"Preparing your Library-This may take FOREVER?"

When I opened Logos yesterday it toldme it was downloading updates, so I left it to run overnight, which it did. This morning it was "Preparing my Library-this may take a while". It is 12 hours later, and it is still preparing. I have paused it,but was unable to open the program or even get the status box to go away without hitting the x in the upper right corner, which completely closes the program.

When I reopened the program, I got the "preparing" message again. I paused it again, then closed the status boxand program, then rebooted my computer, and have the same results.

computer is Asus Slate running Windows 7 64 bit. Never had a problem with Logos 4 on this machine in the past.

Any suggestions?

Wonder about permanently enabling Diagnostic Logging then reboot computer, then can look at Logos4Indexer.log file to see what is happening.

Note: "permanent" logging can be turned off later.

Also wonder if Perseus resources recently downloaded ? (yet 12 hours for indexing seems bit long)

Indexing is a huge task. It is CPU dependent, and certainly can take most of a day on a slower processor (netbooks, tablets, older computers). For comparision, it took just over 2 hours to index my entire library when I updated to a quad-core i7 laptop. It's worth the wait: searches are quick and powerful once indexing is complete.

Perhaps it should say, "Preparing your library for now: we suggest you prepare for eternity." [;)]

I wouldn't consider a dual-core i5 with 4gig of RAM a slower processor; indexing has never taken this long before, not even on my wife's 5 year old laptop. I understand the purpose of indexing; it's just not working right. For the record, we're well over 24 hours now, and still not complete.

I'll give the diagnostic logging idea a try.

It is hung up trying to replace your index. I don't know why it is having this problem, but one thing you could try is to restart Logos 4 then kill the indexer using Task Manager (Processes). That might at least allow you to get into Logos. At that point I'd use the Rebuild Index command in the Command Bar to see if forcing Logos to dump my old index and rebuild a new one would get around the problem. Keep us posted.

Killing the indexer in Task Manager got me into the program, thanks! As far as the "Rebuild Index" command, I typed it into the command bar, and hit "enter", but it doesn't appear to have done anything?

Yes. I killed indexing in the task manager, ensured that it was gone, and that the "hidden icon" in my system tray that shows Logos is indexing was gone. I then ran "rebuild index" again, and both the hidden icon and the process in task manager have re-appeared, so it seems to be rebuilding the index.

I guess my only question now is whether or not it's possible to see some sort of progress indicator, and if it's possible to force a log like I did earlier this morning, so I can see if it's "stuck" again?

Thanks for the help thus far; I'm hoping that it'll finish indexing before I have to go home tonight--I have a major assignment due tomorrow night that I'm already behind on![:O]

Close and restart. That will trigger the Preparing your library then indexing. The logs can tell us how things are going.

If you hover over the icon in the system tray, it should give you a percent complete.

It still cannot replace the catalog index, which suggests another process is interfering; probably your Security Suite. Block it, or any similar program, from accessing the \Logos4 folder and re-run Logos4. If that does not work it would be time to contact Logos Technical Support, who can directly work on your computer.

The bulk of my email was, in fact, a link to this thread. I figure it would say everything better than I could repeat it, and not gum up the mail server with attachments.

Update: I got a reply from tech support the next morning.
Unfortunately, when I went to delete some of the files he suggested, I
discovered some issues in my drive permissions, and some how created a
bigger problem (not logos related). So, the Logos fix is on hold while
we address some issues ("My Documents" disappeared, even though the file
space still shows as occupied).

FWIW, the "rebuild index" command doesn't replace the catalog index, per tech support.
