Latest iPad update is very nice but...

With the latest iPad ap update I now am willing to use the iPad for bible study. However, I feel like its still only 90% there. For instance the need for highlighting to synch across platforms is still there. Is this something that is just not possible or will be available eventually with further updates needed?
Thanks for the hard work!

If you're using Logos 4.5 highlighting should sync between your desktop and your iPad.

I am seeing the highlights from the desktop in the iPad and iPhone apps. But I am not seeing highlights made on the iPad on the desktop. In fact, I am getting a sync error now.

As Mark said, this should be working for you. If you are up to date on your desktop app, let us know and we can try and trouble shoot with you.

On your iOS devices or on your desktop app? Did you verify that the document file you saved your highlighting to on your mobile device is the same one used on your desktop, or at least that the note file is enabled for that resource?

Highlighting has so far been very slow for me. I haven't checked yet to see if it is syncing, but just adding a highlight has a bit of a delay.
I would also like to see a simplified highlighting approach. I would bet that most people, myself included, will be using the same highlighting style most of the time so I'd prefer not to have the styles dialog box pop up every time I make a highlight.

Slava,
I was not on 4.5 beta2, so I will test now and report back if the problem still exists.

I guess this would be possible, however, you must remember that highlighting must be directed to a location. It's not simple highlighting like Kindle or iBooks.

I no longer get the sync error icon. But now new highlights do not sync at all - in either direction.

Credit to Logos for taking this much needed step. However, using highlighting on an iPad first generation is proving to be very sloooooooooooooooowwwwwwwww right now. There's a several second delay when applying new highlights or deleting existing ones.

True, but there again I daresay many will be like me, not really caring what that location is - so I've got mine set to what I guess is a default file, Highlight Pens. There does need to be a way to change these, if desired, but it seems a needless extra step to be prompted every time when every time I'll just use the same settings.
As for sluggishness, it just took 22 seconds from the time I told it to highlight a section to the time the highlight showed up. This is on an iPad 1, and so far each of my highlights have had the same lag. Anyone else seeing this?
Also, I'm not yet seeing my highlights on the desktop, though it's only been a few minutes since I made my first highlight.

It normally takes mine between 10-15 seconds. I have an original iPad and an iPhone 4s. I think that it syncs before it shows, which may explain the delay.

I too appreciate the iPad update. However, my Library still displays items that I have "hidden" on my desktop (specifically, some of the Perseus resources in Latin). Is this a problem for anyone else? Any solutions?

What I am finding is that the notes I make on my ipad 1
are sent to my pc but not my mac or my iPhone 3gs. and all are running the latest drops or betas. Notes that I make on my mac are
not shared anywhere. Based on the fact that it was working until the role out
of version 2... I suspect that it is still a server issue in that it is being
overwhelmed by everyone moving to the new app and it wanting to sync everything
all at once. Just my opinion, but the coming hours should tell us a
lot. As for time to sync... just a few seconds is all it takes... it is still internet dependent.

If this remains to be the case, it will make the highlighting function unusable for me. You could not read a piece of text of any decent length - with any kind of a flow - if you need to stop for so long at each place you want to make a highlight to refer back to later.
I'm very pleased Logos took this step as I love reading Logos resources on my iPad and hope this is down to initial teething problems.

My mistake! It works now! It must not have synced correctly earlier, I did notice later that I was having some sync issues that have seemed to have been resolved.
Ok, I seem to have misread a temporary hicup for a missing feature. I guess the ap is at what I would consider 100% now. I am very excited about this! Thanks, Logos!
And thanks to all who were willing to try and help!

Paul, I have to wonder did you read what you posted here? I am not trying to be smart, but unless I have missed something, we are still working with cellular technology... even text messages take a minimum of a few seconds, to at times, even a few days to be delivered. once I have synced the note it is instantaneous, but the initial note takes a few seconds. What am I missing? What do you expect? Is this a logos short coming or a technology issue? Please shed some light on this for me. I just can't see how this could be "deal breaker" or make the app unusable... even a radio station when you are broadcasting live with no delay, will have a couple of second delay right under the tower.

But that's not what he's talking about. He's talking about the delay in simply applying a highlight. If I highlight a section of text in iBooks or the Kindle app, it shows up right away. If I highlight text in Logos, it doesn't even show up for me for 20ish seconds. I'm not going to be inclined to highlight very often if every time I highlight I have to wait 20 seconds before moving on.
Sync is a separate issue. So far, I've not seen my notes and highlights sync. No problem - I assume it's launch-day problems. When Apple launched MobileMe, I lost email for several days. I can stand a brief hiccup period with Logos. But one of my concerns is that Logos' hiccups tend to last for more than a few days. I'm sure they will get sync issues worked out, but it is a little concerning that Sync 2 was supposed to solve issues, yet several are reporting problems. I'm also sure they will get highlighting speed improved, but I remember how long it took to do that for the Mac app, and it's still more sluggish than I'd like.
Others have made it work (and with sync at that - Kindle & iBooks) and I know Logos will get it to work as well. I just hope the fix shows up soon rather than "soon".

Chris, in all of the highlighting that I have done over the past few weeks and even today, it takes me at most 1 or 2 seconds to see it.. never more... and this is not an internet issue since if I understand you correctly, it is taking you several seconds to see it on the creating device... I don't know what the problem could be, I am working on an iPad 1 and an iPhone 3gs... both old technology, and the highlights show in less than 2 seconds from the time I click "Done."

Nonetheless, unless you think me lying, your experience does not change my experience, an experience reported by others in this thread. Something is causing our highlights to have a delay before appearing after applying them. I'm hopeful this issue will be worked out quickly, and your experience of no delay gives me reason to think the problem can be fixed without an app update. But as it stands, I'm seeing about 20 seconds between applying a highlight and actually seeing it.

My highlights are syncing both directions.

Those of you who are having success syncing between the iPad and the desktop app, are any of you using a Mac? Is it syncing fine with the Mac or only with the PC? Still no syncing for me on my Mac. Highlights showed up on my iPad from highlights originally set, but I've not yet seen new highlights syncing from the desktop to the iPad or from the iPad to the desktop.

Chris, I never thought, said, nor even indicated that you were lying. I only gave my experience. I believe that you are having issues, but the point is, that they are not app wide, and that overall, not many are having this issue, so yes, it should be fixable... to say that it would not require an app update... that would seem to be conjecture, but certainly fixable. One of the issues that seem to come from a common forum here, is that we have people working from iPad 1 & 2, iTouch 2, 3, & 4, iPhone 2, 3g, 3Gs, 4, 4s, Mac leopard, snow leopard, Lion, and PC windows xp, Vista, windows 7 and maybe even some windows 8 beta versions, and then there is even home, professional and a couple of others... but for the most part when we indicate that we are having a problem, we leave off what we are having a problem with... these problems could be stemming from windows 8 home beta, with an Ipad 2 that is running something other than the latest ios... in other words, there are a lot of variables that we may need to include to find the common denominator... it is not the fix that is so hard, but what needs to be fixed that could take the time.

Chris, I am seeing nothing come to or from my Mac... only from the PC. From what i can see the PC side is fine, but the Mac side is broken.

This has not been my experience, either in testing on my 1 gen iPad, or with today's release on my iPhone. It takes at least 10-15 seconds (sometimes slightly longer). To me it was not a deal breaker... but I can see how others might think so.

Additional observations:
- I'm seeing the same behavior on my iPhone 4S as on my iPad 1
- Highlights are taking 10-20 seconds before they are visible on screen
- Highlights and notes made on the iPad or iPhone have not yet shown up on the other device or on the desktop
- Highlights made on the desktop Mac version eventually show up on both the iPad and iPhone.
- Initially had 4.5 sr 1 installed on the Mac, now have 4.5a b2 installed.

Hi Chris,
I am using a Mac and my experience matches that described by Rev. Todd. There is just a minimal delay before the highlighting displays on the iOS device and it is syncing with my MBA. The syncing is working both ways.
The only delay and lag I am seeing is when I start up the app to a resource with highlighting visible on the page (a delay of some 60 seconds or more until the resource displays and then another 30 seconds before it responds). I am working on an iPad 1 and iPhone 4 and the resources in question are downloaded onto the device.
In so writing, I don't intend to challenge or dismiss your experience. I just want to reassure that, in my case at least, the app appears to be working well, Mac and all. Please let me know if there is any further information I can provide which might help you troubleshoot the issues on your end.
I have encountered a bug pertaining to the formatting, but this is not related to the issue in hand and I have reported it elsewhere.
God bless,
Andy

Rev. Kelly, in order to test the new highlighting feature on the iOS app I opened up my favourite Bible on my iPad to a clean page, selected a random chunk of text to highlight and then had to wait circa 15 seconds for that highlight to appear on my iPad screen. My iPad was connected to my super-fast fibre optic broadband at the time. The delay was unacceptably long.
I'm not talking about waiting for a highlight on my Mac to appear on my iPad or vice-versa. Simply that a highlight made on my iPad as I am reading should appear on my iPad a lot quicker than it did.
That said, I have since performed this same test with another resource on my iPad (a short monograph) and it performed better.
Lastly, I did find the tone of your post to me quite abrasive to say the least.

Andy,
How do you have your note/highlighting files set up? Where are your highlights being sent?

Do you have a lot of highlighting in your Bible? Perhaps it slows down the more highlighting you have.

I created a new Notes file from the iPad to use for highlighting and that has just sync'd to the desktop. Highlights in this file sync pretty quick, though applying the highlight is still very sluggish. I tried putting the iPad in airplane mode and still had the same delay applying highlights. Glad to get a clue on the sync issue though - it appears there is a problem syncing via some of my notes files.
One thing that seems peculiar, though, is when I highlight and select a particular document to use for highlighting, it is not remembering my document choice. I have to change to the new document every time I highlight.

Hi Chris,
I have just now run a test.
With reference specifically to my experience on the iPad1.
I am highlighting in the Driscoll book, Doctrine (300 pages long or so).
I am sending notes and highlights across three note files, two arranged topically (around key themes) and one specific to the book (Doctrine). In some cases I have two notes applied to the same passage (so that I can send the note into the topic and book specific note file). I am generally using the yellow highlighter pen (with a couple of exceptions). I am also adding note text.
I do have some custom palettes, but have not yet used them from the mobile.
I have killed all other background apps (using the shortcut menu).
I am taking care to make sure that Logos is only open on one device at a time (i.e. I have shut down L4 on the MBA). However, after highlighting I then went immediately to the MBA and started up L4. The highlights displayed immediately on the MBA.
The mobile app is responsive and performance has been consistently good throughout the day (save the slow start up which was marginally better this time).
Please let me know if you need any further information and wish me to try anything specific for comparison.
Andy
[Edit: all the note files used in this test are very small]

Bob has just posted on another thread, here,
Bob Pritchett said:...some of the others are looking into the problem, which appears to be related to very large note files syncing...
It seems that it may be relevant that I am working with small note files. Perhaps this explains why the app seems more responsive at my end.I would be interested to know whether Rev. Todd is similarly working with small note files?

Not at all. I've only really highlighted a few parts of Colossians due to being a relatively new user. I don't have many notes either.
I just tried the test again in my ESV Bible on my iPad and it does seem to be highlighting quicker now than it did earlier.

All my notes files are small. I very rarely use notes and only sometimes use highlighting.
0 -
Mark, can someone provide me with an answer as to what is the maximum number of resources we should download, and still be able to run smoothly?
0 -
I took the rather drastic step of deleting all my notes files in Logos. None of them were large, and I had perhaps a dozen different files, but I removed them all. Removed the app from iPhone and iPad and reloaded them. Made a highlight on the desktop and after a few minutes it showed up on the iPhone. Made a highlight on the iPhone and it applied with very little delay and soon showed up on the desktop. Repeated the test on the iPad with the same results: highlights appear within a second or two and sync quickly to the desktop. Sync from device to device is a little slower (probably because I can't manually tell it to sync).
Whatever the problem is, removing all my notes files straightened it out. Not really recommended for most users.

I am glad that you got it Chris, but it kind of sounds as though the issue may at least for you, have been centered around the note style or format rather than the size of the files them selves... would you agree?

I'm really not sure. I've done nothing strange with notes or highlighting and typically use only the default yellow highlighter.
