Downloaded resources and iPhone system restore

I had understood from the recent Logos app update that the system would keep track of all downloaded books (for offline use) and would know automatically, then, which ones to restore if one had to do a complete iPhone system restore.

I had to delete my Logos app for a particular reason and then re-inserted it onto my iPod Touch. I thought that it would automatically know which resources I had previously downloaded and re-download them. This did not happen.

Is there some sort of toggle that one must engage to allow this new feature to work, or am I perhaps misunderstanding what the updated feature is able to do?

Speaking from a position of almost total ignorance - I think that the situation is different to way you understood it.

I have a mapping app that requires downloads of map sheets - if I delete the app I have to do the download of the maps again. The app doesn't recall the maps I had previously.

I think the same think applies to all apps. It is in part one of the strengths of iOS; each app is self contained and only interacts with others by prescribed methods. It makes rouge apps far less dangerous. The down side is that if you delete the app then nothing is left behind and there is no fragment of code with the info you require.

If on the other hand Apple now update the iOS arrangements are made for resources like your books to remain on the device in protected memory slots ready to be re-engaged by the app once the new OS is active.

The upshot is if you delete stuff it goes - if Apple delete stuff it stays.

Here's what made me think that the resources would be automatically "remembered and uploaded" after a system restore . . .

In the "What's New in Version 1.8.3" information on the iTunes pages, it notes this:

Improved

* Book downloads can be resumed

*Book downloads are restarted if the app is quit

*Books are downloaded again if they are missing, e.g. after a restore from backup

It's that final item that gave me hope, since after a complete system restore, there would be no books present under the previous regimen. That final statement makes it sound like there is some recollection of the items once downloaded, and then an automatic re-download.

As mentioned, however, this didn't seem to happen for me, but then I wondered if I had overlooked something in the process.

After restoring an iPad from iTunes backup, was Thankful for option to download all resources that had been previously downloaded for offline use.

i experienced the same thing after recently upgrading to 5.xx. both Logos and Vyrso asked if I wanted to re-download resources that weren't yet completed. that probably is different than deleting the actual app.

The specific change was made because of iCloud in iOS 5. Prior to iCloud, it didn't really matter how resources were downloaded. But after some changes due to iCloud, it was possible that your phone would delete all your downloaded resources in certain circumstances. So Logos added a list of all downloaded resources to your phone, and made sure this list was backed up to iCloud and your Mac/PC. When you restore from backup, Logos gets that list back, then re-downloads those resources again. But because you never restored your backup, the app never got the list, so never knew which resources to download.
