Can someone help me Re: Search Pointers!!!!

Hello All:

I purchased my software about 8 months ago, and LOVE it. There is quite a learning curve, but I am pretty computer/software savvy and seem to be picking it up pretty well. I have watched all of the "unofficial logos" videos and found them very helpful.

I had registered for Camp Logos, but unfortunately had to cancel because of some health issues. I was really looking forward to grabbing some pointers.

My biggest issue seems to be SEARCH. I look for HOURS to find what I am looking for. I must be doing something wrong when it comes to search. Can someone please help me here. Let me give you an example or two and you tell me how you would go about it.

How would you search for a chart or synopsis on the Life of Timothy?

How would you search for all information on Paul in the book of Philippians AND in his work at Philippi in Acts 16?

Anytime I do a search, I either get way TOO many results or not enough results.

Then, after searching for hours, I will stumble upon something and ask myself "Now why didn't that come up before when this is exactly what I asked for?"

Please help!

Hi Cynthia, have you tried taking a look at Mark Barnes' video about searching at http://www.logos4training.com/videos/searching/ ? It is 35 minutes long and very thorough. Here is his description: "This video covers the most commonly used search features in Basic and
Bible searches. We look at the different search views, at topics and
reading lists, and phrase-searching and wildcards. We show how to limit
the search to part of your library, or to a part of the Bible. The
search operators AND, OR, ANDNOT and NEAR are introduced, and we look at
how to search in Greek or Hebrew."

How would you search for a chart or synopsis on the Life of Timothy?

Welcome to the forums Cynthia!

Sometimes a search gets you what you want. Sometimes knowing the right resource to look into, gets you just as much.

For this particular kind of information, I'd look in a Bible Dictionary or Bible Encyclopedia first. From a passage with Timothy's name in it, right click, select "Person Timothy" from the right side of the pane that opens, and then from the left side select "Biblical People." This provides information and access to other information on Timothy (even a link to a wikipedia article - though this article has nothing to offer). What you see there will vary, depending on the base package you have.

How would you search for all information on Paul in the book of Philippians AND in his work at Philippi in Acts 16?

Again, you could open a "Person" study as you did for Timothy above, though the results wouldn't be narrowed to Philippi. You could also open Philippians, click on Philippi (in v.1) and select "Place Philippi." When that study opens, you'll see a list of places in Scripture where Philippi is mentioned (Acts 16:12, 20:6, Phil 1:1, 1Thes 2:2), as well as access to your Bible Dictionaries/Encylcopedias and several maps.

Another way to look for information on Paul more specific to the church at Philippi, is to open a commentary on Philippians and read the introduction. A thorough commentary will discuss Paul's relationship to the Philippian church, his history with them, etc. Since I don't know which base package you have, or additional resources you've purchased I wouldn't know which commentary to point you to as a good example.

To do more, using the search function you might try Paul NEAR Philippi (note the capitalization of the search parameter NEAR). But to do that more efficiently, you might want to create a collection to narrow down the resources you're searching. For example, you could make a collection of Journals, and search only those. You could make other collections to focus your searches as well.

There may be other strategies mentioned in response here, listen to all of them and try them all out. Then do what gets you the best results in a way that you can remember for next time.

Welcome to the forums! You might want to check out the DVD's from Camp Logos. If you were going to attend this might be a good alternative.

Also check out John Fallahee's videos at www.learnlogos.com the price is pretty reasonable.
