Using Perseus Collection for word study

Excellent question. You can make a collection of the English translations and do a basic search for a given word, but all that tells you is how an unknown Greek word was translated. You can do a right click on the lemma and get a list of the Greek texts in a Bible word study as you described. Then you can choose one and click on it to open it. If it has an English translation associated with it, you can right click on the Greek word you are studying and it will give you the option to open the English translation of that text. However if you don't know Greek, you have to guess that you are looking at the correct English translation of a given Greek word by looking at the Greek and English text side by side. Even if you do make the right association this process is slow and there isn't sympathetic highlighting available. Perhaps someone with more knowledge will pick up this discussion and lead us in the right direction. (Hopefully if it's George he will be gentle with us;-)

Perhaps I am not holding my mouth right or I am missing something. Perhaps you can explain how you get that result. I get Greek when I hover over Greek. The screenshot shows the original Word Study (lower left) which I started by right clicking on dragon in Rev. 12. The search is above it and I am hovering over the Greek word and the Greek text in the lower right and the English translation (rendered serpent) is in the upper right. What should I be doing differently?

I used this method, since my Greek's a bit rusty

Once you've run the Classics search

open the Classic work up
click on the parallel resources button
if an English translation is available it will be one of the options

I did this, and didn't need to create a collection. I'm using a Mac, but I don't think this would be different.

I haven't tested this, but I thought Logos would remember the last search and bring the next search up the same way. i.e. if you used "aligned" last time, it will come up "aligned" the next time.

(BTW I plan on hiding all the resources that do not have an English translation

Or you can simply click on the Greek word in the text and, assuming you have lexica such as LSJ and BDAG you can the read through the entry to see the different ways in which the word is used. For the Perseus sources LSJ would usually be best.

When I open the resource from the search results and right click on the greek word I do not have any option to open the English text (and I did check to see if there was an English translation and there was but no option was found to open this resource in a right click) Could you please explain this a little more?

Here's a screen shot. I did a Bible Word Study on a Greek word in the NT, then clicked on the Classics part of the Textual Searches part of that study. That ran a search on the Classics and I picked one resource I knew had an English translation. I opened that by left clicking on the resource name in the search results, then right clicked on the highlighted Greek word. By selecting the Reference tab, Logos locates all the resources with that reference, which includes the English version (there happen to be two of them for this resource).

I see how it works now. So since there is no sympathetic highlighting we have to manually find the English word that is the translation of the Greek word. I took a year of NT Greek but am really rusty. Is there any chance that Logos might add sympathetic highlighting to these Classics???

Maybe if we ask really nicely, but I wouldn't count on it. Logos would have to code all the English translations with the correct Greek and Latin words they translate (sort of like they did to create the Reverse Interlinears), a massive task, and they aren't being paid for the work. It is limiting for those who aren't trained in or up to date on their Greek and Latin.

Mark, you are very gracious. I made a collection of the Perseus Greek texts which have an English translation and the English translation itself and excluded any others (one at a time) and included only those from the 1st-2nd century. Now I can search those works using the method Denise mentioned earlier in this thread. Although I have BDAG, I am still left with the conclusion that to make full use of the Classics I will need to purchase LSJ (as George suggested), (and keep some grammars handy). OK Logos how about a sale on LSJ at some point through the holiday season.

If you intend to do such a search on a regular basis, the best way I can think of is to form a collection using one of the lists of resources arranged by date then search that collection. Initially it would require some extra work, but that would be recouped over time.

I've checked some of mine and noticed that the parallel resources button doesn't show up until I scroll down to get past the title page information. (This is also at the spot where information starts appearing in the resource's reference box.) Give it a try if you haven't.
