iPad logos book updates and losing space

I wish Logos would let us do our own resource selection and downloads on all of the platforms. For my netbook, I would only want a small subset of the full library I have. And for my iPad, I'd rather drop files from my PC into iTunes or something, as I already have the downloaded files.

The iOS app would still only display those for which I held valid licenses, so no NIV or titles I don't own if I was able to get the files from someone else. I.E. the app would only show me what I'm allowed.

In 12 mths, I've had to download my library many times, wasting bandwidth, time and someone is paying for all that traffic at the server end ... let me think about who ... oh yes, me and the other users.

Please Logos: How many times must we keep asking? Let use have selective downloads of resources.

(Its fine if the engine controls its own parts, but book resource files are different, right?)

I am not a programmer, and I don't know what would be technically necessary for this to happen. I am not opposed to your suggestion (although I would not use it... I would always want all of my books - I do want better library sorting features, however), but I would be concerned that this would be confusing for many users. I can only imagine how many posts we would have & calls logos would get: "Where are my books!"

Actually, several apps allow similar things. The Kindle App allows you to add books you have that are not bought through the Kindle store through iTunes. You just got to your device's Apps tab and scroll down to "File Sharing". I currently have 5 different apps that allow loading of external files through iTunes.

If only Logos would allow for this, the hassle of re-downloading due to iOS update issues. These files restore without user assistance (had all my non-Kindle Store books restore on my iPod after updating it to iOS 5).

You just got to your device's Apps tab and scroll down to "File Sharing".

Eric - I believe you, but I have never seen this. Below is a screen shot of my iTunes account with my iPad connected. I don't see anything like what you are describing. Care to share a screen shot?

Nevermind... I was able to find a screen shot from Apple's website (screen shot below). Out of curiosity, what are the other programs that do this? I read that Kindle does NOT allow other .epub files. What files have you added?

I've added epub files I have download from monergism.com for free and also I think goner too to my kindle on iPod Touch...just go my iPhone so have added these there yet.  I also think the pdf reader I use allows you to add files via iTunes (and also over wi-fi), and Virtual BookShelf which I have purchased some accounting related texts from allows me to add books from the desktop app to the mobile device via this mehtod - they all simply use an add file button....would be nice if we could do this for Logos and Vyrso Mobile apps.

well, my 64 GB iPad has over 100 apps installed. Most just to see what some of them do ... Anyay, many of them that work with documents, files, audio or video etc allow me to drop files there in iTunes. Some even let me connect to FTP or Samba file shares. Some offer up servers so my PC can directly add or removes files from the "directory" that the app uses.

If Logos wished, the iOS app could directly connect to a network socket shared by the mac or PC full Logos 4, and sync resource files, or even notes and highlighting. Its just a matter of wanting to do so. Again, I have other Apps that do this kind of thing.

Imagine picking from a menu to please sync all resources tagged "Easter" to your iPhone or Android, without needing to go via the Cloud. Its just a matter of Logos wanting to support it and write the code. Maybe even all those in some named Collection.

Its for me to dream what I think would make the Logos app better. It really sucks attempting to transfer hundreds of titles one at a time from the Cloud.

And of course, lets not forget whatever the original poster reported about space usage ...

I've just re-confirmed this problem over the weekend.

I've noted my storage space left on my iPad and deleted the complete logos app.

Downloaded the app again with all the offline resources that I had. I've regained quite some storage space after doing this process.

So I think the resource updates are not clearing the old ones.

Until this bug gets fixed, I don't think I will be doing anymore resource updates.

I'm still wondering why the iPad version requires so many resource updates in comparison to the desktop version.

Alabama, I was just cringing, as I read your comments. I clearly remember the introduction of the Mac with its BW screen (after an Apple III???). I promised myself an Apple would never again see the light of day in my future.

But after Steve's Next debacle, I decided to compromise (allowing a reasonable number of years to pass).  I've only had my iPod a few weeks and it's been sharing files right and left (through iTunes).

It's clear to me, this is just one more example that the last days are upon us. Or you were just funning us.

I understand that some apps allow data to be shared via a wired connection, but that is clearly not Apple's desired behavior.

1. Most apps function via the cloud.
2. Apple is very strict about apps sharing data, and are "sandboxed." This is why the "Vyrso" app can't see that you have downloaded books to your Logos "Bible!" app. That is unfortunate, but Apple's "closed" platform keeps things more private and prevents most of the kinds of viruses which are available on more "open" platforms.

Super apologies!  Though up to iOS7 (ie days for me) you could move files around iOS6 with PC software (my synths; I presume illegally).

My Bible app was taking up 11.7GB in "Documents and Data". After I deleted and reinstalled it and allowed the "marked for download" resources to download it was only taking up 3.5GB.

This 8GB difference is significant!

@Logos - any thoughts or insights on what is happening here? Any way to address this issue?

That is unexpected. There could be data that hasn't finished syncing since you reinstalled, but I doubt it's 8GB worth. The app downloads bits of resources as they are accessed. This data is stored in a cache area that the OS is supposed to clear at as necessary. We'll have to add some diagnostics to figure out how the space is being used.

That is really strange... Unless the resources are actually that large to begin with. Most are much smaller.
