Logos 4 Crashing

This is a bug report.

I am attempting to export a portion of a book to Word so that I can read it on my Kindle.

I load "10 Popular Prophecy Myths Exposed: The Last Days Might Not Be as near as You Think" DeMar, G. (2010) and then hit Ctr-P to bring up the Print/Export dialog box.

When I attempt to select everything in the first three chapters, L4 crashes. I have attempted this several times with the same effect.

I am assuming that this is a problem with the book that needs to be fixed by Logos.

Description

I am attempting to export a portion of a book to Word so that I can read it on my Kindle.

Steps to reproduce

Load logos 4
Search - "myth"
Click on "10 Popular Prophecy Myths Exposed: The Last Days Might Not Be as
near as You Think"
Hit Ctrl-P to bring up Print/Export dialog box
Select title page, Chapter 1 (select all), chapter 2 (select all)

Actual Result

Logos 4 crashed

Expected Result

Instead of crashing I expected Logos 4 to select the text as indicated

Did you post your log here before or after you restarted Logos4?

I ask because the log file only covers about 1 1/2 minute of activity; there is no crash in the log; the last activities seem to refer to Logos4 startup routines (not copy/paste activity).

EDIT: Please repeat the steps that caused the crash and post the log here before restarting Logos.

Ah... that's what I did. Although, I am assuming that I don't need to close it when Windows 7 does that for me after L4 crashes.

Tried it again this morning and appear to have got the same thing. L4 crashed but what I was doing before the crash does not appear on the log.

Taxee, Another method you might use is to click and drag to highlight the portion you want to copy into Word, the use the Windows CTRL-C and CTRL-V to copy the text from Logos and paste it into Word. I've successfully used this method for very large chunks of text that I've converted to a .PDF for an eReader (of course, that's no longer necessarey with Vryso in my case). [Y]

I like to read on a Kindle. My iPad would be wonderful to use if it didn't hurt my eyes when reading for extended periods.

Vyrso doesn't allow one to read natively on a Kindle to the best of my knowledge (although i would happily be corrected).

I should add that I have a 1st gen Kindle and, as I am in Canada, cannot access the internet via my Kindle (Whispernet doesn't work here).

So i am not sure how Vyrso would help.

Here is another log. Tried the procedure with another book "Biblical Logic". You can see the book being accessed in the log.

In this case, after I brought up the Export/Print dialog box (Ctrl-P), I selected chapter 10 and everything was fine. When i selected the next section of the book (chapter 11), L4 crashed.

This is really getting frustrating as it appears to be an L4 problem and not a problem with a specific book.

I understand completely. However, none of that invalidates the CTRL-C/V method of copying/pasting your Logos book text into Word, eh? Its a valid work around the Logos crashing problem you're experiencing now.

Absolutely... My guess is that L4 is crashing so quickly there is no recording of the crash in the log file.

I came to that realization after I found I could make the program crash on command.

I talked to tech support and they also crashed when they went through the same steps that I did.

Edit: I should add that the initial response from tech support was not particularly helpful. Why do tech support people always start out with the presumption that you are a moron? They were trying to get me to do a workaround for the problem (which would have taken significantly longer than what the program is advertised to do. Maybe it's their experience (?). Seriously, a lot of the calls to tech support are because people don't understand how to do the most basic tasks. They have to rule out PICNIC (Problem In Chair, Not In Computer) first. But that's not to justify how they made you feel.

This is the wrong strategy for tech support. As I read your description, this is likely what was going on: they wanted to help you do what you wanted, but the bigger issue is that the program is broken. Most often the issue is not the program, but the user trying to do what the program is not designed to do. Their priorities were inverted because of their experience with other users, but they immediately recognized the higher priority when you pointed out the elephant in the room.

Tech support folks aren't the only ones who do this sort of thing. And while I'm not defending how you were treated, I certainly understand what happened.

My guess is that there is some discussion going on about how this call was handled.

I didn't want to give the impression that I was treated badly but by the time I call tech support, I have already gone through the entire drill that they start with.

I guess that they do get a lot of people that are techno-morons and so have to start out slow... I just don't do slow real well.

You are correct. I can and have used the work around. It just takes more time. [:(]

I actually thought that maybe you were able to use Vyrso in a more effective manner than I have.

I have tried using Vyrso and Biblia.com on my wife's new kindle but I can only describe it as second best. It's just not the same as using a book that resides on the Kindle (bookmarks don't work well, etc.). And it just does not work on my first gen Kindle when in Canada.

Unfortunately, I can't reproduce it consistently; I've only crashed once or twice (not several times in a row).

Some more information about your configuration might help us narrow this down. In the resource, do you have the "Show page numbers" visual filter turned on? Do you have any notes/highlighting, visual filters, or search results displaying in the resource? On the Panel menu, is "Show footnotes on page" checked? In the Print/Export dialog, is Columns set to "Auto" or "Single"?

As I indicated, my only reason to access this book thus far was to put it on my kindle, as it was a relatively new addition to my library. So all of my basic settings for the book were the default values.

I have tried this a few more times myself with the "Myths, Lies, and Half-Truths" book and actually got past Chapter 2 at one point in the Export/Print dialog box. But when I right-click and "select all" on Chapter 3, it then crashed.

This issue should be resolved in 4.5b. Please let us know if you continue to experience this issue once 4.5b has shipped to the stable channel.

I had a similar problem, and it was because the printer I had chosen was not connected to my computer. This seems odd, since I too only wanted to export for the purposes of creating a pdf file. If you hit ctrl-p and the printer is not connected, things will crash. At my study, I have a USB plug in printer; at home I have a wireless network printer. Just to save frustration, I made my default printer "Send to OneNote."

The odd thing is, when I'm in range of my home wireless printer, it automatically chooses it. If I'm in a coffee shop, "Send to Onenote" is the printer. I haven't had any more crashes.
