I was trying to say "Thus far I have been relying on Google Translate." -- I had Google Translate translate that for me. I guess it doesn't work very well, even when talking about itself. [:)]

Okay, that would be: "Bis jetzt habe ich mich auf Google Translate verlassen." Google Translate has massive problems translating e.g. English verb constructions into German verb constructions, often resulting in different meaning or simply making no sense at all ...

Well, when I ran that back through Google Translate the result made sense in English ("Until now I have relied on Google Translate.") and when I ran that back through to German it came out with exactly what you gave me. So I guess it can translate some English verb constructions fine, but "I have been relying" tricked it. And perhaps "Thus far" gave it some trouble too, but "Until now" was easier.

I guess Google Translate just got overwhelmed by the three verbs: "have been relying" - English and German are very different from each other when it comes to auxiliary verbs and the like.

I'd purchase this also.  His staying in Germany to pastor those who could not leave gives him a stronger ethos than Karl Barth (in my estimation) and his participation in the assissination attempt of Adolf Hitler posses some very interesting moral questions of when it is acceptable to rise up against your own government.

Given that Barth and Bonhoeffer were in very unlike situations, I think there's just no point in racking one's brain over who might have had the 'stronger ethos'. It should be mentioned that Bonhoeffer's own initial wish was to stay in London, where he had been from October 1933 on. Amongst other things it was a letter from Karl Barth affecting Dietrich Bonhoeffer to return to Germany. Karl Barth himself wasn't a German (something a lot of people aren't aware of) but Swiss, nevertheless getting involved in the German Kirchenkampf which led to him having to leave Germany for Switzerland.

Karl Barth was also the main drafter of the Barmen Declaration which was the foundation of the Confessing Church movement. The Barmen Declaration took several points of faith of the pro-Nazi "German Christian" churches and refuted them. "More specifically, The Barmen Declaration rejects (i.) the
subordination of the Church to the state (8.22-3) and (ii.) the
subordination of the Word and Spirit to the Church. '8.27 We reject the
false doctrine, as though the Church in human arrogance could place the
Word and work of the Lord in the service of any arbitrarily chosen
desires, purposes, and plans.' On the contrary, The Declaration
proclaims that the Church 'is solely Christ's property, and that it
lives and wants to live solely from his comfort and from his direction
in the expectation of his appearance.' (8.17) Rejecting domestication of
the Word in the Church, The Declaration points to the inalienable
lordship of Jesus Christ by the Spirit and to the external character of
church unity which 'can come only from the Word of God in faith through
the Holy Spirit. Thus alone is the Church renewed' (8.01): it submits
itself explicitly and radically to Holy Scripture as God's gracious

Perhaps it’s a publisher issue, but I have noticed that Bonheoffer's books do not seem to be available on Kindle either. It would really be nice to have this worked out so books such as these can be available for those of us who rely almost exclusively on digital books due to work situations.

I looked at some of the print editions and have come to the conclusion that there may be a copyright issue.  I would imagine that the original edition (in German) is probably PD by now, but the translation may be another issue.

especially we from Germany would love a German edition, but your imagination fails you with respect to the German copyright laws: works fall into the PD 70 years after the death of the author, which would be 2015 (Dec. 31) in case of Bonhoeffer. If the compilation and editing of letters, notes etc done by Eberhard Bethge after the war (for the Ethics and other prison writings) were to be interpreted as co-authoring, the situation is even worse.

On the other hand, those of his works that were published in the US shortly after the war (such as the Cost of Discipleship) would either be in the PD already or, if copyrights were renewed, are non-PD for publication plus 95 years which is even longer than 2015.

Thus it seems that a Logos edition of Bonhoeffer's works would require a contract with the current copyright holders, be it in English or German language (preferably both)

My imagination with regard to the German copyright laws doesn't fail me since I can imagine virtually any situation.  I freely admit, however, my ignorance regarding German copyright.  Thank you for enlightening me.

That's more money in their pocket now to help them finish publishing the whole series. Seems like a no brainer to me, but then again I'm not in the publishing industry.

I am reading Ethics right now and the depth of the content really makes me want this in Logos. I hope someone from Logos is reading this. Bonhoeffer is one of the most important theologians of the 20th century.

Woot! I jumped in before even needing to know what all is included. It's pricey, but I consider Bonhoeffer an essential in my library. I have four of these already in print but it will be good to have those fully searchable, and also to have the rest of the volumes.

This volume has not been produced as of yet.

Fortress on their website states a publication date 01 Oct 2013 for the english translation of the missing volume 14. Does anyone know how quick Logos will be to release the electronic version and whether this will be an upgrade for free for those of us who have purchased the bundle of the other fifteen volumes?

Ooops, I was just checking and found out that Logos offers volume 14 as pre-order (http://www.logos.com/product/33634/dietrich-bonhoeffer-works-vol-14-theological-education-at-finkenwalde-1935-1937). At present, it shows the status "gathering interest" only. We need to push this further. I own the German volume 14 and like it very much, it has more than a 1000 pages and is really worth much more than 39.95 $ which is the present pre-order price.

Please help to push this!

I'm interested in Bonhoeffer too.  Actually it would be great if Logos would include the German text too. 

Reviving this thread from long ago: Faithlife just yesterday put the German original of Bonhoeffer's works onto PrePub. As far as I know, this will be the first digital edition at all of the critical edition of Bonhoeffer's works in German. (Note: The 17 printed volumes contain over ten thousand pages and retail at Amazon for over $400 - even used copies). If you read German well, there's a nice promotional website and some background testimonial by a reformed German blogger.

For those of us who already own (parts of) the English translation - or those who want both of it: there's a German/English bundle, which gives dynamic pricing discount to current owners of DBW in English.
