Companion Resourse for the M'Cheyne Reading Plan
I am sure somebody must have travelled this road before me so I am seeking a recommendation.
Each year I ensure that I read at least one translation of the Bible all the way through by following the M'Cheyne reading plan.
Since getting Logos it has been easy to sit another resource beside the bible panel to help with explanation about the history and setting of the various chapters. This year I have been using 'How to read the Bible Book by Book' as a companion resource.
I am now starting to think about next year, I will probably read through the new edition of the NIV.
Does anybody have a recommendation for the resource to sit alongside it?
Ideally it would be a chapter based resource and point out the intricacies of the text in terms of cultural, legal, and doctrinal content that might be missed by an untrained reader. I would be happy to double the time spent reading the actual Bible but don't think I could manage much more than that without falling irrecoverably behind.

D.A. Carson's For the Love of God is a two part companion to the M'Cheyne's reading plan. Each volume includes a commentary on one part or perhaps multiple parts of the day's M'Cheyne's Reading. I have been through both volumes as I have done M'Cheyne's reading plan multiple times. It is a very helpful resource.

Hi! Like Mike I have been looking for an alternative 'commentary' to suit the McCheyne Bible Reading Plan. Like Jacob I have used Don Carson's 'Love of God' collection which is an excellent resource but now I would like a change.
I'm interested in the Daily Treasures from the Word of God which is out on pre-pub at the moment as it looks like it might use a similar reading system even if not strictly McCheyne.

Failing that I might use N.T Wrights 'Everyone Commentary's' (as far as they go) as a suitable tie in. If any one knows of another specific McCheyne Commentary System (or even feels like writing one!!!!) - let us know! [:D]
You may just want to use a concise commentary like the Abridged EBC (http://www.logos.com/product/5455/the-expositors-bible-commentary-abridged) and have it linked to your active window that displays the M'Cheyne's text.

Thank you all for your help and suggestions - I will have a look at Don Carson's books - they sound ideal.
How to read the Bible Book by Book - was quite a good resource to start with - particularly the introductions and especially the 'How to read' part of the introductions. Being a small book their were often a large number of chapters lumped together under a single paragraph of explanation.
Not being tied to the M'Cheyne plan it made it fit by having four copies of the Book open at different places and under different tabs. Easy to manage with M'Cheyne because the first tap was always the first reading - the second the second tap and so on. This is the way I might use a smaller commentary edition.
Seeing that there is some interest in this concept you may expect me to raise this matter again about this time next year.

Great Thread! I never thought about getting a layout for devotions. I will do that now.
have 4 open Bibles and then I could get a commentary or something alongside it.

My devotional layout has notes, two Bibles, 2 study Bibles, and the Explorer tool (very good because you can hover over your top commentaries to quickly get what they say on a verse)
