The Recommended Commentary posts may get a little spotty as he gear up for Christmas. Look for the Recommended Commentaries: Ruth post soon!
In the meantime, what commentaries are you using for studying the book of 1 Samuel?
Not precisely a commentary, but
Driver, Samuel Rolles. Notes on the Hebrew Text and Topography of the Books of Samuel. Oxford: Clarendon Press, 1913.
is worth checking.
College Press NIV on Samuel
NAC on Samuel
Analytical Bible Expositor on Samuel
Bergen in NAC, Tsumura in NICOT, and Dale Ralph Davis in the Focus on the Bible series.
Dale Ralph Davis in the Focus on the Bible series
Amen to that.
Dale Ralph Davis in the Focus on the Bible series Amen to that.
Amen to that too! I loaned the print copy from a friend and it was so good. What I liked about it is that it didn't even read like a commentary. Someday I'll hopefully get it from Logos.

Since George mentioned Driver, I must also put in a plug for McCarter's use of the Dead Sea Scrolls for this convoluted text. Other than that, Campbell in Forms of OT Lit is good as is Klein in the Word series.
I should have mentioned Tony's work on Samuel. I was in grad school with him — good man.
1-2 Samuel (Interpretation) - Brueggemann
I love it. Anything by Driver.
Is it resurrection day again? This thread dates back to December 2011! Hah, time sure flies! I was on vacation for the entire month of December that year 😂
