Stewart Custer

Hello, all,

Greetings in our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ!

I would like to ask the members here if they can give me an indication about the theological position of Stewart Custer whose upgrade volumes are now being advertised? I see where he taught and I am very familiar with his name, but I would like to know if his theological position is Calvinistic or Arminian? Because he taught at BJU, I don't imagine he would be a full Calvinist. Is that true?

Take a look at http://www.bju.edu/about-bju/creed.php If he did not hold to that, he would have been unemployed. Dr Bob I, II, or III were not known for allowing deviation from the norm.

I just went there. To my surprise (and I was very busy), there was no simple statement, but the Confession or Doctrinal Statement was broken up into recorded lectures and they don't tell you how long each is going to be. So much for modernity.

I was listening to the one on vicarious atonement, and then I added another page to my browser to check on the statement at the bottom of the page while listening and plugged in the bju site and yuck, doing so stopped the program I was listening to. So, I gave that up. But I heard and read enough and knowing something about the university from past readings, I see where they stand.

I love every word of Scripture and every book in the Bible. My favorite books are John, Romans, Galatians, Ephesians, Philippians, Colossians and Hebrews, then Revelation, to name just a few. Romans 8:1 has to be a favorite because it spoke to me decades ago.

The Jones family has eschewed theological systems for years (example: there is no exegetical system taught at the university either), so getting a prof to admit to a system like Calvinism or Arminianism is difficult, if not impossible, to do. I had several classes with Custer years ago and his positions are more toward the Calvinist end of the spectrum.

Well, I long ago (I mean many years ago) read some of the history of the University, that the founder was a Methodist, so was wondering. I have noticed that a number of people I have met through the years have Ph.Ds from Bob Jones and those people later became strong Calvinist Presbyterians. I hope you enjoyed your classes with Dr. Custer.

Jack, while I can appreciate what you're trying to say, I can say with certainty that at least Dr. Bob III and his son Stephen allow for a fair bit of flexibility among the faculty in the area the original poster above was inquiring. Within the basic fundamentals outlined in the university creed, there is a lot of leeway...and the faculty are indicative of that leeway.

Glad to hear that things are not so rigid these days. Most—if not all—the BJU alumni I have known come from the era when Bob II ran the university.
