Precept Marking Bible with Highlights

Is anyone having problems using Highlighters and markings? Last week I experienced my marking taking forever to complete (when you count up to 1000 - 13) Now my Logos is
shutting down when I am trying to break the palette up into smaller ones. I had one palette that had 100 styles in it.

If it doesn't repeat, what affect has it on splitting the Palette?

Many highlights in a resource can slow things down. So the cure is rather obvious if not welcome! However, there is a hidden relationship between this and Palettes/Styles, so let's try to sort the Palette issue first.

Thank you for your information. Before you responded yesterday, I opened Logos and it started working ok. However, this morning I opened Highlights in a new worksheet and started deleting the styles I didn't want on the new Palette for Ezekiel, that did ok until I open my Bible to check on something and then any command would freeze up the whole program even doing word searches.

I will get you that log as soon as possible.Thank you.

I started
the log. It did fine with just the
highlights open and for me to delete the unwanted styles for my new Ezekiel
palette, which I made by coping the original “Precept Inductive Whole Bible )
palette. Problems stated when I add my
NASB bible to my workspace . I eased a marking which it did ok. However,
when I started marking the chapter, the
problem started. It took up to counting
from 1001 to 1013 to finish the marking.

I, also did
several markings, new style, new palettes.
I even brought up another bible and everything seemed fine until I went
back and started marking my NASB bible. The
problem seems to be around my NASB.

The logs don't help in so far as they only show what you have described, which is symptomatic of heavy marking in a resource. And the situation doesn't appear to be improved so far with v4.5 Beta 2! All your Highlighting will be migrated as Annotations and be placed in various Note files according to Palette. The only way to minimise the problem is to reduce the amount of highlighting in the NASB and have smaller Palettes, as you have already begun to do.

Since I am going to do a palette for each book, would it help if I use the visual filter to turn off all palettes except the one that I am using? The are 66 Books of the Bible and right now I have only marked 3 books along with a few misc markings in other books.

If the resources are in your Layout (ostensibly open) then turning off palettes will help with memory and other system resources, irrespective of the palette(s) they use. Turn off Notes if they are extensive.

I have turned off all palettes but the one I am using and I have had all my notes turned off. It did pretty good till I edited one of the styles and then the problem came back.

Dave, I just don't know. I am only a lay person who wants to use highlights in a Precept course. What does a pastor or a professor do?

LimJK gave you that thread, and I'm pleased to tell you that the next major update promises to improve performance:-

Notes/Highlighting

Performance improvements have been implemented for adding a note and applying highlights.

This change has just been introduced at the beta test stage and you can track how others feel it has improved if you view the PC Beta Forum.

NOTE: I don't recommend you join the beta program unless you have two working systems and can dedicate one to the beta.

For those of us reading this forum can you provide recommendations on how to avoid this problem from the beginning? I was planning to try some heavy markup techniques. I would prefer to use my favorite Bible, but maybe not if it impairs it for other use. Is there a way to maintain multiple versions with one marked up and another not marked up?

Are there general rules of thumb on how much markup is tolerated with minimal performance penalty? I realize that this is likely to be highly machine dependent. I could easily mark up my Bible on my desktop only to find out that it won't work well on my laptop anymore. That would be distressing.

I noticed this problem on my iPad when I was highlighting a Tozer book. Every operation on the book, including just turning pages, got really slooooooow when I was 2/3s done. It kept me from completing the project.

Anecdotally, working backwards from what makes it worse, you would be best using markup styles that do not change the font size in any way (including bold, italic, etc.), avoid adding icons/markers before/after the text, and limit the number of markup styles and the number of markup palettes open at any given time. Since highlights (and notes) are layers, and you don't directly rewrite the resource, Logos needs to apply the layer to the text each time either the layer or the text is opened, and each time a layer is changed. This is what slows it down. The slow down is felt most when the text itself also has to be shifted to accommodate text size/spacing changes.

As highlighting will become integrated with notes in version 4.5, it will also help to start from the front of a book and work toward the end, as each new entry in the middle of a lengthy note file 'pushes' the others down, and this takes time too. Some have one note file per Bible book (for extensive note taking), to help mitigate this issue. In 4.5 you could have one file for both notes and highlights (which will be, essentially, a note without any text), or you could have one of each.
