While its not a "rush out to get" product I am going to be in the market for a phone soon so naturally I am thinking about Android or Apple. As far as Logos is concerned the only thing I can see as an advantage is the faster chip. does anyone know if this will speed things up? It would be pretty cool if the Siri looked up Bible verses in the Logos app :-)

I am an apple fan, I own an iPhone 3GS, but i have used a Sony Android phone, my spouse had one for 6 months and hated it (would not sync properly to Windows 7), I thought it was ok.. loved the large screen. I do want a phone with 64 GB in it but I will not be looking at a 4S personally because i want a larger screen. I hope iPhone 5 has one.

iPhones are less user customizable, have more apps and are more secure. Androids are cheaper, more customizable but are more vulnerable to virus and malware. In the end you should get the phone that is right for you. Logos on both phones should be very similar, I have heard iOS might be a little more speedy but then it is a finished product not a beta like Android. I think most newer handsets on android will run Logos, and I believe logos wants to support as many handsets as possible, but twitter for example took 215 different versions variations to get it running on the then 300 and some handsets. So before you purchase you android phone check to make sure the APPs you want to run are compatible with it. Android also gives you many choices as to what brand you would like to buy. My spouse is very happy with the Windows Phone 7, but I realize that is not an option for you since Logos is a primary reason.  I am not sure I have been overly helpful but hope i raised some questions you might want to ask if you do decide to go Android.

Having had both I would choose android, the main reason being you can add your pdf's, word documents etc, and non logos resources easily.

if you want a more polished app, then its apple, and personally untill Logos sort out the notes/syncing then Ol**tree wins hands down, that said the android beta is coming along nicely, but would anticipate 3-6 months  before anywhere close to parity

I read PDFs in Bluefire… and word documents i use FIleApp, although file app and iBooks both read PDF files.  The one major advantage of Android is getting programs from anywhere, although even a few of the android market place have malware built into it. Happy Phone shopping.

You can do the same on the iPhone. What are you talking about?

dont get me wrong, the iPhone is nice, just not as user customisable, for me, as its a closed system: for example, I couldn't just plug iPhone in (unless changed since my version 3gs) and drag/drop a single file across onto it  - instead I would have to start itunes and sync the whole machine, which used to take 20mins (no joke) I had approx 15000 files syncing.

Plus some of my data is sensitive, and I still dont fully trust the cloud, and it seems like a lot of the "nicer/better" syncs involve 3rd parties cloudsites,  which I personally hate, you just have to trust blindly your data is being handled correctly, and I still have reservations, paper cant be hacked [:P]

The iphone is a nice phone, but for me and my current needs android is superior, there are other issues too, but this is a Logos Forum so will stop here.. and agree we may need to agree to disagree

I understand now. If you don't  mind the cloud (like me), you can easily have .pdf & word file access on iOS. With Apple's new cloud services it should get even easier.

I don't have anything against Andriod, but I prefer an all Apple ecosystem.

I certainly don't want to make this into a platform war. However where this seems to touch home with Logos, to me, is on design strategy. I used to be an Android kind of guy. Give me something that I can tweak to my own preferences. However I've really come to like the well thought out and implemented simplicity of iOS. I found that I spent so much time customizing on my old Pocket PCs that I never actually used the device. I know Android is light years from where Pocket PCs were.

That is why I like L4 so much more then L3. Everything is set up pretty close to the way I would do it outside the box except the very few things that I actually have to inject my preference into.

Since I have an iPod Touch and like it, I'm drawn to an Iphone. I'd hate to have to repurchase apps. We'll see in November when I'm ready to purchase.

<edit> As far as PDF's go, I simply email it to myself and open it from my inbox in iBooks. :-)

As much as I don't care for some of Apple's closed system, I guess it's that closed system which has me leaning that way. I've been looking at smartphones and tablets for months, and the perception that I have is if you simply want something to work so you can go about your business, then iPhone/iPad is the way to go. If you want to tweak the OS to do more precisely what you prefer, go with Android. I can do all that tweaking, but I simply do not want to spend the time required.

I am a little disappointed, though, that the iPhone 5 was not the new release. 4S seems like you're paying a premium for an updated device.

I was also hoping for the 5, but really, the 4S is what I wanted the 5 to be. Big improvement on the internals, from processor to antenna design, and a much improved camera. It's still too early for NFC or 4G to really be of any use to the vast majority of people, and I for one didn't need (or want) a bigger screen to take up more room in my pocket. When I want a bigger screen, I grab my iPad. So I was hoping for a 5 with a nifty redesign, but the 4S is satisfactory to me.

I wouldn't worry Bill - you only pay a premium if you have the old iPhone. If you move to the 4S from another brand you just pay the price of a 4S.

Its the sort of thing I do with my car every 3 years or so - except that the 'updated device' tends to be 3 years old.

Hi Mike. I've thought about it some more and did some reading. I have to agree with you. I may very well go with the 4S. Someone somewhere wrote (and Chris Roberts implied above) that if Apple has changed the form factor some with everything that is in the 4S and called it iPhone 5, everyone would have been ecstatic.

Which of course begs the question - can you think of a better form factor?

To me the overarching reason to go for an iPhone is integration. Having the same things on both iPhone, iPad and Desktop is a great advantage.

Suffering, as I am with a cold, I was able to deal with emails from my bed using the iPad and find them nicely filed on my iMac now I have made it downstairs.

HOWEVER ... the iPhone is not a desktop and, especially with Logos, you won't be able to use it as a substitute - and addition but not a substitute.

The only thing that I wanted to see in the new iPhone was a bigger memory - mine is chock full of songs.

I would like to have one even if I could only use the phone and not the cellular data, (only wifi). It would really help me to keep organized.

    Isn't the 64GB new?

It's a shame that you have to have a data plan if you own a smartphone. It would be a great "all in one" device: phone, PDA, and MP3 player. I would utilize 3G data only on occasion.

And, yes, it now has 64GB, for another $100 over the 32GB model. That's another aggravation with iPhones: no microSD card support. It seems outrageous to me to charge $100 for another 32GB storage. Maybe someone else has a different perspective. I would probably go with the 32GB model, enough to hold my iTunes songs and books I would want to download.

The only way around this is to buy an iPod touch, get a wifi hotspot, and use skype to make calls on the touch. The only thing keeping me from doing it is that I don't want another device in my pocket.

You don't.. but it is cost prohibitive to do otherwise. (You can buy an iPhone without a contract ~$700).

    . . . .

I may be wrong, but my understanding is that Verizon Wireless (my carrier) requires a data plan if you have a smartphone on their network.

    Bill -

It is my understanding that an "unlocked" iPhone does not require a data plan. It is also my understanding that Apple did NOT make "unlocked" CDMA iPhones (Verizon), so you would be correct. Either way, I would not want to spend $700 for the "cheap" iPhone. $30 a month for 24 months is $720. For "only" $200 more you could have had internet service!

Interesting. I agree about the numbers. Paying the full retail price doesn't make sense to me, either.

My mobile provider gives me 1 gig of data with my phone plan.

I very rarely touch more than a fraction of this as most of the time the iPhone hitches onto an available WiFi connection mostly at home or in Cafe Hotels etc.

The iPhone will always use WiFi when available rather than 3G.

You are correct Mike that it will always go to wifi, so long as you have it set to always  "Join" networks in the general settings!  My one son uses less than 100k per month because he is always on a university network where as another son uses over 2 gig per month because he never has a functioning network near by... he is a network trouble shooter!  just depends on what/where you are!

If you get an iPhone you should not need to repurchase your iPodTouch apps, you can re-download any of them under your apple customer id.

    Blessings!

I use PDF reader lite on my 4S and can sync files over my secure wifi. network without using ITunes

I bought an iPhone 4S (my first smartphone) and find it to be a marvelous device. It is fast, smooth, takes great photos, has lots of useful apps, including, of course, the it's-only-going-to-get-better Logos app.

Bill - I don't know if you have purchase any "Vyrso" books or not. One thing that I did on my iPad was to sort my Vyrso library by using "eBook." This allows me to see my Vyrso books at a quick glance in Vyrso. I use the Logos app for my regular Logos library.

Bill Moore, Just my 2 cents, but I believe that purchasing a 32 vs a 64 iPhone is like a church purchasing 10 acres when they could have purchased 20. Very soon you may wish you had more room. Good luck.

And with that, welcome to the Logos forums! [:)]

Perhaps, but I think 32GB is kind of the sweet spot for my needs. I don't do videos on a phone, I have all the music I want on my 4S, some 12.2GB. I've downloaded a few books and will more, and I still have 14.3GB available. The almost-anywhere access to my Logos resources precludes my needing to download too many. I think 32GB will work out fine, but we'll see.
