4.5b11: Performance of highlighting is still woeful - Plese don't go to 4.5RC ....

The speed of adding note icons continues to be woeful.  Logos please don't go to RC with it running like this.... I know how important it is to get sync 2.0 out there so people can start of their reading plans across multiple devices, but performance like this... is going to create a whole new set of disappointments.  At the moment it just does not cut the mustard.

    Agreed. That's pretty unacceptable.

It's important that all aspects of sync work efficiently. I don't want my phone to be clogged up with sync calls, especially if it can happen as background data i.e. at any time.

I agree it is still sluggish and would probably be a disaapointment to many. I will say I have not experienced (most of the time) the kind of delays you captured in the screencast. Is that on a PC or Mac?

There have been performance improvements made to the notes style drop down menu which will ship in the next program update.  Please let us know if you continue to see significant delays after installing the update.

Thanks Tonya, I will look out for next release.

Tonya sorry been really busy lately, I have tried the RC1 in regards to this issue, there is a slight improvement, but still not good.  I'll post a screencast tonight when I get home from work.

  • Wonder about upgrading to Logos 4.5 RC 2, then do a screencast ?

    Keep Smiling [:)]

I created a custom palette with about 30 styles (many with images) but wasn't able to reproduce the delay that your screencast was showing.

How many styles do you have in your largest palette, and what are your hardware specs? When you open the note style drop-down, is Logos4.exe using 100% of a single CPU for the whole 15-20s, or is it mostly idle during that time?

Ok here is result with RC 2. (Complete with my typo at the end).  On every occasion I had to click twice on the note indicator to get the menu to come up...

No logs were created this time.  I've run script to turn logging on, don't know if installation of RC has re-set system not to create logs, but I normally get logs.

    Windows 7 Ultimate 32bit

AMD Phenom II x4 810 Processor, 2.6 GHz

    4GB RAM (3.25 usable)

ATI Radeon HD 4800 Series 1GB Video Card

Logos is installed on D drive with 238GB free. C drive has 529GB free space.

Largest pallet has 103 styles or thereabouts and next largest has about 75 styles.

CPU usage was hovering around 26-37% while try to open the drop down.

I still can't reproduce this problem here.

At the beginning of the screencast, it looks like most of the delay is in expanding a note (to show the "Content" editor) when you click it (and then there's a smaller delay on the second click to show the menu). If you just click from highlight to highlight (to show the "Content" rich text editor) is that slow? Or is it only slow when clicking the note indicator icon?

It looks like it's responding pretty quickly at 3:08; do you have any idea what might be different between that and the other notes you edited? Is changing a "Recipient" highlight always faster than changing an "Author" highlight?

Bradley  yes there is a delay in expanding a note also, but simply going from highlight to highlight still gets delay.  On occassion it does respond quicker when moving to a highlight of the same style, but as soon as you go to a different style the menu once again takes forever to load.  Tonight I had it wheel of death, and the region of the screen where the menu was to be drawn turned black, before the menu eventually appeared, but still with a blacked out region around the menu as shown in image:

    image

Also get from time to time in error log entry as follows:

    Failed to create BitmapSource.
System.NotSupportedException: No imaging component suitable to complete this operation was found.  etc.

Last one of these was on 24th.

    ErrorLog and Logos4.log attached.  7384.Logos Log Files.zip

I am going to look to see if there are any updated device drivers for m video card, on the off chance this makes any difference.

At this point I don't have extensive annotations associated with  these particular palletes so if you think it worthwhile Bradley,  I am prepared to delete them and if going back to just the standard palletes make any difference as they can be easily re-imported from LDLS 3.0g which I still have installed. Let me know what you think on doing so.

Before you delete them, it may help to split them into smaller palettes. (We wanted to optimise the display so that only the specific styles visible on screen were loaded, thus speeding up the time it takes to open the list. Unfortunately, due to some limitations in WPF, we were only able to trim it back to loading just the current palette that's displayed. But that still means that if your palette has 100+ styles, all those styles are loaded and rendered before the list is displayed. However, if that palette was split into five palettes of 20 styles, it might be much quicker to load just the current palette in order to show the menu.)

It would take a bit of time, but you could create "Inductive (Additional) 2", "Inductive (Additional) 3", etc. Then go through the list of styles, and in blocks of (say) 20, click the drop-down menu next to a style, choose Move, and move it to a new palette.

Will try that first Bradley.  I've got a training day at church on Saturday that will take up most of the day, but will at least start on that this weekend sometime and see how that approach works out. Thanks for working through this issue with me.

Thanks for working through this issue with me.

Thanks for your patience in working through this. (We're still a little mystified as to why it's so much slower for you, because we can't reproduce those delays even with large palettes here.)

Still working on breaking up the larger palettes and doing a clean up of them as I know there is some duplication as these are ones that were shared by others in L3 days.  I report back as soon as I finish this cleanup.
