I am wondering when is the best time to purchase a base package upgrade? Should I wait for a sale? Is there a better time to upgrade? I am not in a hurry to upgrade so I can wait if I can get a better deal.
Best time to upgrade is while you're enrolled in theological education. You get a great academic discount. Do you have any plans to do some grad school in theology or biblical studies?
As far as I can recall, upgrades to new base packages generally only go on sale every two or three years, when Logos rolls out a new major release. Last time was 4.0 in November 2009; the next one would be 5.0. No idea when that will come along. They're still working on the 4.5a, b, ... series. Might even to go 4.6 next. So it could be another year or more before 5.0 betas start showing up.
Should I wait for a sale?
Seems Logos has lots of sales in December.
Also may want to look at => Master Library Builder to compare with base package upgrading.
Combing Scholar's Gold and Master Library Builder (MLB) results in an extensive digital library. Note: depends on resource usability whether to consider upgrade to Scholar's Platinum or Portfolio. MLB includes many resources in Platinum and Portfolio (along with two partial collections included in Scholar's Gold for 24 volumes) so estimating Scholar's Gold plus MLB to be ~ 2,900 volumes (about $ 1.33 per volume at regular price). In contrast, Porfolio regular price per volume is $ 2.68 (plus regular price is $ 410 more than Scholar's Gold plus MLB).
Thread => Christmas 2010 Master Collection (2,010 vols.) A GREAT Bargain! includes a spreadsheet done by Praiser in 2010, which could be used to compare your Logos library with MLB.

Thanks Rosie. Unfortunately I do not have any plans for theological education. Actually I do not have any formal education in theology though I was one of the founders in a church planting project and during that time preached fairly regularly and served the Lord as the first elder. At another time I conducted a six-week evangelistic campaign and over the years have taught many bible lessons, preached sermons and facilitated seminars. All of my education has been self taught though a study of the sciptures and working with various pastors who I have had the priviledge of serving under. I always appreciate your advice and your wealth of knowlege. I guess when I am ready I will go ahead with an upgrade. I currently have the scholars base package.
Thanks Smiling for the info. Very much appreciated and I will keep it in mind.
I currently have the scholars base package.
Scholar's Gold includes my favorite commentary series => UBS New Testament Handbook Series and => UBS Old Testament Handbook Series so upgrading to Scholar's Gold is a better deal than individual purchase.
Before upgrading, suggest calling Logos sales => http://www.logos.com/about/contact
Other than the Christmas credit, I've found I was able to get both of my upgrades at the same price as Christmas if I called or emailed to sales rep.

Your memory fails you, I'm afraid. Upgrades were 20% off from before I bought in September 2010 until the end of the year. And they were 15% off + Christmas credit this December. There was also 15% off base packages during Pastor Appreciation Month in October, but I don't remember if that included upgrades.
Michael, if you don't need the books right now, I'd say wait for the next sale. Or call Sales and see if they can give you at least 15% off. I wouldn't have half the library I have if I kept buying for the full price like some people here do. I've payed about 75% of the list price for my base package, and I didn't even take the straightest path.
Thanks fgh for your advice. It sounds like good counsel.
I hope it is several years before Logos 5 is released.

Figures. I didn't pay much attention to those sales since I already had Portfolio. Thanks for setting the record straight.

I almost never pay full price on anything (very few things can't be discounted, even when there isn't a sale going on). I always go through my sales person and get nice deals... the more you buy, the better a deal you can get. I often get better deals even than the sale prices, so sales don't excite me much. Except when it's something like 2010 books for $1 each. Even though I already had a good number of them, I went for it anyway and still came out ahead.

Amen on the usefulness of the UBS series. I use it all the time in my classes both with native English speakers but especially those for whom English is a second language. it is extremely helpful! It gives alternate wording for phrases, Many time they point to the original language forms that justify the alternate readings.
