iPad Logos Highlighting/Notes Bug?

Love the highlighting/notes upgrade to the iPad edition of Logos. Thanks very much for such a great Bible program!

I've made some pretty consistent use of the highlighting/notes feature in Logos for iPad. Unfortunately, about half of my notes don't show after I make them. There is nothing I can do to get them to show up. Repeated attempts at recreating the note or putting it in a different part of the verse I am working on doesn't solve the issue either. Is this a known problem?

Also, I have tried the copy and paste feature in notes by copying a quote from a commentary and placing it into a note. What I paste shows up in a different font than anything I may have written before the quote. I don't suppose font support will eventually find its way into the notes function will it?

For clarification - are these notes that don't show up notes you have created on the iPad or notes created on the desktop which you expect to sync to the iPad?

I don't see this behaviour - can you post a screen shot showing this and details of what you are copying, etc?

I have not heard of this problem before. What resources are you using? Have you checked in the note file in L4 to see if the note appears there?

Is it in the typeface of the resource itself? If I remember, I will try this out when I have my iPad next.

Hi Graham,

These are notes that I have created on my iPad for use on my iPad.

Here is a screenshot of two quotes I used from two sources...Lenski (Interpretation of the Gospel of Mark) and Marshall (NIGTC). I typed the paraphrase from Lenski myself and the quote from Marshall I copied and pasted...

Hey alabama,

I am using the NASB 1995 Update as my primary translation. I use various commentaries. The examples I gave Graham are from Lenski and NIGTC.

Before I wrote this post I thought to check L4. I see the same thing in L4 as I do in my iPad. I was even able to correct a typo I made on my iPad using L4 and it synced just fine.

Interestingly, I did notice that some extra emphasis markups showed up in a particular text. The extra arrows are in L4 as well. The following is an iPad screen shot of the extra arrows. In verse 13 I should only have one arrow, not three. Attempts at deleting the arrows has proven fruitless.

In this screenshot, the note that is intended for verse 1 kept attaching itself to the heading. Repeated attempts to get it out of the heading and next to verse one didn't convince it to move where it's supposed to be. All other attempts at notes in this screenshot worked fine.

In this screenshot, all I can do is show you where a note is supposed to be but isn't. I tried a combination of things to get a note to show but nothing worked.... I put the note in the heading section. I kept the note out of the heading section. I listed the note under "selection." I chose the "verse" option. When finished, I tapped "done." When I finished I tapped outside the notes window. I even tried to creat a note by selecting the entire verse and then pressing the "note" option. By highlighting the verse number and selecting "note." And even by choosing words at the beginning of the verse to highlight and then selecting note. No combinations worked. Confusingly, the note in the middle of verse 15 belongs there...it's not the note I was trying to make at the beginning of the verse. I tend to stay with a paragraph in my preaching and teaching...especially as I go through books. On average, I'd say about 1/3 of my attempts at notes don't work.

It is annoying, but this is how it works in Logos, both in L4 & mobile app. Whenever you have a heading, a note attached to a verse will appear in any heading attached to that verse.

Looking at this screenshot this morning, I'm thinking that I'm not looking at two different font styles, just two different sizes of the same font. That led me to tinker with the font view option on Logos for iPad. I learned that changing the view in one resource changed it in all resources. I tried creating notes in different views...both extremely large and really small. I learned that the font size in notes does not change with the view size of the resources. I also noticed that what is seen in the screenshot above didn't change either. Every note I made showed a difference in the size between what I typed and what I pasted into the NASB note from another resource like the NIGTC. I even tried it the other way and pasted from the NASB into the NIGTC. Same story.

What does this passage look like in L4? Are there three arrows? Are the arrows attached to the reference or a selection? If it is to the reference, have you checked with another translation to see what it looks like? [It seems to me that I have read about this somewhere else… That the symbol repeats over long passages… I don't know if that is what is going on here or not]

Yes, I see the same thing in L4. Unfortunately, I can't select anything in the verse that would tell me whether the arrows are attached to a reference or a selection. Generally, I attach such an emphasis markup to a reference and not a selection. All I'm doing with them is marking where I think a new thought in the text begins. I try to keep from highlighting large references because the software seems to struggle with it.

I just checked it out, and I concur. [:S] There is a way to determine this, however. If the note shows up in another translation, it is attached to the "reference". If it doesn't, it is attached to a "selection". Now that I think about it, your arrow is a "highlight" style, and I think that these are always attached to a selection.

Have you opened the note file in L4? (If you need help figuring that out, let me know.) The reason I am asking is because if there are multiple notes/highlights, you can delete them within the note file. Also, you had mentioned different sized typefaces. You can adjust those within the note file as well. Notice in the two screen shots below that I have changed both typeface & point size. The first screen shot has a serif typeface w/ three point sizes. The second screen shot is a sans-serif typeface with only one point size.

Thanks for the suggestion. I've not used notes in L4 much so it takes a while for me to get around them. I think I've got them figured out...at least a little. I found the highlight note and deleted it. Funny enough, it took away the emphasis markup I wanted and kept the two that I didn't. I find no way at all to get rid of them. There is no evidence of them in any of my notes.

So, I'm starting to see how this is becoming quite a problem for me. I'm still having problems getting notes to work 100% of the time. So, I thought I would brush up on how to make notes in L4...something I haven't spent much time with. In the screenshots below (the first from my iPad, the second from L4), I tried to make a note (as discussed earlier in this thread) on my iPad but it didn't work. So, I made the note on L4 and then tried to edit it on my iPad. The heading does not show up in L4 in my Bible text but does in the Solid Colors note file under Psalm 32:1 (see screenshot). Everything shows up in my iPad note. So, as a work around, I could create a note in L4 and edit it on my iPad if I find it necessary. But, when I edit it on my iPad, L4 forgets part of the note I originally made on it...at least in the Bible text. Weird.

By the way, the reason am I working so much on my iPad and not so much on L4 is because I have part time jobs that keep me away from my office most of the week...one of the blessings of ministry in rural areas. I have learned to rely heavily on my iPad for study during any downtimes I might get. It's so much more portable than my iMac. Up to this point I would simply copy and paste texts I'm looking at for the week into Pages and outline and write notes in Pages and then do other things I thought helpful to me with iAnnotate. Needles to say, the ability to use notes and highlight in the Logos app is very helpful to me. As with any new thing, it just takes time to figure out how its gonna work. One plus to the notes not working is that the number of times I retry each failed note has led to my memorizing those particular points...that's just not what the LOGOS devs. had in mind when they gave us the ability to write notes and highlight...at least I don't think it was! #thosedevilishdevelopers...

I'm having the same problem with not being able to take notes consistently.

I'm using iPad Logos version 2.0.2 on IOS 5.0.1 (9A405) on an iPad2. I have the ESV downloaded to the iPad. To reproduce my problem, go to 2 Cor 10:18. For testing purposes, I select "approved" and select Note...

oh!!! I just figured it out while I was typing this - the note saves properly on the iPad if I give it a note title and I give the note content in the content box below the title. Is that by design or is that an oversight? On L4, I can create a note with just a title without giving it content.

I have figured out that the reason the arrows show up is because Logos assumes that once you select a highlight style in a note every note you make from that point on should have that same highlight style. That's a little inconvenient in my opinion. I would much rather tell Logos where I want 'x' as opposed to having to tell it I don't want 'x' here.

You are right. I just tried this myself. I chose to make a note in 1 Samuel 6:16 by highlighting the verse number. I tried to make a note under the "reference" option and a note under the "selection" option. Any note I try to make in the title window without putting anything in the comments window does not show up on my iPad or in L4. That doesn't seem right to me. I have noticed that when you delete something in the title section the word "title optional" come up. It would seem that comments could also be optional. As a work around until I am told that this is the way it is or it is corrected, I'll just have to remember to put something in the comments section.

So, the only thing that is not resolved...at least by way of "work around" is the fact that quotes come in to notes at with a larger point size than what is originally typed in the note. I suppose that one workaround is to paste the quote first, then write a note. The problem then is that the font point is too high for the entire note...at least its all the same size though....
