Perseus Collection

Is there a way to find out what books should be in the Perseus Collection? For example, on line I can get Homer's Iliad in Greek, but it did not download to my computer in Logos; only the English version. Yet Homer's Odyssey was in Greek and in English. Same with Thucydides History of the Peloponnesian War. The Logos download only gave me the English version and the Commentary on it, but no Greek version of the History of the Peloponnesian War. Also, I can't find a Greek version of Eusebius' Ecclesiastical History in the Logos download.

Any ideas or explanations?

Allen, some of the Perseus collection is covered by individual copyright and Logos did not have the rights to redistribute those works. Only those in the collection covered by the Creative Commons attribution were distributed. that is probably what you are noticing. There is no list of which is which but each individual volume can be checked on the Perseus site for this information.

I think what you will find is that in this particular instance Logos has an excellent (very excellent, indeed!) Iliad that it has been marketing for the last couple of years. (In several languages, yet!) It is likely that Logos chose intentionally not to jeopardise their marketing of this version with the free one; so they chose not to include it.

I tend to agree with Milford's explanation. I don't think copyright had anything to do with it. You might also note that the Logos Perseus collection also does not contain LSJ since Logos already sells the LSJ. One third item — Smyth's Greek Grammar — in in a collection on prepub and is also not included. I don't know why Lewis & Short's Latin dictionary wasn't included (Perhaps they are considering releasing their own?).

Here is the 'official' explanation of the copyright issue. It is Vincent Setterholm's statement in the second post: http://community.logos.com/forums/t/39003.aspx He was addressing the question about the Iliad in Greek, but I think it pertains to other works that were not released with a Creative Commons license.

Just after the Perseus collection as announced I surfed over to the Perseus website and looked at the copyright statement. The Creative Commons copyright that covers most of the Perseus works is very interesting.

After reading these, a couple of thoughts are interesting to me

Logos didn't have to ask for permission (though there was probably some contact) to offer the Perseus collection, they could have just taken the XML file (or coded a bot to download everything)
Logos couldn't have offered the Perseus collection at a cost

I know this doesn't apply to the specific resource being discussed but I find it fascinating.
