How to search a verse as a topic

I would like to do a topical search, but my topic is Romans 6:19. I'm not sure L4 can do this like Libronix, but I'm asking for every article that has Romans 6:19 in the title (which is what I understood a topical search to be with Libronix).

Hi Paul,

You might try guessing at the topic relative to words used in the verse

My library is small compared to many on the forum, but if you get too many hits you could try changing Entire Library to a collection which excluded Bibles/Dictionaries/Commentaries.

Thanks, guys. But your results do not find titles with "romans 6:19" in them. However, I did notice that a basic search allows me to choose Search>Title (and other options), but only for entire library. If I try to limit it to my theological journals, the "Title" option is eliminated.

So I searched the entire library for "3:16" by title and got this result:

One article, and not even John 3:16, and not in the Title--with the Gold Collection. Seems odd.

I'm going to see what I come up with using Libronix with the topic search and syntax options there.

The problem then is, that what you call a "title", is coded otherwise in the Logos index. It could be e.g. "Heading Text" or "Large Text", as you can see in the info panel of your journal. I randomly opened two in my library

FWIW, I searched for 3:16 in these suspects my small library: 103 hits (not always good ones)

That does help, Mick. Thanks. I tried it before, but only using Topic & Title, and that didn't do much. Also, I don't have "Heading Title" in my search options. That might be because I got the L4 engine only, not a crossgrade/upgrade, etc.

On another note, this is interesting. Both the below searches were done on my Theological Journal Library Collection, but with different results:

This was the goal being my Reading Outlines. I did create one for Romans, but can't remember if I finished it or not.

the problem, as you are probably aware, is that references are often not tagged as references in headings. Thus, Romans 6:19 will not find Rom 6:19 or Rom 6:18-20. I did a search in the journals for the various forms of Romans (e.g. Rom., Rom, Etc) and then sorted them out by their particular verses. If you open the Reading List Tools and search for "Romans Reading Outline" you will see what I have done so far. There is nothing I found for Rom. 6:19. But I think my Romans list needs some work anyway.

For finding a specific verse This seemed to work. It will not find the 6:18-20, obviously. It works for finding 6:17 in the Journals but doesn't find anything for 6:19. you could do a chapter search by using "Within 1 word 6".

Actually in my library the results are the same for both searches and it will also find Rm. 6:19 being part of a larger section of Rm. 6 dealt with in the paragraph:

However, the results are not very reliable, as I expect not only the TNTC and Teaching Romans (that's the TB Ro1 resource) to discuss this verse. I have'nt many theological Journals to search for, thus those have no hits. But in theory searching for scripture as a topic or part of a (sub-)title should work, see:

Your search Romans 6:19 is recognised as looking for a tagged reference e.g. [[Bible:Ro 6:19]] in PB syntax! The formal datatype Search syntax is <Bible ~ Romans 6:19>, but Romans 6:19 is recognised as being the same. If you search for Romans BEFORE "6:19" then it becomes a normal text search - it won't find tagged references unless the label (surface text) is a match.

Very interesting. Yes, both formats yield the same results, actually making this type of search easier. Another plus for L4.

I was looking for the same fucntion. What I use when I want this type of search is not a search at all. I right click the reference and make sure that reference is clicked. I then select "Power Lookup" The power look up window will populate with every bible with that verse, but once you scroll down past the bible verses every location that the reference is the title of the article will be listed. evey book commentary and article with the reference as the title will be listed.

Check it out and see if this is what you are looking for.

I tried that. Exactly how do you do that? When I right-click on the verse number (in the NASB), nothing happens. I'm wondering if this is another missing feature of the engine only upgrade.

Never mind. I figured it out. However, all I got were the commentaries after the translations. I hate to say it, but I think the only way is to just type in the verse in a basic search for the entire library (which can be too overwhelming-709 results for Rom. 6:19 in Gold) or create good collections to search. Maybe this is the key to searching in L4--taking the considerable time creating your own collections. I guess it would pay off in the end.
