doc. It is my understanding, however, that Logos is using certain features of the .docx file format to create the PB's. These are features which other file formats may or may not have.

PDF's aren't meant to be "opened" by any program. They are meant to be "viewed." Word opens many file types which are read/write. PDF's are designed to be "read" only.

Alabama,
Yes, I understand all of which you speak. Most of the Documents I would like to add are in PDF. I am not a programmer either, but I sure would like the ability to add them or properly convert them for addition.

Conversion potential depends on PDF content since PDF can be formatted text and/or images. Several PDF readers (and LibreOffice PDF import) can extract text from PDF, converting images is more challenging (needs optical character recognition, followed by human clean-up of spelling errors). Aware of many PDF converters (web sites and programs), but not have any recommendation.

http://www.libreoffice.org/download has download links.
File => Open default is all files (includes PDF).
Caveat: if PDF Import opens file in LibreOffice Draw, can copy and paste images. Depends on PDF content, may have option to copy text one sentence at a time:

Oh, ok. Yes, I have tried that also, and it never seems to import all of the pages
I thought you were referring to another 1-click option I had missed
I did happen to find a Converter that seems to work Perfectly called Nitro PDF Professional. Although if converting hebrew or greek, I must have the correct fonts for the "Word" program I am going to use to read it or it translates using Capitol, lowercase, and symboled letters
?
Would you happen to know where I can get a good set of Variety Greek and Hebrew fonts? Preferably free..
Blessings, and Many Thanks!

Logos has Unicode, Fonts, and Keyboard page => http://www.logos.com/support/lbs/fonts
Biblical studies page has some font links => http://biblical-studies.ca/biblical-fonts.html (some names mentioned on Logos page)
