Why the meaning of the definite article and not the word

Presently, I'm looking at James 4:16 with several Dictionaries opened. I want to look at the word "boastings" so click on the English word "boastings" - right click and click again on the Complete Word Study Dictionary. When I click on the GK word for "boasting" I instead get the definite article brought up.

I'm finding the only way I can get a meaning is to click on the Louw Nida Dictionary. Even having all the other Dictionaries linked, when I click on an alternative one, the word in this case "boastings" will not come up but those Dictionaries go off to something else.

My question is - is there a way to do this where I can get to the word I want instead of rumbling off to the definite article - also having the Dictionaries linked, is there a way when Louw Nida is opened to that particular word, I can have the other Dictionaries sync with that?

When you pull up the words using the right click menu, you must be sure you are selecting the correct lemma. Remember, that the articles in Greek often drop off and are translated by one word. So "o theos" is just translated by God without the article (see John 1:1). So ensure you have the right words lemma choosen. I'll post a SS if you'd like.

Bootjack ... I'm trying to guess what you're looking at (the resource with Jam 4:16). None of mine have articles attached. But I see you're going against CWS and if I remember right they have a separate greek numbering system which Mark knows a lot about. Don't know if that's what you're driving at.

Alexander - I've the correct word selected. It's that it's preceded by the article but holding the word over "boastings" - I still get the definite article. I'm right clicking - and choosing of course the Lemma.

Any further advice, let it come this way please. Thanks!

Denise, I'm not sure what you mean by CWS. I'm using the KJV 1900 Interlinear but if I move over to the ESV, both give me the same result - a definite article before *boastings* --- I'd like to click on *boastings* - the Lemma and then would like it to bring up the word *boastings* instead of the definite article.

Obviously I'm missing something here - let me know.

Ok - I think I just woke up and found my problem. I'm clicking on the Lemma for the definite article - I hadn't noticed this before - most words, I see Lemma and click on that. That usually brings up the word meaning, in this case *boastings.*

But suddenly (and without warning) I just noticed the Lemma for the word *boastings* a bit further down the page when I right click. Amazing what I can do when I'm awake!!!???

Well, looks like Alexander was correct (and you too!). But the issue you're frustrated with has shown up on the forum frequently. Our Logosian hands are 'fast on the draw'. I could always tell I'd hit an article by mistake when LSJ took forever to load the entry. Articles and such get lots of airtime.

CWS was the dictionary you were using; it uses a separate numbering system.

Suggestions forum has => never default to the article.

Likewise wish right click would skip over definite article when two or more lemmas are displayed.
