whooops! . . . it's gone

I love being able to read resources offline on my wife's ipod touch--we don't have internet at home and some places I go don't have it. Today, I was at such a place: a famous oil changing place that makes me think of a peanut butter brand . . .

Here's the problem: while checking out my offline resources, I selected the blue arrow button to read more information on one. when done, I accidentally touched the "available online/offline" button, turning this particular resource into an online resource only. within a split second, I re-selected "available offline". To no avail. the resource was "not available."

Two observations/thoughts:

Though this is the first time that has happened, I thought having the on/off switch located in a position where my thumb would be while holding the device, or where one might touch to absentmindedly "swipe" to turn a page perhaps not the best place for the button. In this case, i lost my resource I had hoped to read "in a jiffy" (ahem!). Could it be placed in a different location? top? centered?
i was surprised that the resource was "lost" that quickly. I know nothing about iOS, so, I don't know if there is anything Logos can do about that. Ie, does a resource necessarily have to be unavailable like that, or is it something Logos can tweak within their own app? it didn't seem like long enough time for a resource to be deleted, and it had already been downloaded. just switching on and off that button lost the resource. strange.

Has this ever happened to anyone else?

Given the name sake of the establishment, did you really have time to read? Ya, Logos doesn't give you a second chance with something like, "are you sure you want to delete this?" Some would probably prefer not having to click twice to delete something. I agree it is like a sand castle, time consuming to build and easy to lose. Perhaps Logos could tweek this a little.

now that's another story. man, that WAS quick! No, i didn't have time at all in the end. I think it took a total of 15 minutes, and that was with talking to decide and then talking about the bill afterwards. jeeeeepers!

I guess I thought things weren't really deleted until the sync, or something. And I am used to PC deletes going to the waste basket first . .. I guess apple and flash memory make the thing a heckuva lot quicker?

On my iPad after yoiu flipthe online/offline switch, you then need to push the Done button. If I've accidentally moved the switch to onlineonly,I then hastily put it back to offline before pressing the Done button. Don't know if iPod touch is different?

I was wondering if you were using the Beta app (if indeed there is such a thing)? I have just checked on my iPad and the UI is substantially the same as the iPod version (i.e. the one on/offline switch with no opportunity to confirm).

I agree that it is easy to accidentally take a resource offline and would suggest that Logos consider adding an additional step to confirm (imagine if you were on holiday in some remote wi-fi-less destination and accidentally deleted a book you had been planning to read [:(]).

Incidentally, I like the UI for building and editing playlists on the fly through the music app (on the iPod). Swipe to bring up the option to delete. It is two steps, but slickly handled.

yes, my experience was that the behavior is different than you describe, Nicky. I did not select "done." I merely swiped the on/off button back and forth.

One of the reasons that I moved away from windows was the constant asking 'Did you really mean to do that?' it drove me nuts.

In order to test that the iPad works the way you describe I turned off one my offline resources - you are right it went straight away. I turned it back on and it downloaded within a few seconds. That is the way it is designed to work. Nothing is lost (permanently) and although you might not be able to get it back instantly you are only a Starbucks (or other hotspot) away from retrieving it.

Of course this is predicated on having WiFi or 3G available and on tap. One of the reasons I have the router passwords of all the local watering holes and never book into a hotel unless it has 'Free' WiFi available.

I don't have an iPod but I am more than happy with this aspect of the iPad operation.

I am just playing around with my iPod at the moment and have noticed the music management app enables you to edit playlists (for example). There are three steps, edit, then select to delete and then confirm delete. As a new convert to the world of Mac (as of last week), I share your frustration with Windows overly suspicious UI. However, my problem is not that of indecision, but of my unusually (my wife would say freakishly) fat fingers [:S].

Not that I am suggesting, Dan, that you share my affliction [:#]. (To be clear.)

However, I do find the positioning of the on/offline switch particularly susceptible to my natural clumsiness.

I wonder if a similar approach to the music management app might be more elegant and less prone to error? If feels, to me at least, more natural to select items for download from the library menu. Perhaps this could mirror the playlist design in the music app?

The iPad is less problematic that the iPod because there is more screen and it is easier to hold.

The resource is removed as soon as the switch is flipped, not when the Done button is pressed. Version 2.0 of the app uses a button with a confirmation instead of a switch.

I notice that in my recent history I just have the switch, whereas in my library I also have the done button. I've just tried flipping the switch offline with a book I'd read, and, as Dave said, it was removed. Usually I make that mistake online, and it then downloads again instantly. It would be nice to have an "Are you sure?" to prevent us making that mistake accidentally offline. I'm waiting longingly to get back online to download lots of new vyrso books - they seem to be continuing the generous and frequent freebies.
