I had a sales rep help me out this past spring and I would like to use him again but have lost his name and email. Can someone help me with names. I am thinking maybe Jim but that may not be close. I think I would recognize if I saw it again or maybe someone could read my mind through the internet. I'll press my forehead against the screen.

Save your screen and spend the replacement money on more Logos resources. Also going to church with a bandaged forehead might raise a few questions.

I bet you were served by Jim-Ray Higgins. If that is who you are trying to remember I am sorry to inform you he no longer works for Logos (as of late Spring.) There are other sales reps who also please their client list. Mine is Dave Kaplan.

NICOT/NICNT has never been broken up for individual volume sale. This has been requested many times. Logos did finally publish the discontinued NICOT/NICNT volumes (due to many requests) and you can buy them individually. There are approximately 8 of them. If you are interested in those I can try to search up the list.

The College Press series has appeal to me. Do you think it would be worth waiting for Xmas sale or is this about as low as it will go?

If you don't like it, you get your money back.
If they put it on sale cheaper at Christmas, you can secure that price.(return and re-order.)
If they "renew" or extend the same sale price through December you will have enjoyed it 30 days longer than those who hesitated.

IMHO NICOT/NICNT are over-rated and WAYYYYY TOO over priced. I own F.F. Bruce volumes on Acts and Hebrews and believe you me, I've gotten better information off of other commentaries. Pillar's on Hebrews is better than Bruce and the Pillar's volume on Acts beats down the one on the NICNT series hands down! Compare Gordon Fee's volume on 1 Corinthians to the one written by Bryan Rosner and Roy E. Ciampa on the PNTC series; you'll soon realize that the one on the PNTC series is way better than the one on the NICNT. I know is just my opinion, but hey, think about it, why spend 1500 for an incomplete set that is not really that good? I think the only reason why the NICNT/OT series is famous is because of the names that have contributed to it and a publishing company that's trying to squeeze as much money as they can out of ministers who are just trying to preach the Word to save this world from eternal damnation.

Douglas, [:-*] Your slip is showing. It is clear to the careful reader your lackluster opinion of NICOT/NICNT has more to do with doctrinal leaning than scholarship. The groundswell of public opinion resulted in Eerdmans publishing the discontinued volumes of the series. Most who are familiar with NICOT/NICNT put it on their short list of commentaries they would have in their dream library based on content, not factoring price.

F.F. Bruce & Gordon Fee are two of the authors that make NICOT/NICT a desirable set (throw in Bruce Waltke too)

If I misunderstood who you are referring to as the "publishing company that's trying to squeeze as much money as they can out of ministers," I apologize. But whichever company you are referencing is probably doing a service in most minister's eyes.

just my opinion: I believe NICOT/NICNT is worth the higher price we have to pay (got mine heavily discounted from Pre-Pub) Just because we get a Super-Duper bang-for-the-buck buying Word Biblical Commentary, does not mean the other, higher priced resources are not worth it. I can say the same about Anchor Yale Bible Dictionary. Just because the IVP Essential Collection is a better value for the price than AYBD does not mean the later is worth every penny of it's asking price. Thanks for indulging me. [C]

None of us knows for sure, but I think it unlikely that the NICOT / NT will ever sell for less than $1,000. I think that was the pre-pub price. I know I paid over $1200.

Well SuperTramp, you gave your opinion, I gave mine; that's all there was to it. Is not so much of doctrinal leanings because I've learned a few things from Bruce and Fee, but over all I just think that set is way too over priced for the content. People wanting it just shows how people can get brain-washed to think that if they don't have a certain set then their preaching is incomplete. If I owned that set (and i'll prolly get it when it goes on a real good sale - less than a $1000 bucks) I wouldn't think I'm more complete or less complete without it. My preaching should be based on the Bible (with some help from certain reference works) and not on which set of commentaries I own.

Anyway, no arguing intended here; just personal opinions that's all.

I find it amusing to hear about a mostly newer commentary series being flaunted over an earlier one. Curious especially since not only the earlier one is cited by the newer and much of the information presumed by the newer one is because they stand on the shoulders of the former authors. No doubt that Pillar might not even exist were it not for all the sales the same publisher made and makes from the NICOT/NICNT series.

I'm not yet in a position to replace my print volumes for NICOT and NICNT, but I look forward to that day.

It is just fine for you to value the NICOT/NICNT set at a lower dollar amount than Jack or others. It is your judging others' reasons for buying at a higher price than you are willing to give. If the others judged you, they might come up with "Douglas loves his money more than tools for Bible study." Doesn't sound very nice and is probably not true either.

I would venture to say, "One does not NEED a seminary degree (or any degree at all) to share the gospel from a pulpit or on the street corner. It definitely helps, but does the Holy Spirit need anything more than for us to submit and get out of the way?

If the shoe fits, wear it Jack...I'm surprise you don't know that at your age. Brain wash is not an insult is a reality. I know one too many ministers who have purchased the set just because a friend had it or they heard good things about it or because someone thought that other commentaries wouldn't exist if it wasn't for that particular set...LOL...so how often do most of them consult NICOT/NT? They barely do that, but they still boast that it is the first set that they go to when they are studying the Bible just because everybody else says the same thing and owns that set. I own a few copies and I can honestly tell you that I don't see what the whole deal is all about, they are just commentaries.

I can tell you one thing: Every time I've consulted my NICNT volumes and then read the Bible, the Bible sure ends up shedding a lot of light on those commentaries and other commentaries who have been written by "supposedly great Bible Scholars." And I wrote "Great Bible Scholars" slow because I know you can't read fast...[:D]...and I wrote it with a little twist of sarcasm, which I know you probably noticed too...hehehe.

Anyway, if it makes you feel important having NICOT/NT believe you me, I'm happy for you and all those who own it. Like I said, I mayyyy own it some day when it's below $1000 which is exactly what it should be priced at.

Leaving Jack's age out of it for a minute...I am surprised more young-uns aren't wise enough to realize a pile of little green bills is a very bad way to secure wealth. It is much better to die with nothing in the bank and a whole bunch of treasures laid up in Heaven. Buying golf clubs may not help you, but a few well-chosen study tools just might make a person a little better equipped to win souls and minister to a congregation's needs.

I know "young-uns" because I have so many. The pile of little green bills means we can be better stewards by using money to obtain tools and talents that can be used to work for God. Different servants need different tools. Some missionaries use a bicycle to carry the Gospel to the next community. Other missionaries would find a bicycle totally useless. It is the same way with commentaries. Some can make productive use of them. Other servants may not have a pulpit ministry.

As for the great preachers of the past; well, they were liars, arrogant, weak and peer-dependent too. Every one of us needs redemption. If any are "good" it is only the goodness of God. But some people, especially those who are saved, can be honest every now and then. If a person tells me they benefit from NICOT/NICNT I will believe they do. Same scenario with Interpreter's Bible or even J.Vernon McGee's Thru the Bible Commentary.

I said I was sorry in my note, but her comments were unnecessary. It's like everybody feels the need to interject when I was only giving my honest opinion in the first place. Read the whole thread -- Jack took offense and then I replied in a fair moderate comment and all of the sudden everybody decided to make a bigger deal than it really was. Only one person ever was allowed to call me "Georgie", and that was my stepmother since my father was also George. Personally, I don't own them and don't intend to purchase them since they don't deal with the original texts in what I would consider to be a suitable manner. Hate to break it to you, but in my family women are bright and educated. My Mother's cousin was still an active professor at the University of Texas at 90. My Mother's aunt wrote her last book on education in America at 93. My grandmother ran a science lab at the University of Chicago before she married. Anne Marbury Hutchinson got kicked out of the Boston Colony for leading Bible study for wormen. If you ever are ready for a polite and logical discussion, I'd be glad to discuss with you why I made the denominational shift I did Young guns are more apt to be embarrassed than I - I have years of experience in a profession requiring precise thought and years of reading a range of material. Besides do you really want to raise the question "which is more powerful - the gun or the pen?"[H]

I sent an 18 yr. old "young-'un" to Navy & Marine boot camps and they sent me back a man who can swim, perform medical procedures on the battlefield, carry a 230lb soldier on his back for miles, hit whatever he shoots at, and best of all; rise up and call his mother blessed.
