NIV84 going away

Over at the Accordance blog, they've announced that Biblica won't allow Zondervan to sell NIV84 and TNIV products anymore, and thus Zondervan has asked "all of our Mobile App and Software Distributors and Licensees who have
been selling these two text products to discontinue doing so." Accordance's cut-off date is January 16th!

This sounds like Logos would be included as well, though we haven't yet heard from Logos on this.

So, heads up. It looks like it's coming. I'm hope this doesn't affect the completion of the NIV84 REVINT, which I'm sure some folks will be concerned about.

Buy it now if you want it.

Logos hasn't been selling NIV84 or TNIV for some time already (since NIV 2011 came out). But you're right, I hope this doesn't affect their work on the REVINT for NIV84. Maybe they're going to finish it and then proceed to making the necessary changes for the NIV 2011 REVINT but only sell the latter? That would be unfortunate for those who have preferred to stick with NIV84. Those us of who prefer TNIV are out of luck either way, as they've said before they do not ever plan to do a REVINT for that. [:(]

Ah, yes, I see I was wrong. It's only TNIV that was discontinued. Glad I got it while I could. I know some very fine gentleman who worked on that.

My naturally curious nature would like to know why. If I sell old and new models of bicycles, for example, and stop selling the old model while they are still selling, won't people go across the street to my competitor and buy their old model. I suppose Biblica has a simple, straight forward reason.

I'm sure it's to reduce "confusion" in the marketplace (since they named the new NIV the same as the old NIV) and to make people switch to the new version.

What I'd like to know is why they didn't change the name of the NIV (2011) to something different, especially when it's really a revision of the TNIV. (I'm guessing I probably wouldn't like the answer to that one.)

Your analogy doesn't work. There is no competitor that can sell the old model of NIV

That's true. I guess I meant a different translation that followed closer to their 1984 translation model. Some will forsake the NIV altogether and go to something like the ESV which could be compared in some ways to the NIV84 although there are many differences.

In my opinion, this was a debacle. Zondervan is trying to trick its costumers into buying the failed TNIV by revising it slightly and calling it the same name as the NIV84. Shameful.

I, for one, am not about to switch. And if I do switch, it will be to something like the ESV, not a different version of the NIV.

To me this update of the NIV ranks right up there with "new Coke" as one of the dumbest marketing mistakes in history. Zondervan and whoever publishes the NIV84 had the most universally approved modern translation available, and they have been determined to destroy it. If I owned stock in the publisher's company, I would be furious.

Remember what Mark Twain said "A lot of people complain about the weather, but no one ever does anything about it." Well, maybe not the most motivational quote... But the point is, Zondervan is a company that has customers. If it wants to stay in business it will have some way of dealing with its customers. Writing them is one way of giving feedback.

I have already done this on this issue and may do so again. I believe there is a form to send feedback to them on their website. A yes, just found it again here.

Already have. The ESV is much superior, IMO. I've 'grown up' on the NIV, having had a copy since '84. But I've made the switch and won't be going back.

I would like to keep the NIV84 on L4 however, for study purposes (and most of the scripture memorization I've done in my life is NIV). I hope it remains available for us on L4.

The NIV1984 was pulled for the same reason Libronix will eventually go away, too many people recognize how good the old one was. fwiw: I do like Logos 4 better than Libronix. It took over a year to sway me.

I don't care to get involved in this debate, but I would like to point out that every major translation undergoes regular updating. The ESV just underwent a significant update just this year. The ESV that you have installed in Logos reflects those changes automatically.

The suggestion that a translation committee "repeatedly fails to get it right" is a misunderstanding of translation work. Language changes, and so must translations. Wether or not you are a fan of the specific changes in the NIV11, you should not denigrate the hard work of translation committees.

So what if there have been various revision the KJV, including some 200 revisions of the original translators work in the 1629 and 1638 Cambridge KJV editions, or Blayney's 1769 KJV text differed from the 1611 text in around 24,000 places? I have been a math and science teacher and this is wrong. I only wish I could get money like that.....

as if Algebra has changed in the last 18 months

for a new edition....that would be a bit fast...... public schools get new texts every 6 years or so. compared to public schools the buying power of a university is "tiny". the pedagogy of algebra has changed so new books would be needed especially in algebra...I was taught trial and error factoring....now its much more methodical.

The NIV84 RI was included in earlier Logos 4 base packages - this is no longer the case.

At the moment it only supports the New Testament, the last we heard Logos were continuing to work on the Old Testament.
