I have a great laptop system for Logos (i7 processor, 16G ram, 64 G SSD, 500 G 7200 RPM SATA secondary, 1G video ram, WIndows 7)) with one drawback - Toshiba installs the operating system and other stuff on the ssd rather than the other hard drive (7200 500g SATA). I want to replace the 64 G SSD with a 120 or larger. A tech at Geek Squad told me that it was possible to replace the SSD (which is the C drive thank you Toshiba) and then to reinstall Windows and the other factory stuff from the recovery disks.

I ran out of memory on the SSD and switched Logos to the secondary drive - the resulting slowdown in Logos operation makes me sad.

Do any of you have any thoughts / suggestions about this process?

Budget of around $300. (for parts) I have seen Crucial 256 SSD on Amazon for 320. I don't know how easy an install that would be in my Toshiba. I would call Crucial first. 128 is $163 on Amazon. If the cost went to high i would start saving for a Mac desktop.

While the decision is yours I would weigh how much that perceived quickness vs sadness (slowness) affected my personal relationship with the Mighty One. Then there are all those distractions, family, blessings, giving, book buying. IMHO When we (spend to tweak) that is a 'seed being sown' vs stewardship of resources we manage.

Reinstalling Windows from the disks is one option, but another option would be to buy a hard drive/SSD replacement kit that allows you to hook the new SSD to a USB port, then clone your current SSD to it, then you just swap out the drive - you get the additional space of the new drive, but all your other data, settings, etc are intact. You want the OS on the SSD because the OS has to load and run every time you run the system. If it was on the slower 500GB you whole system would slow down, including Logos.

I just built a desktop system around a Patriot Wildfire SSD (240GB). It is a SATA III drive, so I had to make sure I had SATA III on the motherboard I purchased. Everything is super quick, with read/write transfer rates of 500/550 MB per second.

If your motherboard has SATA II, then get a SATA II SSD. You'll get transfer rates about half of what I get with my Patriot Wildfire, but that is significantly faster than a 7200 rpm HDD.

It really shouldn't be that difficult or expensive. Find the SSD that fits your liking (and your machine) and swap it out with a screwdriver. Just make sure you stay grounded properly and make sure you have a Windows install disk. The problem with most Windows OEM installations is that they don't provide you with a Windows install disk (those days passed by long ago). So, you're probably looking at buying a new copy of Windows along with your SSD. Also make sure you have installation discs/software for your other programs once you get Windows up and running. You'll probably be fine with drivers and what not - the internet is the most crucial one, and Windows comes with a plethora of those drivers pre-installed. Most any other can be downloaded for free with a bit of searching.

But, that's why I like my Mac. It came with a OSX installation disc and the parts are standardized so I don't have to worry about finding drivers and making things work. (That and I find OSX to be better in many respects to Windows)

One option is using => http://clonezilla.org/ to clone 64 G SSD to a larger SSD, which could be done by booting up Clonezilla, create an image for 64 G SSD on your 500 G drive. Shut down computer, swap SSD's, then boot up Clonezilla, then restore image to larger SSD.

Personally partitioned a hard drive to have a dedicated fast partition for Logos 4 use.

Also may want to consider a RAM disk for Temporary files to reduce some SSD wear and tear.

I have read the L4Mac forums that complain about the lack of parity with L4Windows and have concluded that MAC hardware is not the best choice for me, but I keep my peace rather than hijack the threads and try to convert to the PC way of work.

Do us all a favor and keep the Pro MAC comments within the MAC forum and keep the pro PC comments in the Windows forum. When I am looking for a solution for a PC problem I don't want to hear how spending an additional $1000 on hardware will solve it (I just priced out a 15" MBP with 8 GB Ram. i7, discrete graphics and SSD at $2699 US and I can get a similar Dell 15z for only $1620).

I am NOT anti Apple. I own an iPod touch and recently bought an iPad. They are great for what they do and are useful tools for ministry. I just tire of hearing that Apple products are the solution to every PC frustration.

Concur spinning beach ball (or pizza) is no fun on Mac. For Logos 4, Mac has inherited PC tendency for periodic reboot; have learned to monitor memory usage. By the way, have experienced a number of no fun issues on PC too. Overall, Mac OS X tends to be easier to use so Logos 4 Mac receives more complaints about not just working.

Concur Logos 4 on Mac lacks a number of features compared to Logos 4 on PC; wiki has => Feature Parity with notable Logos 4.5 list reduction of 18 items. Thankful for many Logos 4 improvements on Mac and PC, including Personal Books. Observation: Microsoft Word 2010 on PC can handle Hebrew and hyperlinks with logosres: URL, but Word 2011 on Mac cannot (however Word 2011 on Mac combines Word and Publisher for similar capabilities as Pages).

Caveat: Logos 4.5b Beta 4 is a bit buggy; have crashed and hung several times this week on Mac and PC since sync on startup and shutdown needs improvement on both platforms. Since Logos combined releases for Mac and PC in March 2011, have noticed substantial feature parity improvement.

Also aware Logos 4 on both platforms has performance improvement opportunities; hence Logos User Voice suggestion => Improve Logos 4 Menu Responsiveness

Concur MacBook Pro models have premium pricing; for more fun, compare 17" models, where can purchase two refurbished Dell 17" laptops for same price (or less) than one refurbished 17" MacBook Pro.

In contrast, refurbished MacBook Air models have the best ultrabook hardware pricing. Less expensive ultrabooks by other manufacturers have less hardware. By way of comparison, a 13" MacBook Air with 1.8 GHz i7, 4 GB RAM, and 256 GB SSD is $ 1,439 => Refurbished MacBook Air 1.8GHz dual-core Intel Core i7 (with slower 1.7 GHz i5 CPU, price drops to $ 1,349). The 13.3" MacBook Air has the same 1440 x 900 screen resolution as a 15" MacBook Pro (MBP).

Apple has a Boot Camp option (with hardware drivers for Windows) so can run Windows natively on a MacBook Air. Windows license not included (am aware of low cost licenses for education and non-profit organizations).

As far as I know this issue does not affect my relationship with Jesus at all... It does impact my sermon preparation as delays in typing speed in notes and delays in the note window cause me to use features less frequently and subsequently impacts the depth of my study. i bought the machine for Logos use, and want to make it as effective a study and sermon preparation tool as possible.

I am studying at Bible College and am about to purchase the Logos original languages software. I am also about to get a new PC and am seriously considering following in your footsteps with an SSD. Would you anticipate a big improvement with a 120 Gb SATA 3 SSD when I am getting an i7-3770 with 8 Gb RAM?

I also have 4 teenage children so anticipate light gaming, and some video editing (though our old PC hasn't allowed this!).

If you have time to give advice on specifying a PC that will last at least 5 years it would help,

An SSD will benefit any system compared with a HDD but 120 GB is too small e.g. I currently use 80 GB of a 180 GB SSD with no video files, so I recommend a 180 to 240 GB drive (also, they are faster than a 120 GB).

Hi Darren,

I don't want to mislead you that I've gone that route... I'm still plugging away on a Core 2 Duo... likely will for another couple of years before upgrading to something faster.

But I worked in corporate IT for 25 years before retiring to become a full time pastor, & I'm always scanning h/w trends.

Are you talking PC or laptop? I carried a laptop with Logos language tools into all my language classes. Concentrated on learning right-click, left-click rather than on memorizing the lexical form of all the words I might encounter. As a pastor, no regrets... has kept me in touch with languages far more than memory would have with paper books alone.

If a PC, it's so easily upgradeable you can do more later if you don't have $ now.

If a laptop, it's much more of a pain to upgrade, & the service life is generally 3 years vs. 5 for a pc (according to company stats--we puchased 20,000-30,000 pcs & laptops every year). So if you're talking laptop, I'd spend the extra & go 240 SSD vs. 120. Prior to this post, you'll see that some folks have already maxed out a 240Gb SSD.

And for only light gaming, I think you'll find the i5 entirely adequate for L4 & light gaming--and I'd go 240Gb SSD before I spent the i5 to i7 upgrade cost. The biggest bottleneck in the x86 architecture has always been disk speed, not cpu speed. Your pc/laptop could run much, much faster than others with the same chip simply by running a faster disk... That said, you'll want at least 1-2Tb of hard disk storage, too (more if you don't have network storage) for backups, & for archived video projects / files.

Finally, for L4, you'll also want a fast, dedicated graphics card with at least 1Gb of RAM on it. Others will chime in & correct anything I've missed. There are MANY tech-savvy folks in this forum.

With a PC (or a laptop) you could consider a 120 GB SSD with Windows and apps installed + get a large capacity 7200 rpm HDD to archive your video projects (this could be internal or an external eSATA/USB 3). Either way make sure the computer has a USB 3 port as USB 2 is much slower.

I have Platinum plus lots of other purchases, lots of Greek and Hebrew stuff, etc. (see below)

On my iPhone I have ~3900 books (that includes Perseus, which I rarely use, but it's free!).

Is it worth getting Pro?

Only if you want to encrypt your data with the bit locker or would likely use advanced networking features. Check out the differences.... Most folks don't use even networking beyond remote desktop---which is still included if hidden in the lower version. Rule of thumb here: if you don't know HOW & WHEN you'd use the feature, you probably don't need it.

I hope to get a laptop and desktop within the next few months, most likely PC - may wait till Windows 8 debuts: Do you recommend the OS and all of Logos be on a SSD? Or just one? ... <snip> ... If both the OS and all of Logos should go on the SSD, what size SSD should I get?

AFAIK, W8 is a rewrite for a touch UI. If you're thinking touch PC or touch laptop (think tablet), go for W8. Otherwise, W8 might not be worth the wait.

Go for the 180-240Gb SSD as Dave recommended above. I'd commend 240Gb or bigger. Use fast disk for large storage. And I'd put SSD on drive C for both machines.

Do you know if this is overkill for L4?

There is no such thing as overkill for Logos 4 - it is the most sluggish program i have, even with ssd and i7 processor, 1 Gig video card and 8 gig memory. With my larger ssd Logos is back to acceptable performance - I keep everything else i can on my other hard drive.

Thanks to all of you for advice and counsel - the overhaul worked and postponed my assault on my bank account for a Mac desktop. Hopefully my Toshiba will last till I retire.

Dave & others have posted on how to put L4 resources NOT on drive C.... not really supported & non-trivial, IMO.

Designating SSD as Drive C before building the PC will cause all your programs (including Logos) to default to SSD. Speed up all of them.

This is overkill and takes out 3 slots instead of 2 (usual for game cards with coolers) or just 1. You need something between a budget card and this that takes 2 slots max. as Logos4 does not have gaming requirements. 1 GB memory is fine. A company established in 2010 and with only a 2 yr warranty I would not consider it. Price in the SSD sector indicates quality and low price/low warranty = high risk! A 3 year warranty is standard and Intel offer 5 years on their top models.

EDIT: If you get your system from a local computer supplier/builder they can pre-install the OS onto the SSD, even if you supply it.

If installing the OS yourself just connect the new SSD and Windows installer will do the rest. Have Logos on the SSD, meaning you need 180-240 GB. Don't split Logos between HDD and SSD (having the resources on SSD and the resource index on HDD will rob you of the full benefits of SSD).

You don't have to wait for W8, most vendors will offer you W8 for a small additional fee NOW (check if you have to re-install from scratch).
