Why are there no pictures or illustrations in The New Manners & Cutoms of Bible Times?

I am in the process of cleaning up my library and trying to get rid of books that are duplicated on Logos and was shocked to discover that there are not any of the pictures in the software that are in the printed book? Why not????? After all, the purpose of this book is to teach the customs of the land and there is only so much that you can do with words!

Plus, this makes me hesitant about getting rid of my books, unless I painstakingly go through and check with one on Logos. This wastes so much valuable time.

It also makes me hesitant in buying books now from Logos, unless I know it is exactly like the printed version or if there are any major differences.

There should be some mention on the website where you sell the book, that it is not a duplicate of the print version, as well as stating that there are no pictures contained in what you purchase.

I am quite disappointed, to say the least. Sad

I would be disappointed too. My guess is that Logos did not have permission to use those photographs & illustrations. Was this a recent purchase? Was it part of a base package? I do not own it, but own three others which do have photos & illustrations. If it was recent (even if it was not) I would request a refund.

I understand your frustration, but there may be people who would want the resource even if they could not have the pictures.

Absolutely. Maybe you should check the "missing features" page. Oh, wait...that's just a commercial now.

Not that this excuses Logos, but if you have Nelson's New Illustrated Bible Manners & Customs and their Illustrated Bible Dictionary, they do have the pictures in Logos. Might give you what you need.

Oh, I have that....I presently live in Israel and sometimes am asked to teach on Biblical times or culture for the school that I attend....so I have many books on Biblical culture, in print, as well as in software...that is why I was trying to cull down my books in print, as I need the space in my library....so, like I said, it's just a disappointment..plus realizing that I now have to check each book in the software before I give the printed book away...I could use that time for other things.

In some cases Logos was not able to get the permission to reproduce the images and so had to leave them out. When a publisher licenses the images for a book, that license apparently has to be renegotiated for a e-book (at least in some cases). None of us knows if this is what caused the images to be left out of the book you are referring to.

What many have asked Logos to do is to list clearly on the product description page what is unlike the hard copy of the book in the Logos version. Fair's fair and that seems fair to most of us. At least we'll make informed purchases.

Yes, Mark. I realized that that may be the case. If I remember correctly, that was the case with "Ancient Near Eastern Texts Relating to the Old Testament." When we all saw that the ANET was coming available, many of us had assumed that it would include both volumes. But the 2nd volume with the pictures was not included due to that problem.

I guess what I was trying to emphasize through this email is for Logos to make it very clear if it is like the hard copy or not. Thus I would not have to take the time now to double check every hard copy against the software before I give the hard copy away. This is one of those instances where it would help to know that the Logos book that we have is not like the hard copy.

I've noticed other resources that lack illustrations (photos and such). I guess if Logos included them, the resource price would be higher?

How about if we get Google to use their Google Earth concept and create a historic Earth. Spin the globe backwards and you travel back in time. Click on parts of the 3D globe and view the artifacts for that time period. Zoom in on an artifact and click on available icons to see specific photos and read about items related to people, places, things, culture, manner, traditions, etc., of biblical times. Yea, I know, it's a crazy idea. Google Grandiose Globe?

Seriously, though, I think Logos should include exactly what comes with the tree version of the resource.

I agree with this 100%. It would take a lot of work for Logos to go back over their 14,000+ resources and tag differences. Certainly they should do this going forward even if it can't be done for earlier works.

I realize I'm now asking you for more work, which is the last thing you need, but it would be very helpful for the rest of us, if, when you've done those comparisons, you would use the review function on the product pages to list things that are missing.
