The Book of Philippians

Hi Everyone,

I'm taking a basic/intro hermeneutics class right now that's studying the book of Philippians. For one of my projects, I need to come up with 10 resources to suggest to myself or someone else who is studying Philippians. Does anyone have any recommendations for books from Logos?

Ten Commentaries - that's quite a bunch. You should then try to vary types of commentaries (technical, devotional, pastoral, new, "classic protestant", ancient church fathers). Let me suggest the two new technical ones:

D. A. Carson says in his New Testament Commentary Survey (I replaced his pricing quotes with Logos links):

The best commentary on the Greek text of Philippians is the magisterial work by Peter T. O'Brien (NIGTC; 1991, http://www.logos.com/product/3461/the-epistle-to-the-philippians-new-international-greek-testament-commentary ). O'Brien has read and thought through everything of importance up to his date, with the result that he gives reasons for his exegetical decisions. At the same time, this commentary is theologically rich, even if its prose is sometimes pedestrian. The treatment of the so-called “Christ hymn” (2:5-11) is superb. Virtually as good (though with slightly different strengths), and more accessible, is the NIC volume by Gordon D. Fee ( NICOT/NT Set only: http://www.logos.com/product/5185/the-new-international-commentary-on-the-old-and-new-testament ). Fee could not be boring if he tried. The zest of his prose makes him exciting to read, and his scholarship is always rigorous. Occasionally the dogmatism of his style, which makes him so enjoyable to read because his passion for the truth is contagious, makes him slightly irritating to read because he is casually dismissive of points of view not so easily written off.

Unfortunately I don't have them myself, but should I study Philippians, I'd take these for the technical side.

Take this list and add some criticism’s maybe even a couple of Lexicons and you should be good. Since hermeneutics deals with Interpretation, something along the lines of linguistics would help.

I am assuming you are a student so you qualify for academic prices and this books is $8.99 with the academic price.

You can also go to http://www.bestcommentaries.com and look for the top commentaries on Philippians.

Hermeneutics is challenging, but very fun. Have fun with it. Pay attention to the genres.

I would also recommend Steve Runge's High Definition Commentary on Philippians published by Logos. This one is not only great on content, but includes images/slides for sermon PowerPoint/Keynotes.

The New Beacon Bible Commentary by D. Flemming is good. It is available on Logos.

Wow, I'm surprised that G. Walter Hensen's volume on the PNTC series has not been recommended. I love this volume and is a first go to commentary. Another simple but good commentary is College Press NT commentary on Philippians. Both available in Logos: 1) PNTC 2) College Press NT Comm.

I would put Beale and Carson's Commentary of the New Testament Use of the Old Testament on this sort of list for any NT book.

Scholar's Gold includes my favorite commentary series => UBS New Testament Handbook Series and => UBS Old Testament Handbook Series that is prioritized in my Top 5 Bibles so can right click on a verse in a Bible, click reference, choose this commentary series (if available: New Testament is complete, Old Testament is missing some volumes => Suggestion: Update UBS Old Testament Handbook Series to include new volumes )
