Bug: Quotes Ignored in Search Criteria

I'm liking the search that exists more & more, but we still need some help in narrowing potential results.

You've already heard that we need to be able to specifiy a search range (verse/verses/book/books). So I won't repeat that.

You've already heard that we we need some sort of search operators (e.g., schemas could include AND, OR, etc.; any words, all words, only words, etc.; or some other schema, but something...)

But what's there now also needs some help when quote marks are used. An example:

  1. Goal: find passage(s) that talk about God wiping away our tears. Attempt using search term "tears".
  2. Whether search term is tears or "tears" (whether or not quotes are used), current search finds all stem endings for tear--many, many verses more than desired.
  3. This is a bug.

Grace & Peace,
Bill

    3. This is a bug.

    Unfortunately, it's a Request.

The Search defaults to "Match all word forms" as in desktop Logos where quotes similarly have no effect.

Quotes do work for a phrase search, though e.g. "of thanksgiving"

    Hi Dave,

Yes, it works the same, & you have a point.

However, L4 gives us so many ways to limit the search that are NOT available on android, that we either count their absence in adroid as bugs or count the bevior in quotes as a bug on both android and on L4.... After all, why would we ever put quotes around it (being able to get stemming on a single word without quotes) unless we wanted to eliminate stemming? To me, stemming within quotes as a bug in android & L4 seems a stronger case than absence of all L4's ability to limit search in android. [;)] [:D]

I've been wondering all night whether it was good or bad to be out of the pecking order. [:S]

(OK, so that was a groaner... LOL)

Thanks, Dave... more seriously, how should I proceed? Give feedback in L4 that it's a bug there, too?

No, because you can toggle the "Match all word forms" option to affect stemming. Quotes is used for phrases.

    <huge grin>

    So you're saying there's no bug, it's a feature.

Guess I'll limit my comment to this forum... there NEEDS to be a way to limit search results--and that includes some way to control stemming. I don't have an ios device, so I can't check the ios app to know whether it's coming. But it's still needed.

    Blessings, Dave.

[Edit] Footnote: to me, the quote behavior for a single word still seems irrational & a bug on both platforms, if the behavior is different when it's a phrase of more than one word.

    I want that as well.

Quotes are used to delimit a phrase (which is more than 1 word). Quotes around a single word aren't needed and they are ignored i.e. you get the same results as using the word without quotes. But:

"Lord Jesus"  is a totally different Search than

    Lord Jesus

as the second will find occurrences of the words in any order and in any position (same as Lord AND Jesus).

You can use both searches on the Android.

Thanks Dave, I understand the difference. My disagreement is more fundamental. If a user gives ANY indication what they want, to me it seems arrogant on the part of the software to ignore it. Putting quotes around anything says you want exactly that. To ignore it on the technical ground that a phrase is more than one word (you're correct on that point) still seems a disservice to the user, even if they didn't phrase their request in the most technically correct way. It's like a doctor claiming that the operation was a technical success when the patient dies. Just my opinion, & I respect that you feel differently. [:)]

Blessings to you, brother... I'm turning this thread loose, now, having fully expressed my opinion & feel like I've been heard (even if Logos has been silent through the discussion). But it isn't worth damaging our unity in Christ to persist, so I'm done. Many blessings to you, & THANKS for all you do for these forums.

I don't have a problem with what you want, Bill. But both L3 and L4 are against that interpretation of quotes i.e. they've been programmed to treat quotes as delimiting a phrase! By all means submit a Suggestion, but don't expect it to be implemented with quotes.
