Bibles Repriced to $10.00!

Hey Y'all,

Yesterday I was surfing on the Logos website when I saw that they had repriced (sale) many Bibles for $10.00. So I picked up the New Jerusalem Bible and The Good News translation. I am considering picking up the New American Bible, as well.

I am so happy to pay the lower price!! Everybody go check it out! Smile

Kudos, Kendall!!, and thank you for the info., I had been looking at Complete Jewish Bible, Rotherham's Emphasized, and the Amplified Bible for quite a while. The first two had been on pre-pub. and I had to let them go [:'(], but these prices are much better!! Pays to read the blogs [:D]

If have purchased a Logos base package, suggest checking library since many resources in NAS Electronic Bible Library are included in various base packages. For example, Calvin's Institutes is included in 7 base packages => http://www.logos.com/comparison

One resource is not included: NAS Exhaustive Concordance. With Logos 4 search capabilities, including Bible Word Study, suspect concordance would not be missed.

Thanks for the link. I checked out the Louis Segond French Bible and I noted that the Logos blurb is inaccurate.

I would say that the Segond 1910 is equivalent to the Revised Standard of 1881 (hope I have that date correct in my memory). I have examined closely the Louis Segond 1910 version for many years along with the Greek text (TR and the Critical text) and it was my daily reading Bible. http://www.logos.com/product/273/louis-segond-1910-french-bible

Also, note that if someone desires a Louis Segond Bible that is equivalent or close to the KJV, he should consult the Trinitarian Bible Society which publishes such a bible in French. They have an internet site.

The NET Bible is not grayed out when I look at the page, yet I have the NET Bible with my Platinum package, the same edition as being offered for $10.

QUESTION: Is this $10 pricing for these Bibles a short-term offer, or will they remain at this price for some time?

The restriction only says that the "billing address" must be in America. It doesn't say the downloading computer must be there. If that information is accurate, you can try finding a helpful American to 'exchange Christmas gifts' with, and an equally helpful sales rep to get you through the process. I e John Doe buys the New Jerusalem for Jane Doe, and Jane Doe buys some other $10 Bible for John Doe. Of course, it will be much easier if the $10 price lasts until we can buy things from each others wishlists directly, without troubling a sales rep, but we don't know that right now -- and in any case the season for gifts is now, isn't it? [:)]

Interesting...hasn't always been the case I have the New Jerusalem Bible. I think possibly I got it as part of the Logos 2.1 Scholars Package, but not 100% on that, it was from those days anyway I would have first got a license file for it.

I remember the NIV had a lot of countries it could not be bought from and it was hard to convince some people that I wasn't an Austrian[:D]

Anyway, I bought another bible to prove that you don't have to wait ages for the download (it was available to download in minutes without a restart!)[:)]

I think that's true even if you don't include the Gideon bibles that suddenly disappear from hotel rooms. I have two of them in my apartment at the moment which were there when I moved in. I've tried to give them away, but I haven't had any takers.

Yes, you can't checkout with it in your basket. It wasn't that long ago that non-US people didn't get the NIV even if you bought a base package.

This makes me wonder; If you visited the United States and purchased an NIV Bible, when you return to the UK would customs agents be remiss in their duties to allow that Bible into your country? Would the copyright holder want to confiscate that Bible?

The license states it is is for sale in the US and that is where Logos is selling it from. You are not purchasing the Bible in the UK. The monetary units Logos is collecting is the US dollar, is it not?

I can not imagine the nightmare that could ensue when a US based missionary buys Logos software and goes to a country where some of the content is not licensed to be sold. Are laws being broken? Is Logos responsible to disable any content that may not be permissible? Will Logos have to monitor the user's geographical location and determine boundaries of legitimate use?

I think I know how Brother Andrew would handle this. [:D] Just place the offending Bibles in hidden resources, a bit like putting them under the bonnet of a VW Beetle. [au] I am so proud I used a British word here. "Bonnet"....reminds me of margarine.....

The publishers want to encourage US and Canada sales as it apparently is selling well enough in other countries[8-|] However, I have changed my mind after reading a critical review and sampling some of the text...

Yes, thank you Kendall... I also saw your post and got the ISV. Even though I had it in NT only, I would never have paid the full price of 26.99, since the upgrade seemed to only apply as a pre-pub offer. But, for $10, I just bought the whole thing. I was especially interested in Isaiah (by Peter W. Flint) which had DSS as the base text for translation. Now am just looking forwart to Ottley to come off pre-pub...tee hee.

[:D] Funny i should find myself on this side of the copyright fence. I am usually defending Logos selling Bible software for a profit.

I guess I am not really complaining about geographical licensing. I am lamenting the fact we are caught in the lurch between the remnant of Imperialism and the new age of Internationalism. Nobody saw this coming and our copyright laws are stuck in the last century. At least our grandchildren will have an easier time complying with copyright licenses. It was tongue-in-cheek to suggest the Bible publishers do not want people to buy the Bible.

EDIT: I just finished hiding the ISV-NT but my Comparison tab shows two versions of Mat 23:38 for the ISV. I'm too lazy to go see why. I just unhid the ISV-NT! I'm always curious when there's a difference.

I bought the ISV OT when it was on pre-pub. My main interest in the ISV was due to the fact that David Alan Black was the New Testament editor. I taught myself Greek from David Alan Black's book, which I can recommend to anyone interested. A most excellent choice for the study of Koine Greek:

It is more than just spelling and grammar. 1 John 5:7 was added, which Luther did not add, grammar has been changed (compare Genesis 4:1) and Luther's marginal notes are missing!

About a week ago I brought this to their attention. I am still suprised that they are selling it at full price.

"The other company" (windows) has the same problem. When I brought this to their attention their CEO wrote back and said that they will try to get this fix soon. They also don't "sell" this Bible, but offer it free with their program, so for me that is less of an offense. With Logos you have to pay for it (if you want to download it for L4 - it is free on Biblia.com).

Sounds like you didn't restart L4 after hiding it. The Comparison works as expected if ISV-NT is properly hidden.

Yep ... kind of lucky too. I didn't expect the wording in ISV would change, especially on that specific phrase. All the other translations I have were reluctant to move away from desolate / deserted (semantic attributing). The Bohairic had no problem with it. It's a very interesting verse (the significance).

I shall reply to myself to give a little more information on the blurb for the Louis Segond Bible where it is called the equivalent to the King James Bible.

Examine this text and you will see it is not. 1 Tim 3:16 from Biblia dot com

16Et,

King James reads God was manifest, not "celui" because in French it would read: "Dieu a été manifesté..."

The Trinitarian Bible Society puts out a revised Louis Segond which IS equivalent to the KJV.

I have discussed this with a sales person yesterday at Logos who told me to write to suggest which I did. But the Logos blurb on their site remains to be changed. Maybe they will see this? [:D]
