Something to think about concerning the giveaways and contests

Whenever I receive a "giveaway" or an opportunity to "win" something for free, I get excited..or at least I used to. Not so much anymore because it seems like Logos has sold their soul to facebook just like everyone else, (not that I blame them) but what about people like me that don't have and don't want a facebook or twitter account? We're cheated of the chances others have simply because they have active accounts on those sites. That to me seems very unfair and I just wanted to point out to anyone that might listen that there really are people that don't have and don't want facebook and/or twitter accounts. I don't mean to imply that Logos is alone in doing this, the whole world seems to have gone facebook crazy so why shouldn't they? I don't have a problem with them utilizing facebook themselves, I just have a problem with being penalized because I choose not to. Just something to think about. thanks for listening...

Definitely agree.

The way I view it is similar to our Walmart.

Oftentimes, if you park there and have a red car, they give you a 50% discount off.

Sometimes, it's a blue car and only 30% off.

It makes people mad (the ones who don't drive red or blue cars that is).

But for goodness sakes ... Walmart's a business!!

Obvious solution: buy a red car!!! Hello.

Of course Walmart doesn't actually do that; they can't afford to anger their customers.

I don't think it's unfair. To the extent Facebook and Twitter sales promotions make Logos money they wouldn't otherwise probably be getting,
everyone - including
non-Facebook and non-Twitter Logos users - benefits from lower prices or more staff hires => faster production re: everything else,

Open a Facebook account (free), keep it private, post only minimal required info in your account/profile, don't friend anybody, and only "Like" the Logos page.

Open a Twitter account (free) and only follow Logos and set it to so Logos tweets your mobile phone.

Facebook and Twitter only interfere with your life or invade your privacy to the extent you let them.

I don't understand why you think Logos "sold their soul"? It is called marketing... They are giving a away something as a means to an end.

They are trying to get as many people directed towards a media that is dynamic. This way they get more face-time time with customers and potential customers, so the can sell their goods.

If you want to participate get a Facebook and Twitter account.

I have a love/hate relationship with Facebook. If there was a GOOD alternative, I would break ranks immediately.
you can always sign up for an account and not use it except for these sort of things.
As others have mentioned, Logos does this to get publicity. It is advertising.

It is no different than rules other contests have: i.e. "must be present to win."

The supermarket where I shop has their sales posted on their web page and send out a flyer with the same information. I suppose the supermarket has sold its soul to the internet and the post office. Since only those with an address receive the flyer in the mail, I suppose they've sold their soul to those with permanent addresses as well since homeless people wouldn't receive the flyer.

Some customers find it discriminatory. Perhaps he has sold his soul, too. (Er, well, I guess he did in a way. God paid a price for it: the death of his Son.) But if he's within his rights to offer such a discount only to certain people who are willing to play the game of his choosing, then surely Logos is too. It's not a penalty for some customers in the case of the oil change, it's merely a special bonus for those who are biblically literate. It does betray a worldview of the owner which he hopes many others will share with him. So yes, Logos's special offer for users of social media betrays a viewpoint that social media is the wave of the future and is important to be engaged with, and they hope to win others to that viewpoint. People still have the freedom to disagree and opt out, just as people have the right to get their oil changed and refuse to quote Scripture. But they aren't part of the "in" group, so to speak. And yes, there are often costs associated with not going along with the crowd, though hopefully the choice to stay off Facebook and Twitter will never be taken away from us. One can always be, as Neil Postman calls it, a "loving resistance fighter" in the face of technological developments we aren't happy with. Jacques Ellul is more pessimistic (too pessimistic in my view): he says our only options are to adapt to technological change or end in neurosis.

I love this... John 3: 16 is the most powerful verse in the Bible. It is the Gospel Story and it brings LIFE.

These threads have been occurring since Logos started doing such promotions via Facebook and Twitter. Here's my take on it, for what it's worth...

I am no technophobe. I embrace new technology willingly, after evaluating its usefulness versus its potential down sides. And I will say that I am an absolute Facebook/Twitter despiser. I hate what these social trends represent. I hate the ramifications and potential dangers. I will never sign up for a Facebook or Twitter account. I accept that there are certain so called "benefits" that I will not receive due to my lack of participation. Some of these are indeed unfortunate... others, upon reflection, not so much so. But I accept that as the "price" I pay for my commitment to that stance.

All of that said, I don't fault Logos and don't feel that it is fair to claim that it is "unfair". Any business has the right to expand. To do so, it has the right to market its products and services to certain segments of the population to increase its market share. The business does so for its own ends, presumably, after studying the benefits that such a marketing approach will have towards its business. But every one of us accepts this in other ways without question. A flyer is placed on your car window, offering a coupon for a discount on a pizza. WHAT? Blatantly unfair to those who don't have a car! An ad placed in the Wall Street Journal? Unfair to those who don't subscribe to that newspaper! A radio announcement on a Country Western station? Gross unfairness to those who have the good taste or moral convictions not to listen to such *ahem* music! (THAT last being said very much tongue in cheek!!)

Why do we accept these as perfectly legitimate... and not in the least unfair? When does the "fairness" issue start to become tyranny? YOU, Mr. Businessman, may not market your products and services on any venue that I personally don't approve of, or in which I choose volitionally not to participate. Who is being "unfair" here? If Logos were to choose to market on aforesaid country music station, does that mean they are unfair? No. Does it mean they are unfairly forcing me to listen to country music rather than classical? Of course not. They are trying to reach a certain segment of the population. They are free to offer enticements to country music lovers on a venue that will be productive in reaching them, and enticements (even different ones) on a classical music station to draw in that particular crowd. And if some day, Logos chooses to advertise in Playboy, well, I suppose they have that "right". It may be (and hopefully would be) business suicide... and I for one would discontinue my support of their business... but "unfair" doesn't seem to be an appropriate label.

And here's the thing... if you would like to enjoy the discount, you don't HAVE to sign up for twitter or Facebook. Just as if you happened to find a coupon that blew off a car windshield, blowing across the WalMArt parking lot... THEY'LL HONOR THE COUPON... EVEN IF YOU DON'T HAVE A CAR. I don't have a twitter account. But these forums have given links to the feeds. You can find out what was offered twitter users... and you too, friends, can get the discount... even without a twitter account. Sorta sounds fair to me... I'm not sure what we are expecting them to do... and why we should be holding them to such a distorted view of fairness that we do not expect from any other business, and which we all take advantage of in various forms at one time or another.

I purchased one such discounted offering. I'm glad I did. By and large, I find the offerings rather over rated... and I either have them, wouldn't have any interest in them, can get them for less (or free) elsewhere... or whatever... but that is just ME. Others may find the offerings immensely useful, depending on their collections/interests. But it seems "very unfair" to be calling Logos "very unfair". They have, it seems to me, to have displayed a degree of fairness far beyond the norm.

Anyway... that's my two cents... (okay, my dime... its a long post). And please do not misconstrue my post to be directed at anyone in particular. They are just cumulative thoughts in general on the issue after reading many threads. I say, let Logos market wherever and however they want that is legal and moral, and let us be a s gracious as they have been... a strengthened Logos with a wider customer base... even of country music fans... benefits us all. ;-)
